EC-358 Personal Data Directory/Clock/Scheduler
(650-0867) Operation - Part 1 Faxback Doc. # 18499
KEY NAMES
Most of the EC-358's keys serve two purposes. The label on a key shows one
of the key's functions. The label above the key shows the key's other
function. In this manual, we refer to a key by giving the label that
appears on the key followed by the label that appears above the key.
For example, T 12/24 lets you either enter the letter "T" or select the
12-(AM/PM) or 24-hour time format.
TURNING ON THE EC-358
Press TIME, TIMER, ALARM, or RECALL to turn on the EC-358.
AUTOMATIC POWER-OFF
To conserve battery power, the EC-358 automatically turns off after about 7
minutes of non-use.
Note: The EC-358 does not automatically turn off when the timer is running.
STORAGE CAPACITY
The EC-358 shows storage capacity in memory units. For example, a telephone
directory/memo record with a 6-character name and 12-digit telephone number
uses 32 memory units.
To see how much storage space is still available, press STORE. The
remaining space available appears in brackets as shown in the following
example.
NOTE: To make the best use of storage space, use abbreviations.
KEY TONE AND HOURLY CHIME
You can set the EC-358 so a tone sounds each time you press a key and a
chime sounds at the beginning of each hour. An indicator appears on the
display above CHIME if the tone and chime are turned on.
Use the following steps to turn the key tone and hourly chime on or off.
1. If the date and time display does not appear, press TIME.
2. Press and hold down S for about 2 seconds so the CHIME indicator
appears or disappears.
DATE AND TIME
The date and time display shows the month, day of the month, day of the
week, and time (hours, minutes, and seconds).
You can display the time in AM/PM format or 24-hour format. In the AM/PM
format, A or P appears in the lower left corner of the display.
The time format also determines the date format. In the AM/PM format, the
month comes first. In the 24-hour format, the date of the month comes
first.
Complete the following steps to set the date and time.
1. If the date and time display does not appear, press TIME.
To change to the AM/PM format, press and hold down T 12/24 until the A
or P appears. To change to the 24-hour format, press and hold down T
12/24 until the A or P disappears.
2. Press SET to change the date or time. The cursor appears below the
date's first digit.
3. Enter the date. If you selected the AM/PM format for the time, enter
the month first. If you select the 24-hour format, enter the day of the
month first. For example, enter March 25 as:
AM/PM format: 03/25
24-hour format: 25/03
NOTE: Do not enter the / (forward slash).
4. Enter the hour and minutes. (You cannot see the seconds.) For example,
enter 1:00 PM as:
AM/PM format: 01-00
24-hour format: 13-00
NOTE: Do not enter the - (dash).
After you enter the time, the cursor returns to the date's first digit.
NOTE: If you need to correct the date or time, press >> to move the
cursor to the digit you need to change. Then enter the correct
digit.
5. If you are using the AM/PM format, press A or P to specify AM or PM.
6. Repeatedly press U DAY to set the day of the week.
7. When the display shows the correct date and time, press SET to store
the date and time.
NOTE: If the information you enter is invalid (for example, you enter
15 for the month), the display returns to the previous date and
time setting, and the cursor returns to the date's first digit.
DAILY ALARM
You can set an alarm to sound at a set time of day.
Once you enter the daily alarm time, you can turn the alarm on so it sounds
at the set time, or you can turn it off so it does not sound. An indicator
appears on the display above ALARM if the daily alarm is turned on.
NOTE: The alarm sounds for 20 seconds. To silence the alarm sooner, press
any key.
If the daily alarm is turned on, it sounds at the set time even if
the EC-358 is off.
Because pressing any key turns off the alarm, the alarm might not
sound if you enter information at the alarm time.
Setting the Daily Alarm
Set the daily alarm as follows.
1. If the display does not show the date and time, press TIME twice. If
the display already shows the date and time, press TIME once. ALARM and
the current alarm setting appear on the display.
2. Press SET. Then enter the alarm time.
3. If you are using the AM/PM format, press A or P to specify AM or PM.
4. Press SET to store the alarm time.
NOTE: If the information you enter is invalid, the display returns to
the previous setting.
Turning the Daily Alarm On or Off
Follow these steps to turn the daily alarm on or off.
