EC-388 Data Directory
(650-0720) Operation Faxback Doc. # 40994
INITIALIZATION
You must initialize the EC-388:
* Before you use it for the first time.
* If it is exposed to a strong static electrical charge and/or the display
locks up.
* If you forget the password you set to use the secret feature (see "Secret
Records" on Faxback Doc. # 45693).
Follow these steps to initialize the EC-388.
CAUTION: Initializing the EC-388 deletes all stored information!
1. Carefully insert a pointed object (such as a straightened paper clip)
into RESET on the bottom of the EC-388, then press gently. RESET OK?
appears.
Note: If Reset OK? 0- appears, this means that data is stored in the
EC-388's secret area, and that only secret data will be deleted.
2. To continue the operation and initialize the EC-388, press EXE. Reset!
(or Reset! 0-) appears briefly, then Name? appears.
To cancel the operation and return to the last selected function without
initializing the EC-388, Press any key except EXE.
NOTE: If Reset OK? 0- appeared during Step 1, you must repeat these steps
to delete all data stored outside the secret area.
Basic Operation
Turning ON/Off the EC-388
CAUTION: Be sure you initialize the EC-388 before you use it the first time
(see: "Initialization" above).
To turn on the EC-388, simply press AC/ON. The start-up message (if you
previously stored one; see "Start-Up Message" Faxback Doc. # 45692) appears
for a few seconds, then Name? and the number of stored phone directory
records appear (see "Phone Directory" below).
The EC-388 automatically turns off if you do not press a key for about 7
minutes. To turn it off before then, press OFF.
Storage Capacity
Your EC-388 can store up to 894 units of information in its memory. Each
character you store on the first line of a phone directory record uses 1/2
unit of memory. In addition, each record you store uses about 2 memory
units for overhead.
For example, a record containing Mary Anne 817-555-1234 would use 17 memory
units (9 units for the subject + 6 units for the phone number + 2 units of
overhead = 17 units overall.
Using M. CHECK (Checking the Memory)
To view the amount of memory remaining, press the (phone symbol) (if
necessary) so NAME? appears, then press and hold M. CHECK/EXE. Used and
Remain and the number of memory units used and available appear on the dis-
play until you release the key.
Note: Memory full! appears on the display if no storage space is available
or if the record you are storing is larger than the amount of avail-
able storage space.
Delete phone records to free additional storage space. See "Deleting
Records" below.
Data Entry Tips
The EC-388 sorts phone directory records in alphanumeric order by the
first few characters of the subject line. If you want to recall records
in alphabetical order by last name, enter the person's last name first on
the subject line.
Using abbreviations lets you store more records.
Press SPC to enter a space.
Press A/N then -/H to enter a hyphen.
You can enter numbers, spaces, and hyphens on the second (phone number)
line of a phone directory record, but you cannot enter letters or other
characters.
The _ or [] on the screen is called a "cursor". While entering or editing
a phone directory record, you can press the left or right arrow key to
move the cursor backward or forward on the current line, or press the /\
or \/ key to move the cursor up or down to the other line.
If you make a mistake while entering or editing a record, move the cursor
until it flashes over the incorrect character, then enter the correct
character or press DEL to delete the character.
Using Caps
Each time you turn on the EC-388 or press the (phone symbol) to use the
phone directory, the EC-388 is automatically set ("shift-locked") to enter
upper case letters on the first line of a phone directory record. To remove
the shift-lock so you can enter lower case letters, press CAPS so C (capi-
tal)disappears from the left side of the display.
To shift lock the keyboard again so you enter upper case letters, press CAPS
so C reappears on the display.
Using A/N (Entering Letters, Numbers and Punctuation)
Each rime you turn on the EC-388 or press the (phone symbol) to use the
phone directory, the EC-388 is automatically set to enter letters on the
first line of a phone directory record. To set the EC-388 so you can enter
the numbers or punctuation that appears above the keys on the keypad, press
A/N (alphabet/number). A disappears from the left side of the display.
To set the EC-388 to enter letters again, press A/N so A reappears.
Phone Directory
Entering Records
Each phone directory record consists of a subject line (for storing data
such as the contact and/or company name) and a telephone numbers line. You
can enter up to 24 characters on each line.
