EC-388 Data Directory
(650-0720) Secret Records and Password Faxback Doc. # 45693

For privacy, the EC-388 secret feature lets you store "secret" phone direc-
tory records in memory so they can be accessed only by entering a password
you set.

IMPORTANT: Choose a password (of up to 6 characters) you can easily remem-
ber. If you forget your password, you cannot access any secret
records you stored. You can initialize the EC-388 again then
store a new password; however, initialization deletes all secret
records (see "Initialization" on Faxback Doc. # 40994).

Using The Secret Feature

Follow these steps to set or enter your password and turn on the secret
feature, so you can store new secret records or recall secret records you
previously stored.

1. Press (phone symbol) (if necessary) so NAME? appears.

2. Press (phone symbol) again. If you are turning on the secret feature
for the first time (or after initializing the EC-388), PASSWORD? Set
appears and 0- flashes on the display.

If you previously set a password, Password? Appears.

3. To set your password, type up to six characters (any combination of
numbers, upper- or lower-case letters, or punctuation).

Notes: If you make a mistake, simply move the cursor to each incorrect
character, then press DEL or enter the correct character.

If you have previously set a password, simply type in that pass-
           word.

If you enter an incorrect password, PW. Error! appears briefly,
then Password? Reappears. Enter the correct password.

4. Press (phone symbol). If you are turning on the secret feature for the
first time, 0- appears steadily, and Name? appears.

If you have entered the secret area before, 0- appears and 0- OFF!
appears briefly (to let you know that your secret records are now un-
    locked), then Name? appears.

5. When 0- appears on the left side of the display, this means that the
EC-388's secret feature is turned on - you can store, recall, edit and
delete phone directory records as usual.

Notes: Any record you store while 0- appears on the display can be re-
called only when you are in the secret area.

If the secret feature is on and you recall a record that you
entered while the secret feature was off, 0- appears steadily on
the display to let you know that the selected record is not a
secret record. If you recall a record that was entered while the
secret feature was on, 0- flashes.

You can use both the calculator (see "Calculator" on Faxback Doc.
           # 45694) and conversion (see "Conversions" on Faxback Doc.
           # 45695) functions while the secret feature is turned on.

6. When you finish, you can turn the EC-388 off or let it turn off auto-
matically. The next time someone turns on the EC-388, 0- does not
appear, meaning the secret feature is turned off and no one can see your
    secret records.

Or, to turn off the secret feature immediately so no one can see your
secret records before the EC-388 turns off, repeatedly (if necessary)
press (phone symbol) so 0- ON! appears briefly (to let you know that
your secret records are locked) and 0- disappears from the display.

Changing Your Password

Follow these steps to change a password you previously set.

1. Follow Steps 1-4 in "Turning On/Off the Secret Feature" above to turn
    on the secret feature.

2. Press (phone symbol). The current password and the symbols on the left
    side of the display flash.

3. Press (left arrow or right arrow). The cursor flashes over the first
    character of the password.

4. Type the new password you want to use, then press (phone symbol). Name?
appears and the EC-388 stores the password you just entered.

Note: The secret feature stays on after you change your password. Be
sure you turn off the secret feature when you finish, so no one
can see your secret records before the EC-388 turns off.
