Turning ON The EC-239
Press LOCK, (clock symbol)(TIME), TIMER, (bell symbol)(ALARM), STORE,
CALC, or RECALL to turn on the EC-239.
Note: If you press LOCK, you must input the security code (see "Changing
the Security Code" in Faxback Doc. # 51803).
To conserve battery power, the EC-239 automatically turns off about 7
minutes after you press a key, except when you use the timer.
Checking The Storage Capacity
The EC-239 shows storage capacity in memory units. To see how much memory
is available, press STORE. The number of units available appears in
brackets as shown here.

Using The Key Tone and Hourly Chime
You can set the EC-239 so a tone sounds each time you press a key and a
chime sounds at the beginning of each hour.
Press (clock symbol) (if necessary) to display the date/time, then hold
down S (music symbol) for about 2 seconds. An indicator appears over
CHIME when the tone and chime are on.
Setting The Date and Time
The date and time display shows the day of the month, month, day of the
week, and time.
You can display the time in 12- or 24-hour format. In the 12-hour format,
A or P appears in the lower left corner of the display. To change to the
12-hour format, hold down 12/24 until A or P appears. To change to the
24-hour format, hold down 12/24 until A or P disappears.
The time format also determines the date format. In the 12-hour format,
the month comes first. In the 24-hour format, the day of the month comes
first.
Follow these steps to set the date and time.
1. Press (clock symbol) (if necessary) to display the date/time.
2. Press SET. The date's first digit flashes.
3. Use the keypad to enter the date. If you selected the 12-hour format
for the time, enter the month first. If you selected the 24-hour
format, enter the day of the month first.
4. Enter the desired hour and minutes settings. (You cannot set the
seconds.) For example, to enter 1:00 PM, press 0, 1, 0, and 0 (for
12-hour format) or 1, 3, 0, and 0 (for the 24-hour format).
After you enter the time, the cursor returns to the date's first
digit.
Note: If you need to correct the date or time, repeatedly press > to
move the cursor to the digit you need to change. Then enter
the correct digit.
5. If you are using the 12-hour format, press A (EX 1) or P (ACCT) to
specify AM or PM.
6. Repeatedly press DAY (U) to set the day of the week.
7. When the display shows the correct date and time, press SET to store
the settings. The seconds are set to 0 when you press SET,
Note: If you enter invalid information (for example, you enter 15 for the
month), the display returns to the previous date and time setting,
and the cursor returns to the date's first digit. Enter the correct
information.
Using The Daily Alarm
You can set an alarm to sound at a set time of day. Once you enter the
daily alarm time, you can turn the alarm on so it sounds at the set time,
or you can turn it off so it does not sound. An indicator appears on the
display above ALARM if the daily alarm is turned on. the alarm sounds for
20 seconds. To silence it sooner, press any key.
Notes: If the daily alarm is turned on, it sounds at the set time even if
the EC-239 is off.
Because pressing any key turns off the alarm, the alarm might not
sound if you enter information at the alarm time.
Follow these steps to set the daily alarm.
1. Press (clock symbol) (if necessary) to display the date/time then
press (clock symbol) again. ALARM and the current alarm setting
appear.
2. Press SET. The alarm time's first digit flashes.
3. Enter the alarm time.
4. If you are using the 12-hour format, press A (EX 1) or P (ACCT) to
specify AM or PM.
5. Press SET to store the alarm time.
Note: If the information you enter is invalid, the display returns to the
previous setting.
To turn the daily alarm on or off, press (clock symbol) (if necessary) to
display the date/time then press (clock symbol) again. Then hold down
(music symbol) for about 2 seconds. An indicator appears over ALARM when
the daily alarm is on.
Phone Directory/Memo File
You can enter and easily recall important phone numbers, memos, or other
information. Each record in the directory/memo file has two parts. In
the first part, you enter text, such as a name for a directory listing or
any important information you want to store. In the second part of each
record, you store numeric information such as a phone number.
The first part of each record holds up to 100 characters. The second part
of each record holds up to 64 digits. This includes spaces.
Note: The EC-239 uses the first part of each record to sort the records.
Therefore, we recommend you use a consistent format for entering
records. For example, when you enter names, always enter the last
name first. Otherwise, you might find it difficult to recall stored
records.
Entering a Directory/Memo Record
1. Press STORE. ENTR MESSAGE and the number of available storage units
appears.
2. Use the keypad to enter a person's or company's name, a memo, or any
information you want to store. You can enter letters or numbers.
