EC-442
(650-0847) Communication Functions Faxback Doc. # 15807
Using optional accessories, the EC-442 can share information with another
EC-442 or with an IBM-compatible PC. These accessories are available by
special order from your local Radio Shack store.
This section explains how to use the optional transfer cable (CMC Cat. No.
T65-137) that allows you to share information with another EC-442. For
full details on using the interface unit for transferring data to a PC
(CMC Cat. No. T65-848), see the PC interface unit's owner's manual.
NOTES: You can only transfer information to another EC-442 or to a PC.
You cannot communicate with a different type of databank, even if
it also has a transfer function.
You cannot select the FDD option you see on the menu. This
selection is not currently used.
When transferring data to/from your PC, you might need to set the
communication parameters to match your computer. See your
computer's user's guide for more information.
Records sent to a receiving EC-442 are added to its existing
records.
Data Transfer Between Two EC-442s
Before actually performing the data transfer, you should understand these
guidelines for data communications.
You have several transfer options:
All Records: sends all records stored in the databank - telephone
directory, memo, reminder, scheduler, and calendar.
One Record: sends one selected telephone, memo, reminder, or scheduler
record.
Mode Records: sends all of the records contained in a particular mode
--telephone, memo, calendar, scheduler or reminder.
In the scheduler, this option sends all the schedule
information stored for a specific period.
In the calendar mode, this option sends highlighted dates
for a specific time range.
Month Data: sends the highlighted date information for a specific month.
If you enter the secret area at any time during the operation, the
databank sends only the secret area information. Otherwise, the databank
sends only the open information.
To transfer information, you must connect the EC-442s using the optional
data transfer cable, set the communication parameters, prepare to receive
data, and then send the data.
Connecting the EC-442s
1. Turn off both EC-442s.
2. Remove the connector covers from both databanks.
NOTE: Be careful not to lose the connector covers. You should place them
over the jacks whenever you do not have a cable connected.
3. Connect the two databanks using the data transfer cable.
Setting the Communication Parameters
Before the EC-442s can communicate, you must set up communication
parameters so the two databanks can "understand" each other. Follow these
steps to set the parameters on both units to the same settings.
NOTE: When transferring data between EC-442s, it generally does not
matter which selections you choose, as long as they are the same
for both units. However, if you receive repeated error messages
when attempting data transfer, you might want to try the slower
(2400) BPS setting.
1. While in the initial display of the telephone directory, memo,
scheduler, calendar, or reminder mode, press FUNC twice so DATA COMM
appears on the function menu.
2. Press 4 to select DATA COMM.
3. Press 3 to select SET UP.
The databank highlights the currently selected parameters, with the PARITY
selection flashing.
Parity: E (even) O (odd) N (none)
Bit Length: 7/8 (bits)
BPS (Bits per second): 2400/4800
4. Press UP SYMBOL or DOWN SYMBOL to select the parameter you want to
change. Press RIGHT SYMBOL or LEFT SYMBOL to select (highlight) the
appropriate setting.
5. When you have made your selection(s), press SET.
Preparing to Receive Data
1. Turn on the receiving EC-442 and select the telephone directory, memo,
scheduler, calendar, or reminder mode. Press FUNC twice so DATA COMM
appears on the function menu.
NOTE: On the receiving EC-442, you can select any data storage mode
display (NOT the calculator, home time, or world time display)
for the transfer, regardless of the number of records or the
record type.
2. Press 4 to select DATA COMM.
3. Press 2 to select RECEIVE. The following standby display appears.
4. Transmit data from another EC-442 as instructed in "Sending Data."
The display goes blank.
To cancel the receive operation at any time, press ESC.
The transmitted data is added to the receiving EC-442's memory. When data
transmission is complete, the number of records received appears on the
display.
NOTES: If an error occurs during the receive operation, RECEIVE ERROR!
appears on the display. Press ESC to clear the error message.
Then check to make sure you have set both units to the same
parameters and securely connected the transfer cable.
If the receiving unit's memory capacity is reached during the
receive operation, MEMORY FULL! appears and data transfer stops.
Press ESC to clear the error message. Then try one or all of the
following: delete entries from the receiving and/or transmitting
units (including any records that might have already transferred
that you do not want); transfer records to your PC or other files;
or select a smaller amount of information to be sent from the
transmitting unit.
Sending Data
NOTE: Transmission procedures differ, depending on what information you
wish to send. Read all the instructions in this section carefully
before sending data.
1. Turn on the transmitting EC-442 and select the telephone directory,
memo, scheduler, calendar, or reminder mode. Display the information
you want to transfer as follows:
One Record: Recall the record and position it at the top of the
display.
All Records in a Mode: Any display within the mode for which you want
to transfer records.
All Records for All Modes: Any data storage mode display (NOT the
calculator, home time, or world time display).
Press FUNC twice so DATA COMM appears on the function menu.
2. Press 4 to select DATA COMM.
3. Press 1 to select SEND.
4. Press the number for the data you want to transfer.
3 ALL DATA - This option transmits all telephone
directory, memo, reminder, scheduler,
and calendar information (in that
order).
1 ONE ITEM - This option transfers one record.
Recall the record you want to transmit
and position it at the top of display.
Press DISP CHNG to display the full
record.
(From the calendar) 1 MONTH - This option transfers highlighted dates
for one month. Display the calendar
for the month you want to send.
NOTE: If the corresponding calendar in the receiving unit contains
highlighted dates, the received data is ignored. Clear the
highlight(s) from the receiving unit before sending data.
2 MODE DATA - This option transfers all the
information in the telephone directory,
memo, or reminder modes.
(Scheduler Mode) 2 MODE DATA - This option transfers all scheduler
data from the currently selected date
through a range you specify. To enter
the range, enter the year you want the
transfer to end, press DATE/TIME, enter
the month, press DATE/TIME, enter the
date, and press DATE/TIME.
NOTE: The scheduler does not send reminder mode data. Use the
reminder mode to send all reminder mode records.
(Calendar Mode) 2 MODE DATA - Display the starting month for the
period you want to send. Press 2 to
select MODE DATA. Enter the ending
year for the period and press
TIME/DATE . Enter the month and press
TIME/DATE. If the ending month/year is
before the starting month/year, the
start and end are switched
automatically.
5. Press SET to proceed with the transmission or ESC to cancel.
NOTE: If an error occurs during the send operation, SEND ERROR! appears
on the display. Press ESC to clear the error message. Then check
to make sure you have set both units to the same parameters and
securely connected the transfer cable.
When the transmission is over, the display returns to the initial
mode screen.