For example:
Subject Line:
JENNIFER DOE
Telephone Number Line:
817-555-9382:817-555-1234
This example record uses about 27 memory units (12 units for the subject
+ 12 units for the phone number + about 3 units of overhead = 27 units over-
all). You could enter about 33 records of this length.
Follow these steps to enter a phone directory record.
1. Press (phone symbol) (if necessary) so NAME? And the number of stored
records appear.
2. Enter the information (such as the contact and/or company name) you want
to store on the subject line.
To divide the information into two sections for easy recall later (to
distinguish between a personal and a company name, such as JOHN DOE and
TANDY CORP.), press TAB so right arrow appears where you want to divide
the information.
Notes: A tab (right arrow) uses 1 unit of memory, but does not count toward
the character limit (24) for the subject line.
You cannot enter a tab symbol in the first character position of the
subject line.
3. Press /\ \/ to move the cursor to the phone number line, then enter the
first phone number you want to store.
To enter another phone number and easily recall that number along with the
second part of a divided subject line (if you entered a tab in Step 2),
press TAB so : appears, then enter the second phone number.
Notes: A tab (:) uses 1/2 unit of memory, but does not count toward the
character limit (24) for the phone number line.
You cannot enter a tab symbol in the first character position of the
phone number line.
If you enter a tab on one line but not the other (on the subject line
but not the phone line, for example), you will not be able to easily
recall both parts of both lines (see "Viewing Records" below).
4. Press EXE to store the record. NAME? reappears, and the record you just
stored is added to the number of stored records on the display.
Repeat Steps 2-4 for each phone directory record you want to store.
Recalling Records
To recall a phone directory record stored in the EC-388, you can browse
through all stored phone directory records until you find the one you want
(see "Using Browse" below), or you can search for a specific record (see
"Using Search" below).
Notes: The number of stored records that appears with the NAME? prompt on
the display includes secret records. To enter or recall a secret
record, see "Turning On/Off the Secret Feature" on Faxback Doc.

Appears briefly, then the Name? prompt reappears.
If more than one record starts with the character(s) you entered,
press \/ or /\ to scroll forward or backward through the matching
entries.
Viewing Records
Although the EC-388 can store up to 24 characters on each line of a phone
record, it can only display 12 characters of a display line at one time. If
(left arrow) and/or (right arrow) appear on the display, this means one or
both lines on the display are longer than 12 characters ("extended").
To view the rest of an extended display line, press TAB.
If you did not enter a tab symbol in either line, both lines on the display
shift to the left and the last half of both lines appear.
If you entered a tab symbol in both lines, up to 12 characters to the right
of the tab symbols on both lines appear.
Notes: If you entered a tab symbol in both lines of the selected record and
(right arrow) appears after you press TAB to view that record, you
must press (left arrow), (right arrow) or /\ \/ to move the cursor
and view the rest of that record.
If you entered a TAB symbol on only one line of the selected record,
only that line will shift on the display. If (right arrow) appears
after you press TAB, this means the display line without the tab sym-
bol is extended. To move the cursor and view the rest of that line,
you must press (left arrow, right arrow) or /\ \/.
CAUTION: If you press (left arrow, right arrow) or /\ \/ to view an extended
display line, the EC-388 enters the edit mode (see "Editing
Records" below). Be careful not to add or delete characters while
viewing a record using this method.
Editing Records

3. To edit the character at the cursor position, simply enter the new
character. Or, repeatedly press (left arrow or right arrow) to move
the cursor to the first character you want to change, then enter the
new character. The new character replaces the old one.
Repeat this step for each character you want to edit on the selected
display line.
Notes: To insert space for one or more characters at the cursor position,
press INS once for each character you want to insert. Each time you
press the key, a blank space appears and all characters to the right
of the cursor move one space to the right.
To delete a character/space while editing, simply press DEL.
To insert a tab symbol at the cursor position or move the existing
tab symbol on that line to the current cursor position, simply press
TAB.
To replace a tab symbol with a space or different character, you must
delete the tab symbol first, then enter the space or new character.
4. To move the cursor to the other line and edit that line, press \/ /\
then repeat Step 3.
5. When you finish, press EXE to store the edited phone record. The NAME?
prompt reappears.