To enter a space, press SPACE. To erase the last character you
entered, press ERASE.
3. Press STORE. ENTER TEL NO appears.
4. Use the keypad to enter a telephone number or other numeric
information.
If you are storing international long-distance numbers, you can store
a country code by pressing .(S BK) or a city code by pressing = (SCR).
If you do not want to enter a telephone number, go to Step 5.
Note: If you leave this part of the record blank, you cannot add
information to it later. If you plan to enter the phone number
later, enter a dummy phone number such as 000-000-0000.
5. Press STORE. WAIT appears for a few seconds, then the record you
entered appears.
Notes: FULL appears if no storage space is available. Delete outdated
directory/memo records to free additional storage space. See
"Deleting a Directory/Memo Record" below.
If the record has more characters than the display can show at one
time, repeatedly press SCR so you can see the remaining characters.
To change the record, see "Editing a Directory/Memo Record" below.
Recalling a Directory/Memo Record
The EC-239 stores directory/memo records in alphabetical order using the
information you entered in Step 2 under "Entering a Directory/Memo Record"
above.
Note: The EC-239 stores records in numeric order then alphabetic order.
1. Press RECALL (if necessary) so ENTR INITIAL appears.
2. Use the keypad to enter the first few characters of the record you
want to recall, then press RECALL. The EC-239 displays the first
matching record. If the EC-239 cannot find a matching record, NO FILE
appears.
3. Repeat Step 2 to recall more records. Or repeatedly press RECALL to
scroll forward through the records or S BK to return to the first
record.
If NO FILE appears, repeatedly press or hold down RECALL to scroll
through the records, starting with the first record.
4. If the record has more characters than the display can show at one
time, repeatedly press or hold down SCR to see the remaining
characters.
Editing a Directory/Memo Record
Notes: If you did not enter information in Step 4 under "Entering a
Directory/Memo Record" above, when you created a directory/memo
record, you cannot add that information here.
You cannot enter more characters in either part of a record than
you originally entered. For example, if you originally entered a
seven digit phone number, you cannot edit the record to include
the area code. You must delete the entire record then re-enter it.
Follow these steps to edit a directory/memo record.
1. Follow Steps 1 and 2 under "Recalling a Directory/Memo Record" above,
to recall the record you want to edit.
2. Press EDIT (<). The first character of the record flashes.
If you don't need to change the first part of the record go to Step 4.
3. Repeatedly press <(EDIT) or > to move the cursor to the character you
want to change, then use the keypad to enter the correct character.
To enter a space, press SPACE. To erase the last character you
entered, press ERASE. The remaining characters shift left.
4. Press STORE to store the first part of the record. WAIT briefly
appears.
5. If necessary, repeat Step 3 and 4 to change the second part of the
record.
6. Press STORE. The corrected record appears.
Deleting a Directory/Memo Record
1. Follow Steps 1 and 2 under "Recalling a Directory/Memo Record" above,
to recall the record you want to delete.
2. Hold down ERASE for about 5 seconds. WAIT briefly appears and a tone
sounds. Then NO FILE appears to show that the record is deleted.
Schedule Alarms
You can set schedule alarms to remind you of important events. For each
alarm, you also enter a reminder message up to 100 characters long.
At the set time, the EC-239's alarm sounds for about 20 seconds and a
reminder message appears. To silence the alarm sooner, press any key.
Notes: If the EC-239 is off, it automatically turns on at the scheduled
alarm time.
Because pressing any key turns off the alarm, the alarm might not
sound and the alarm message might not appear if you enter
information while a schedule alarm sounds. Also, if the reminder
message appears while you are entering information, the EC-239
might not store the information.
Entering a Schedule Alarm
1. Press STORE. ENTR MESSAGE and the number of available storage units
appears.
2. Press (bell symbol). The current date and time appear, and the date's
first digit flashes.
3. Use the keypad to enter the alarm date and time. If you selected the
12-hour format for the time, enter the month first. If you selected
the 24-hour format, enter the day of the month first.
After you enter the time, the cursor returns to the date's first digit
Note: If you need to correct the date, repeatedly press > to move the
cursor to the digit you want to change. Then enter the correct
digit.
4. If you are using the 12-hour format, press A (EX 1) or P (ACCT) to
specify AM or PM.
5. Press STORE. ENTR MESSAGE and the date you entered then the schedule
alarm appears.
Notes: FULL appears if no storage space is available. Delete out
dated schedule alarms to free additional storage space. See
"Deleting a Schedule Alarm" below.
