OVERVIEW
TURNING THE EC-288 ON/OFF
To turn on the EC-288, press ENTER, PHONE BOOK, MEMO/ALERT, TIME/DATE/
ALARM, CALC/CE, or LOCK.
The EC-288 automatically turns off if you do not press a key for about
3 minutes.
USING THE KEY TONE
Your EC-288 sounds a tone each time you press a key, but you can turn the
tone off.
Repeatedly (if necessary) press TIME/DATE/ALARM until you see the day,
date, and time display.
To turn off the key tone, hold down the period (.) key until the EC-288
beeps twice.
To turn on the key tone, hold down the period (.) key until the EC-288
beeps once.
SETTING/VIEWING THE DAY/DATE/TIME
To set the day, date, and time, follow these steps.
Notes: If you make a mistake in Steps 2-5, start again at Step 1.
To enter a single digit (1-9) in Steps 4 and 5 , press 0 first.
For example, to enter 8, press 0 then 8.
1. Press ENTER. SELECT MODE and the remaining memory units appear.
2. Press TIME/DATE/ALARM. The screen for setting the date and time
appears, with MONDAY flashing.
3. Repeatedly press > until the correct day of the week appears, then
press <-^.
4. Use the number keys to enter the month, day, and year, then press <-^.
5. Use the number keys to enter the current time, then press A for AM or
P for PM.
6. Press <-^ to store the settings.
To view the day, date, and time at any time, press TIME/DATE/ALARM.
STORAGE CAPACITY
Your EC-288 can store up to 3,070 units of information in its memory.
Each letter, number, space, or other character you store uses about 1
memory unit. Each record you store uses about 4 Memory units for overhead.
For example, a phone book record containing SMITH, RODNEY in the name
field and 555-1212 in the telephone number field would use 24 memory
units.
To view the amount of memory remaining at any time, press ENTER.
FULL appears if not enough storage space is available. You must delete
phone book or memo/alert records to free additional storage space (see
"Deleting Phone Book Records" below or "Deleting Memo/Alert Records"
below).
DATA ENTRY TIPS
When you enter phone book or memo/alert records:
Use abbreviations to save memory space so you can store more records.
Press SPACE = to enter a space.
You cannot enter a space or a number as the first character in the
record.
Press <- to erase the last character entered.
Press the minus (-) key to enter a hyphen in a telephone or fax number.
Because the phone book records are stored in alphabetical order, we
recommend you enter last names first.
MOVING THE CURSOR
The cursor (_) appears when you enter a record and blinks where the next
character will go.
When you edit records, the cursor blinks below the character you are
currently editing. Press > or < to move the cursor to the right or left
along a text line, or press <-^ to move the cursor to the next line in the
record.
PHONE BOOK
Use the phone book to store names and telephone and fax numbers.
Each phone book record has one line for the name and one line for each
telephone number. Each line can contain up to 64 characters, including
spaces and hyphens. When a line is full, press <-^.
Note: The EC-288 displays only 12 characters per line at a time. If >
or < appears at the end of the name field line, press > or < to
view the characters that have scrolled off the display. Hold down
> or < to scroll rapidly.
ENTERING PHONE BOOK RECORDS
1. Press ENTER.
2. Press PHONE BOOK. (Phone Symbol) and TYPE NAME appear.
3. Enter the information you want to store in the name field.
4. Press <-^. 1ST TEL. # appears.
5. Enter the telephone or fax number you want to store.
Note: You can enter one or two letters at the beginning of a
telephone number to help you identify the type of number you
have stored in your phone book records. The EC-288 accepts
the letters H (home), O (office), P (pager), F (fax), and C
(cellular).
6. Press <-^. 2ND TEL. # appears.
7. Enter the second number, then press <-^.
If you do not want to enter another telephone number, simply press <-^
again to store the record. TYPE NAME appears.
Repeat Steps 3-7 for each phone book record you want to store.
RECALLING PHONE BOOK RECORDS
SCROLLING THROUGH RECORDS
Press PHONE BOOK. NAME/TEL. #? appears.
To scroll backward or forward through the records in alphabetical order,
press /\ or \/.
Hold down /\ or \/ to scroll rapidly backward or forward.
To view one of the lines in the telephone number field where the digits
have scrolled off the display, repeatedly press <-^ until > appears at
the end of the line you want to view, then press > or < to view the
characters that have scrolled off the display.
USING PAGER ID
Press PHONE BOOK. NAME/TEL. #? appears.
To recall a specific record, enter up to 8 of the last digits in either
line of the telephone number field. The EC-288 displays the first phone
book record that ends with the digits(s) you entered.
Notes: If no record ends with the digits you entered, NO MATCH appears
briefly, then NAME/TEL. #? appears.
