EC-382 128K Electronic Organizer w/Pager and Caller ID
(650-0842) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 45486
Read This Before Installation
We have designed your EC-382 to conform to federal regulations, and you
can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each telephone or other
device you connect to the phone line draws power from the phone line. We
refer to this power draw as the device's ringer equivalence number, or REN.
The REN is on the bottom of your EC-382.
If you are using more than one phone or other device on the line, add up
all the RENs. If the total is more than five, your telephones might not
ring. In rural areas, a total REN of three might impair ringer operation.
If ringer operation is impaired, remove a device from the line.
FCC Statement
Your EC-382 complies with Part 68 of FCC Rules. You must, upon request,
provide the FCC registration number and the REN to your telephone company.
Both numbers are on the bottom of your EC-382.
You must not connect your EC-382 to:
Coin-operated systems.
Party-line systems.
Most electronic key telephone systems.
The FCC Wants You To Know
In the unlikely event that your EC-382 causes problems on the phone line,
the phone company can temporarily discontinue your service. The phone com-
pany attempts to notify you in advance. If advance notice is not practical,
the phone company notifies you as soon as possible and advises you of your
right to file a complaint with the FCC.
Also, the phone company can make changes to its lines, equipment, opera-
tions or procedures that could affect the operation of your EC-382. The
phone company notifies you of these changes in advance, so you can take the
necessary steps to prevent interruption of your phone service.
Using This Manual
The EC-382 lets you use seven different types of records:
Card file
Confidential
Schedule
Alarm
Speed dial
Call block
Caller ID
The sections of this manual that describe how to store and maintain those
records are organized like this:
Entering and Recalling Records: Each record type has its own section to
describe how to enter and recall that type of record. For example, you can
find out how to recall a card file record using Pager ID by looking in
"Pager ID Recall" on Faxback Doc. # 45488.
Note: Caller ID records are stored automatically when there are incoming
calls and Caller ID is turned on.
Editing and Deleting Records: The instructions on how to edit and delete
all record types are grouped together in "Editing a Record" on Faxback Doc.
# 45494 and "Deleting a Record" on Faxback Doc. # 45494 because the proce-
dure is essentially the same for all record types.
Note: Speed dial, Caller ID, and call block records cannot be edited. To
change speed dial and call block records, you must delete the old
record and enter a new one. You cannot change a Caller ID record.
Preparation:
Installing Batteries
Your EC-382 uses two AA batteries (not supplied) for power. For the best
performance and longest life, we recommend alkaline batteries, such as
RadioShack Cat. No. 23-557.
CAUTIONS: Always use fresh batteries of the required size and type.
Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of batteries
(standard, alkaline, or rechargeable), or rechargeable batteries
of different capacities.
1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw on the battery compart-
ment cover.
2. Press and pull the cover's tab to remove the cover.
3. Insert the batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -)
marked inside the compartment.
4. Replace the cover. Secure it with the screw.
Notes: When the display dims or the message LOW BATTERIES PLEASE REPLACE
TO CONTINUE appears, replace the batteries.
When the batteries are dead or removed, you cannot operate the
organizer, but the stored information is saved for about 10 years.
Initializing The Organizer
Initialize your EC-382 before you use it the first time after installing
batteries, or when you want to delete all stored records, alarms, and the
password.
IMPORTANT: This procedure deletes all stored information!
Note: If your EC-382 simply locks up or the display dims, see "Resetting
the Organizer" on Faxback Doc. # 45498.
1. While holding down ENTER and D, insert a pointed object (such as a
straightened paper clip) into the RESET hole on the bottom of the
organizer, then press and release. The display turns black.
2. Release ENTER and D.
3. Press RESET again. The display returns to normal, and all previously
entered information is deleted.
Connecting The Organizer To The Phone Line
Your EC-382 uses modular telephone jacks to connect to the phone and the
phone line. If your telephone or line does not have modular jacks, you can
purchase the necessary adapters at your local RadioShack store. Or, you can
have your local telephone company update your wiring. The USOC number of
the jack to be installed is RJ11C.
Your EC-382 dials using standard touch-tones. If you do not subscribe to
touch-tone service, you must order this service from your local telephone
company.
Follow these steps to connect the organizer to your phone line.
1. Unplug the modular cord from your telephone and plug it into your EC-
382's LINE jack.
2. Plug one end of the supplied modular telephone cord into your EC-382's
PHONE jack. Then plug the cord's other end into the phone's modular
jack.
