Storing Digital Images Optional Accessories

What accessories are required to use my camera or camcorder?

Technically, the only equipment required for "on the go" digital photography is a digital camera or camcorder, memory cards, and batteries and a charger. However, at the bare minimum, you will be limited in what you can do with the images. The headings below cover the differences between the bare minimum and minimum recommended equipment, as well as the limitations.

Bare Minimum:

At the very least, in addition to your digital camera or camcorder, you will also need to have batteries (either extended-life alkalines or rechargeable batteries and a charger) and memory cards for storing your pictures. On our primary features page, we offer a comparison between the different types of batteries and information on the types of memory cards.

Using this equipment would allow you to capture images and store them; however, you would have the following limitations.

  • In order to view images, you would need to use either a television (if your camera or camcorder has a video output) or the the built-in viewscreen.
  • You would not be able to edit images.
  • The amount of images that you can save is limited to capacity of your memory cards.
  • In order to share images, you would need to give the memory card to a person who has a device which can read the card and display the images (such as TV PixShare).

Minimum Recommended:

By adding a computer and Internet connection, you gain the ability to edit the images, share them over the Internet, store them on CD's or other media and order prints from an on-line photo processor. The computer should meet the following requirements:

  • Video card and sufficient memory to install and run camera/camcorder software (specifics depend on the camera or camcorder).
  • CD-RW (compact disc read and write) drive to save still pictures and short motion video to CD-R discs.
  • Large hard drive, as both images and image-editing software can be quite large.
  • Appropriate connection ports (depends on camera or camcorder).

If you do not have access to the Internet or a computer, you could instead add a card-to-television device such as TV PixShare, which allows you to edit and display your images on your television.