If more than one record ends with the digits you entered, press
\/ to scroll forward through the matching records.
USING NAME SEARCH
Press PHONE BOOK. NAME/TEL. #? appears.
To recall a specific record, enter up to 8 of the first characters in the
name field. The EC-288 displays the first phone book record that starts
with the character(s) you entered.
Notes: If no record starts with the characters you entered, NO MATCH
appears, then the EC-288 displays the first record stored in the
phone book file.
If more than one record starts with the characters you entered,
press \/ to scroll forward through the matching records.
EDITING PHONE BOOK RECORDS
Note: If you make a mistake when editing, simply press PHONE BOOK and
start over again at Step 1.
1. Recall the phone book record you want to change.
2. Press <-^.
If you do not want to change anything in the name field, press <-^
to move the cursor to the line you want to edit and skip to Step 6.
3. Press > or < to move to the character you want to change.
4. To delete a character, press DEL.
To delete the character to the left of the cursor, press <-^.
To insert characters, simply enter the characters and press SPACE =
where needed.
5. To move to the first line of the telephone number field, press <-^.
6. To delete the characters to the left of the cursor, repeatedly press
< then enter the correct telephone number.
7. To move to the second line of the telephone number field, press <-^
then repeat Step 6.
8. Press <-^ to save your corrections. NAME/TEL. #? appears.
DELETING PHONE BOOK RECORDS
1. Recall the phone book record you want to delete.
2. Press DEL. DELETE? Y/N appears.
3. Press Y (yes) to delete the record.
Otherwise, press N (no). The record remains unchanged.
MEMO/ALERT
Use the memo/alert file to record appointments and to set reminder alarms.
When the reminder alarm is turned on, the EC-288 beeps for 1 minute and
displays the associated reminder record at the set reminder time. Press
any key to silence the alarm sooner.
Notes: Because pressing any key turns off the alarm, the alarm might not
sound (and the memo might not appear) if you are entering
information precisely at the set reminder alarm time.
The EC-288 displays only 12 characters per line at a time. If
> or < appears at the end of the memo line, press > or < to view
the characters that have scrolled off the display. Hold down >
or < to scroll rapidly.
ENTERING MEMO/ALERT RECORDS
1. Press ENTER.
2. Press MEMO/ALERT.
3. Enter the memo (up to 64 characters) you want displayed when the
reminder alarm sounds (you must enter at least one character).
4. Press <-^. DATE/TIME, MM-DD-YY, HH:MM, and A-P appear.
5. Enter the date of the scheduled event and press <-^. Then, enter
the time of the event. Be sure to press A for AM or P for PM.
You must enter two digits each for the month, date, year, hour, and
minute, for example, to enter June 14, 1998, at 1:15 in the afternoon,
you would type 061498 for the date and 0115 for the time followed by a
P (for PM).
6. Press <-^. ALARM and the stored date and time of the scheduled event
appear.
7. If you want the alarm to sound at the event date and time, press <-^
twice to turn on the reminder alarm and store the memo/alert record.
If you want the alarm to sound on the event date but at a different
time (for example, a few minutes before a scheduled meeting), press
<-^ once, enter the alarm time, then press <-^ to turn on the reminder
alarm and store the memo/alert record.
If you want the alarm to sound on a different date (for example, the
day before a scheduled flight), enter the alarm date, press <-^ once,
then change the time if needed and press <-^.
Repeat Steps 3-7 for each memo/alert record you want to store.
RECALLING MEMO/ALERT RECORDS
Memo/Alert records are stored in order by date and time. To find a
specific record, press MEMO/ALERT. The EC-288 displays the first record
with a date that matches the current date (if any), or the next record in
date order.
Press /\ to scroll backward or \/ to scroll forward through the records.
Hold down /\ or \/ to scroll rapidly.
EDITING MEMO/ALERT RECORDS
Note: If you make a mistake when editing simply press MEMO/ALERT and
start over again at Step 1.
1. Recall the memo/alert record you want to edit.
2. Press <-.
If you do not want to change anything in the memo line, press return
to move the cursor to the line you want to edit and skip to Step 6.
3. Press > or < to move to the character you want to change.
4. To delete a character press DEL.
To delete the character to the left of the cursor, press <-.
To insert characters, simply enter the characters and press SPACE =
where needed.
5. To move to the event date line, press <-^.
6. Press > or < to move to the digit you want to change then type the
correct digit
7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 to do it the event time, alarm date, and alarm
time.
8. From the alarm time line, press <-^ to save your corrections.
DELETING MEMO/ALERT RECORDS
1. Recall the memo/alert record you want to delete.
2. Press DEL. DELETE? Y/N appears.
3. Press Y (yes) to delete the record.
Otherwise, press N (no). The record remains unchanged.