If the schedule alarm has more characters than the display can
show at one time, repeatedly press or hold down SCR to see the
remaining characters.
To change the schedule alarm, see "Editing a Schedule Alarm"
below.
6. Use the keypad to enter the reminder message. You can enter letters
or numbers in this part of the record.
To enter a space, press SPACE. To erase the last character you
entered, press ERASE.
Recalling a Schedule Alarm
The EC-239 stores directory/memo records in chronological order. Follow
these steps to recall a schedule alarm.
1. Press ALARM. The earliest schedule alarm appears.
Note: If you enter a schedule alarm, the alarm that follows that
schedule alarm appears instead of the earliest schedule alarm.
2. Repeatedly press ALARM to scroll forward through the alarms or S BK to
return to the first alarm.
If NO FILE appears, repeatedly press ALARM to scroll through the
alarms, starting with the first alarm.
3. If the reminder message has more characters than the display can show
at one time, repeatedly press or hold down SCR to see the remaining
characters.
Editing a Schedule Alarm
Notes: If you did not enter information in Step 6 under "Entering a
Schedule Alarm" above, when you created a schedule alarm, you
cannot add that information here.
You cannot enter more characters in a reminder message than you
originally entered. You must delete the entire schedule alarm
then re-enter it.
1. Follow Steps 1 and 2 under "Recalling a Schedule Alarm" above, to
recall the alarm you want to edit.
2. Press EDIT (<). The schedule alarm's date and time appear, and the
first character of the reminder message flashes. If you do not need
to change the alarm date and time, go to Step 4.
3. Repeatedly press <(EDIT) or > to move the cursor to the character you
want to change, then use the keypad to enter the correct character.
To enter a space, press SPACE. To erase the last character you
entered, press ERASE. The remaining characters shift to the left.
4. Press STORE to store the date and time. The alarm date/time and
reminder message appear.
5. If necessary, repeat Step 3 and 4 to change the reminder message.
6. Press STORE. The corrected schedule alarm appears.
Deleting a Schedule Alarm
1. follow Steps 1 and 2 under "Recalling a Schedule Alarm" above, to
recall the alarm you want to delete.
2. Hold down ERASE for about 5 seconds. WAIT briefly appears and a tone
sounds. Then NO FILE appears to show that the record is deleted.
Using The Countdown Timer
You can set the countdown timer to count down so an alarm sounds at the
end if a set time. The timer can count up or down for up to 23 hours, 59
minutes, and 59 seconds.
Notes: The EC-239 does not automatically turn off while the timer runs.
When the timer counts down to 00*-00 00, it counts down again from
23-59-59. When the timer counts up to 23-59-59, it begins counting
up again from 00-00 00. To stop the timer, press STOP (6) or
TIMER.
You cannot run the countdown timer while using any other feature,
because pressing (clock symbol), TIMER, ALARM, STORE or RECALL
stops the timer and resets it to 00-00 00.
Follow these steps to use the countdown timer.
1. Press TIMER. TIMER and 00-00 00 appear.
2. Press SET. The cursor appears beneath the hour's first digit.
3. Enter the number of hours and minutes you want the timer to run before
it sounds. For example, if you want the alarm to sound in an hour and
a half, enter 01 and 30.
Note: The minimum countdown time you can set is 1 minute.
4. Press SET to store the displayed time.
Note: If you enter a number higher than 23 for the hour or 59 for the
minute, the cursor returns to the first digit, and the display
returns to 00-00 00.
5. Press C.DN (3). The timer begins counting down, and the display shows
the remaining time.
At the end of the specified time, an alarm sounds for about 30 seconds
and the display counts down from 23-59. To silence the alarm sooner,
press any key.
To temporarily stop the countdown, press STOP. To continue the countdown,
press C.DN. To stop the countdown and reset the display to 00-00 00, press
TIMER.
Note: To change from countdown to count-up timing, press 9 (C.UP). The
timer begins counting up from the displayed time.
Using The Stopwatch
You can set the stopwatch to let you measure the length of an event.
To use the EC-239's stopwatch, press TIMER. TIMER and 00-00 00 appear.
Then press C.UP. The timer begins counting up, and the display shows the
elapsed time.
To temporarily stop the count, press STOP. To continue the count, press
C.UP. To stop the count and reset the display to 00-00 00, press TIMER.
Note: To change from count up to countdown timing, press C.DN. The timer
begins counting down from the displayed time.
