OVERVIEW
TURNING THE EC-289 ON/OFF
To turn on the EC-289, press [ENTER], [PHONEBOOK FILES],
[ANNIVERSARIES & MEMO/ALERTS], [DAY/DATE & DAILY ALARM],
or [CALCULATOR C/CE].
The EC-289 automatically turns off if you do not press a key for about 3
minutes.
USING THE KEY TONE
Your EC-289 sounds a tone each time you press a key, but you can turn the
tone off.
Repeatedly press [DAY/DATE & DAILY ALARM] until you see the day, date, and
time display.
To turn off the key tone, hold down the period (.) key until the EC-289
beeps twice, with a pause between the beeps.
To turn on the key tone, hold down the period (.) key until the EC-289
beeps.
SETTING/VIEWING THE DAY/DATE/TIME
To set the day, date, and time, follow these steps.
Notes: If you make a mistake in Steps 2-5, you must start again at
Step 1.
To enter a single digit (1-9) in Steps 4 and 5, press [0] first.
For example, to enter 8, press [0] then [8].
1. Press [ENTER]. SELECT MODE and the remaining memory units appear.
2. Press [DAY/DATE & DAILY ALARM]. The screen for setting the day and
time appears, with MONDAY flashing.
3. Repeatedly press [FWD >] until the correct day of the week appears,
then press [RETURN <-].
4. Use the number keys to enter the month, day, and year, then press
[RETURN <-].
5. Use the number keys to enter the current time, then press [A] for AM
or [P] for PM.
6. Press [RETURN <-] to store the settings.
To view the day, date, and time at any time, press
[DAY/DATE & DAILY ALARM].
STORAGE CAPACITY
Your EC-289 can store up to 3,070 units of information in its memory.
Each letter, number, space or other character you store uses about 1
memory unit. Each record you store uses about 4 memory units for
overhead.
For example, a phonebook record containing SMITH.RODNEY in the name field
and 555-1212 in the telephone number field would use 24 memory units.
To view the amount of memory remaining at any time, press [ENTER].
FULL appears if no storage space is available. You must delete phonebook
or memo/alert records to free additional storage space (see "Deleting
Phonebook Records" below or "Deleting Memo/Alert Records" in Faxback Doc.

DATA ENTRY TIPS
When you enter phonebook or memo/alert records:
Use abbreviations to save memory space so you can store more records.
Press [SPACE] to enter a space.
Press [EDIT <] to erase the last character entered.
Press the minus (-) key to enter a hyphen in a telephone or fax
number.
Enter last names first because the phonebook records are stored in
alphabetical order.
You cannot enter a space or a number as the first character in a
record.
MOVING THE CURSOR
The cursor ( _ ) appears when you enter a record and blinks where the next
character will go.
When you edit records, the cursor blinks below the character you are
currently editing. Press [FWD >] or [REV <] to move the cursor to the
right or left along a text line, or press [RETURN <-] to move the
cursor to the next line in the record.
PHONEBOOK
Use the phonebook to store names and telephone and fax numbers.
Each phonebook record has a single-line name field and a 2-line telephone
number field. Each line can contain up to 64 characters, including spaces
and hyphens.
Note: The EC-289 displays only 12 characters per line at a time. If (>)
or (<) appears on the name line, press [FWD >] or [REV <] to view
the characters that have scrolled off the display. Hold down FWD
(>) or [REV <] to scroll rapidly.
ENTERING PHONEBOOK RECORDS
1. Press [ENTER].
2. Press [PHONEBOOK FILES]. TYPE NAME appears.
3. Enter the information you want to store in the name field.
4. Press [RETURN <-]. 1ST TEL. # appears.
5. Enter the telephone or fax number you want to store.
Note: You can enter one or two letters at the beginning of the number
to identify the number's type. The EC-289 accepts the letters
H (home), 0 (office), P (pager), F (fax), and C (cellular).
6. Press [RETURN <-]. 2ND TEL. # appears.
7. Enter the second number, then press [RETURN <-].
If you do not want to enter another telephone number, simply press
[RETURN <-] again to store the record. TYPE NAME appears.
Repeat Steps 3-7 for each phone book record you want to store.
RECALLING PHONEBOOK RECORDS
Scrolling through Records
Press [PHONEBOOK FILES]. NAME/TEL. #? appears.
To scroll backward or forward through the records in alphabetical order,
press [PREV /\] or [NEXT \/].
Hold down [PREV /\] or [NEXT \/] to scroll rapidly backward or forward.
To check if a line in the telephone number field has scrolled off the
display, select that line by repeatedly pressing [RETURN <-] until (>)
appears on the line. If (>) also appears at the end of the name line, the
telephone number on the line you selected has scrolled off the display.
Press [FWD >] or [REV <] to view the rest of the telephone number.
Using Pager ID
Press [PHONEBOOK FILES]. NAME/TEL. #? appears.
Enter up to 8 of the last (rightmost) digits of the phone number you are
searching for. The EC-289 displays the first phonebook record that ends
with the digit(s) you entered.
If no record ends with the digits you entered, NO MATCH appears briefly,
then NAME/TEL. #? appears.
If more than one record ends with the digits you entered, press [NEXT \/]
to scroll forward through the matching records.
Using Name Search
Press [PHONEBOOK FILES]. NAME/TEL, #? appears.
Enter up to 8 of the first (leftmost) characters of the name you are
searching for. The EC-289 displays the first phonebook record that starts
with the character(s) you entered. If there is only one record that
begins with the first letter you enter, that record appears when you press
the first letter.
If no record starts with the characters you entered, NO MATCH appears,
then the EC-289 displays the first record in the phonebook file.
If more than one record starts with the characters you entered, press
[NEXT \/] to scroll forward through the matching records.
EDITING PHONEBOOK RECORDS
Note: If you make a mistake when editing or if you want to abort editing,
simply press [PHONEBOOK FILES] and start over again at Step 1.
1. Recall the phonebook record you want to change.
2. Press [EDIT <-].
If you do not want to change anything in the name field, press
[RETURN <-] to move the cursor to the line you want to edit and skip
to Step 6.
3. Press [FWD >] or [REV <] to move to the character you want to change.
4. To delete a character, press [DELETE []].
To delete the character to the left of the cursor, press [EDIT <-].
To insert characters, simply enter the characters.
5. To move to the first line of the telephone number field, press
[RETURN <-].
6. To delete the characters to the left of the cursor, repeatedly press
[EDIT <-] then enter the correct telephone number.
7. To move to the second line of the phone number field, press
[RETURN <-] then repeat Step 6.
8. Press [RETURN <-] to save your corrections. NAME/TEL. #? appears.
DELETING PHONEBOOK RECORDS
1. Recall the phonebook record you want to delete.
2. Press [DELETE []]. DELETE? Y/N appears.
3. Press [Y] (yes) to delete the record.
Otherwise, press [N] (no). The record remains unchanged.