DAILY ALARM
You can set the EC-388 to sound an alarm at the same time every day. When
the daily alarm is turned on, the EC-288 beeps for 1 minute at the set
alarm time. Press any key to silence the alarm sooner.
Notes: If the EC-288 is off when the daily alarm sounds, it turns on and
displays the day, date and time.
Because pressing any key turns off the alarm, the alarm might not
sound if you are entering information precisely at the set daily
alarm time.
Follow these steps to set the daily alarm time and turn on the alarm.
1. Press ENTER.
2. Press TIME/DATE/ALARM twice.
3. Enter the daily alarm time. Be sure to press A for AM or P for PM.
Notes: To enter a single digit (1-9), press 0 first. For example to
enter 8, press 0 then 8.
If you make a mistake when entering the time, simply start
over again at Step 1.
4. Press <-^ to store the alarm time. (Bell Symbol) appears (along with
the current day, date, and time) to show that the alarm is turned on.
To turn off the daily alarm so the EC-288 does not sound, repeatedly press
TIME/DATE/ALARM until DAILY ALARM and the set alarm time appear. Then
press A. (Bell symbol) disappears. To turn the daily alarm back on,
press A again.
SECURITY LOCK
The security lock lets you block access to your phone book and memo/alert
records. Once you set a 2-digit security code, all the records are locked
until you delete the security code. You must enter the security code
before you can create or recall a record.
Note: The EC-288 automatically turns itself off if you do not press a key
for about 3 minutes. Even if you selected a record before the
EC-288 turned off, you must enter your security code again to
select the record.
SETTING THE SECURITY LOCK
1. Press LOCK. KEY CODE and __ appear.
2. Enter any 2-digit security code from 00-99. When you enter the second
digit. LOCKED appears. The EC-288's security lock is turned on.
CAUTIONS: Be careful when setting the security lock. If you
accidentally enter a number that is not what you want to
use, write down the number you entered. You cannot go back
and enter the correct number, but you can change it (see
"Changing the Security Code" below).
Be sure to use a security code you can remember or write it
down in a safe place. If you forget the security code, you
cannot access your phone book or memo/alert records. All
you can do is clear the security lock along with all of
your stored information (see "Resetting the EC-288" in
Faxback Doc. #46765).
When you press PHONE BOOK or MEMO/ALERT after setting the security lock,
KEY CODE? and __ appear. You must enter the correct security code to
access your phone book or memo/alert records.
To reactivate the security lock so no one can see your records before the
EC-288 turns off, simply press LOCK so LOCKED appears.
DELETING THE SECURITY CODE
To delete the security code and unlock your records, follow these steps.
1. Press PHONE BOOK or MEMO/ALERT, so KEY CODE? and __ appear.
2. Press DEL.
3. Enter the current security code. The security lock is deleted.
CHANGING THE SECURITY CODE
1. Press PHONE BOOK or MEMO/ALERT, so KEY CODE? and __ appear.
2. Press DEL. DELETE CODE and __ appear.
3. Enter the current security code.
4. Press LOCK.
5. Enter a new 2-digit code.
CALCULATOR
To use your EC-288's calculator feature, press CALC/CE.
The EC-288 performs standard calculations. Simply press the numbers and
operators in the order they appear in the arithmetic operation.
For squared calculations, simply press the number you want to square x,
then SPACE=.
For example, to calculate 4 ^ 2:
You Press: You See:
4 x <SPACE> = 16
ENTRY ERRORS
If you enter an incorrect value, press CALC/CE once. Then, enter the
correct value and continue your calculation.
If you press an incorrect operator key (+, -, x, /), simply press the
correct key and continue your calculation.
To clear the display for a new calculation, press CALC/CE once (or twice
if a calculation is pending) so 0. appears, then begin the new
calculation.
ERROR MESSAGE
E appears to the left of the numbers when:
A calculation result exceeds 10 digits to the left of the decimal
point. This is an overflow error (see "Estimating Calculation
Results" below).
You try to divide by 0.
If this happens, press CALC/CE twice to clear the display.
ESTIMATING CALCULATION RESULTS
If you perform an operation that results in an overflow error, you
can estimate the correct result.
To estimate the result (to 10 significant digits), follow these steps.
1. Count the number of digits displayed to the left of the decimal point,
then remove the decimal point.
2. Add as many zeros to the right of the number as there were digits to
the left of the decimal point.
For example, if E 1.23456789 appears, the estimated answer is
12,345,678,910. If the EC-288 displays E 98.53893456, the estimated
answer is 985,389,345.600.