1. If the display does not show the date and time, press TIME twice. If
the display already shows the date and time, press TIME once.
2. Press and hold down S for about 2 seconds. The ALARM indicator appears
or disappears to show that the daily alarm is turned on or off.
DIRECTORY/MEMO FILE
You can enter and easily recall important phone numbers, memos, or other
information. Each record in the directory/memo file has two parts. In the
first part, you enter text, such as a name for a directory listing or any
important information you want to store. In the second part of each record,
you store numeric information, such as a phone number.
The first part of each record holds up to 100 characters. The second part
of each record holds up to 64 characters. This includes spaces.
NOTE: The EC-358 uses the first part of each record to sort the records.
Therefore, we recommend you use a consistent format for entering
records. For example, when you enter names, always enter the last
name first. Otherwise, you might find it difficult to recall stored
records.
Entering a Directory/Memo Record
Complete these steps to enter each record into the directory/memo file.
1. Press STORE. ENTR MESSAGE and the amount of available storage appear
on the display.
2. Enter the person's or company's name, a memo, or any information you
want to store. In this part of the record, you can enter letters or
digits.
To enter a space, press SPACE. To erase the last character entered,
press ERASE/C/CE.
3. Press STORE. ENTER TEL NO appears on the display.
4. Enter the telephone number or any numeric information you want to
store. If you do not need to enter information in this part of the
record, go to Step 5.
NOTES: To enter a dash, press L-.
If you leave this part of the record black, you cannot add
information to it later. If you plan to enter the phone number
later enter a dummy phone number. For example, for a long-
distance number, enter 000-000-0000.
You cannot enter letters in this part of the record.
For international long-distance phone numbers, enter the
special code symbols as follows:
Code: Press:
Country (2 bars) .SBW
City (3 bars) =SCR
5. Press STORE. WAIT briefly appears on the display, then the display
shows the record you entered.
NOTES: FULL appears on the display if no storage space is available.
Delete outdated directory/memo records or schedule alarms to free
additional storage space. See "Deleting a Directory/Memo Record" or
"Deleting a Schedule Alarm.".
If the record has more characters than the display can show at one
time, repeatedly press or press and hold down = SCR so you can see
the remaining characters.
To change the record, see "Editing a Directory/Memo Record."
Recalling a Directory/Memo Record
The EC-358 stores directory/memo records in alphabetical order using the
first part of the record.
NOTE: If you have records that begin with digits, the EC-358 stores the
records first in numeric order and then in alphabetical order.
Follow these steps to recall a directory/memo record.
1. If the display already shows a directory/memo record, go the Step 2. If
the display does not show a directory/memo record, press RECALL. ENTR
INITIAL appears.
2. Enter the first few characters of the record you want to recall. Then
press RECALL. The EC-358 displays the first matching record.
3. To recall other records, repeat Step 2. Or press RECALL to scroll
forward or .SBW to scroll backward through the records.
When No FILE appears, press (or press and hold) RECALL to begin
scrolling forward from the first record.
4. If the record has more characters than the display can show at one
time, repeatedly press or press and hold = SCR so you can see the
remaining characters.
Editing a Directory/Memo Record
NOTE: If you did not enter information in the second part of a record when
you created it, you cannot add that information here. Also you can
not enter more characters in either part of a record than you
originally entered. For example, if you originally entered a seven-
digit phone number, you cannot edit the record to include the area
code. To change a record in either of these ways, delete the record
and re-enter it.
Follow these steps to edit a directory/memo record.
1. If the record you want to edit does not already appear on the display,
recall the record as described in "Recalling a Directory/Memo Record."
2. Press << EDIT. The cursor appears below the first character of the
record. If you do not need to change the first part of the record, go
to Step 5.
3. Press << or >> to move the cursor to the character you want to change.
4. To replace a character, enter the correct character. To delete a
character, press ERASE/C/CE; the remaining characters shift to the
left.
5. Press STORE to store the first part of the record. WAIT briefly
appears.
6. If necessary, complete Steps 3 and 4 to change the second part of the
record.
7. Press STORE. The display shows the corrected record.

1. If the record you want to delete does not already appear on the display
recall the record as described in "Recalling a Directory/Memo Record."
2. Press and hold down ERASE/C/CE for about 5 seconds. WAIT briefly
