Using The Calculator

To use the EC-370 to perform standard arithmetic, memory, percentage, or 
date calculations, press MENU to display the main menu, then press 6 to 
select the calculator icon.  0. Appears on the display.

Calculator Tips

  Press FUNC/C (function/cancel) to cancel the last entry.

  Press ESC/AC (escape/all clear) to clear the display for the next
  calculation.

  When you enter an operator (+, -, x, or /) during a calculation, that 
  operator's symbol appears at the top of the display.

  If you enter the wrong operator during a calculation, simply press the
  correct one to replace it.

  If the result of a calculation is more than 10 digits long or if you try
  to divide a number by 0, E (error) appears.  If this happens, press ESC/
  AC to clear the display.

  A minus sign (-) appears to the left of the number(s) if the result of a 
  calculation is negative.

Arithmetic Calculations

Standard

To perform a standard calculation, press the keys in the order the 
Calculation would appear on paper.  For example:

  You press :       You see

      3 + 4 =          7.

  8 x 3 - 4 =         20.

  6 / 3 + 2 =          4.

Square Root

To perform square root calculations, simply press the number followed by 
the square root key (Square root symbol).

For example, to calculate the square root of 4:

  You press:                 You see:

  4 (square root symbol)        2.

Constant

To perform constant calculations, press the operator key twice when you 
enter the calculation so K appears.

Note: When multiplying, the first value you enter is the constant.  When 
      adding, subtracting, or dividing, the second value you enter is the 
      constant.

Some example calculations:

Multiplication:      5 x 7 = 35
       
                     5 x 9 = 45

                     5 x 10 = 50

  You Press:      You see:

  5 x x 7 =         35.

        9 =         45.

       10 =         50.         

Division:      100 / 5 = 20

               200 / 5 = 40

               300 / 5 = 60

  You Press:      You see:

  5 / / 100 =        20.

        200 =        40.

        300 =        60.

Memory

The memory calculation feature lets you easily do multi-step calculations.

Use the memory keys as follows:

  Press MR to recall the value in memory.

  Press MC to clear the memory.

  Press M- to total a calculation and subtract the total from memory.

  Press M+ to total a calculation and add the total to memory.

For example:

  You press:        You see:

   4 x 5 =  M+        M 20.

  28 + 2 =  M+        M 30.

   7 - 2 =  M-        M  5.

  75 / 5 =  M+        M 15.

            MR        M 60.

Percent

You can calculate percentages using the % key, located on the lower left 
side of the keyboard (above CAPS), as shown here:

To calculate                        You press:        You see:

What is 12% of 150?                 150 x 12 %           18.

What percentage of 880 is 660?      660 / 880 %          75.

What is a 3% markup added to 120?   120 + 3 %           123.7

Time/Date Calculations

Note: The EC-370 lets you enter only dates from January 1, 1901, to
      December 31, 2099, to perform time/date calculations.

Calculating the Number of Days Between Two Dates

Note: The following steps refer to an earlier date and a later date.  If
      you calculate the number of days between December 1, 1997, and
      February 18, 1998, for example, the earlier date is December 1,
      1997, and the later date is February 18, 1998.

1.  Select the calculator function from the main menu (if necessary).

2.  For the later date in the calculation, enter:

      The four-digit year, then press TIME/DATE.

      The month, then press TIME/DATE.

      The day of the month, then press TIME/DATE. The EC-370 automatically 
      calculates the day of the week and displays it on the upper-right
      side of the display.

3.  Press (-) so the minus sign (-) appears.

4.  Repeat Step 2 and enter the year, month, and day of the earlier date
    in the calculation.

5.  Press = to display the result.

Projecting a Date

Follow these steps to project the date that falls a specific number of 
days before or after a date you enter.

Note: For example, enter the date of March 15, 1997, and project the date
      that falls 100 days after it.

1.  Select the calculator function from the main menu (if necessary).

2.  For the date in the calculation, enter:

      The four-digit year, then press TIME/DATE.

      The month, then press TIME/DATE.

      The day of the month, then press TIME/DATE. The EC-370 automatically
      calculates the day of the week and displays it on the upper-right
      side of the display.

3.  If you are projecting back (before the date you entered in Step 2), 
    press (-) so the minus sign appears on the display.

    If you are projecting ahead (after the date you entered), press (+) so 
    the addition sign appears on the display.

4.  Enter the number of days.

5.  Press = to display the projected date.

Note:  To switch to the calendar or schedule function and automatically 
       display the date you projected, see "Switching to a Date in the 
       Calendar/Schedule," below.

Switching to a Date in the Calendar/Schedule

To enter the calendar or schedule function and automatically display the 
date from a time/date calculation, while that date appears on the 
calculator display, press MENU to display the main menu, then select 5 
(calendar) or 4 (schedule).

Using Spell Check/Thesaurus

1.  Press MENU to display the main menu, then press 7 to select the spell 
    check/thesaurus icon.  SPELL CHECKER and ROGET'S II appear briefly,
    then Enter a word appears.

2.  Enter the word (English only) you want to check (up to 16 letters).

    Notes: To clear the entire word from the display and return to the
           prompt, press ON/CLEAR.
    
           The EC-=370's spell check database contains proper nouns (such
           as names of places or people).  If you enter a proper noun, be
           sure to press SHIFT before you enter the first letter so it
           appears in upper case (capitalized).

           If you make a mistake while entering the word, simply press <
           to clear each incorrect letter, then enter the correct
           letter(s).

3.  Press SPELL.  If you spelled the word correctly, Correct! appears on
    the display.

    If you spelled the word incorrectly, Not Found! Searching ....Please 
    wait! appears briefly, then a list of suggested spellings appears.
    For example, if you enter quiat, the EC-370 produces a list of
    suggested spellings beginning with quit.

    If the first suggested spelling is not the word you want, repeatedly
    press \/ or /\ to scroll down or up through the other suggested
    spellings until the word you want appears on the line below Not Found!
    on the display.

4.  To use the EC-370's thesaurus to find one or more words (synonyms)
    with a meaning similar to the selected word, press THES. Correct!
    Thesaurus Search Please Wait appears briefly, then a list of suggested
    synonyms appears.  For example, using the word quit, the EC-370
    produces a list of synonyms beginning with the word abandon. 

    If the first suggested synonym is not the word you want, repeatedly
    press \/ or /\ to scroll down or up through the other suggested
    synonyms until the word you want appears on the line below Not Found!
    on the display.

    Note: If the EC-370 contains no synonym for the word, No Thesaurus! 
          appears.

To check the spelling of, or find a synonym for, another word, press ON/ 
CLEAR to return to the prompt, then repeat Steps 2-3.
