ET-493 (430-0575B) Installation Faxback Doc. # 6513

We have designed the telephone to conform to federal regulations, and you
can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each device that you
connect to the phone line draws power from the phone line. We refer to
this power draw as the device's ringer equivalence number, or REN. The
REN is shown on the bottom of the phone.

If you are using more than one phone or other device on the line, add up
all the REN's. If the total is more than five, your phones might not
ring. In rural areas, a total REN of three might impair ringer operation.

FCC STATEMENT

This telephone complies with Part 68 of FCC Rules. You must, upon
request, provide the FCC Registration Number and the REN to your phone
company. These numbers are located on the bottom of your phone.

Note: You must not connect the phone to any of the following:

       Coin-Operated systems

       Party-line systems

       Most electronic key phone systems

Warning: To prevent fire or shock hazard, and damage to your telephone,
do not expose it to rain or moisture.

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK. DO NOT REMOVE THE COVER
(OR BACK). NO USER-SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE. REFER SERVICING

presence of uninsulated dangerous voltage within the
products enclosure that may be of sufficient magnitude
to constitute a risk of electric shock to persons.

Exclamation Point: This symbol is intended to alert the user to the
presence of important operating and maintenance

INSTALLATION

SELECTING A LOCATION

You can place the phone on a desk, shelf, or table. Select a location
that meets the following requirements:

  Near an AC outlet

Near a modular phone line jack

Out of the way of normal activities

Away from electrical machinery, electrical appliances, and metal walls
  or filing cabinets

Away from wireless intercoms, security alarms, and room monitors

The base's location affects the phone's range. If you have a choice of
several locations, try each location to see which one provides the best
performance.

If the phone line jack is not a modular jack, you must update the wiring.
You can convert the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters available
at your local Radio Shack store. Or, you can let the phone company update
the wiring for you.

Note: The phone company will charge you for the installation of the
necessary jacks. The phone company will ask you for the USOC
number of the jack to be installed. This number is RJ11C for a
       baseboard jack.

CONNECTING THE PHONE

After you select a location for the phone, follow these steps to connect
it to AC power and to the phone line.

1. Attach the supplied antenna to the handset by screwing the antenna
into the hole on top of the handset.

2. Plug one end of the supplied modular cord into the phone line jack on
    the back of the base.

3. Plug the modular cord's other end into a modular phone line jack.

4. Insert the supplied AC adapter's barrel plug into the DFC 12V jack on
    the back of the base.

5. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet.

PREPARATION

After you install the phone, complete the procedures in this section.

CHARGING THE BATTERY

You must charge the phone's handset battery for at least 24 hours before
you use the phone. Recharge the battery when the LOW BATT indicator on
the handset lights.

Note: If charged as described below, the supplied handset battery should
last for several years. When the battery loses its ability to
fully recharge, take the phone to your Radio Shack store so they
can arrange to have the battery replaced.

Follow these steps to charge the battery.

1. Set RINGER to POWER OFF.

2. Place the handset on the cradle. The CHARGE indicator on the base
    lights.

Notes: If battery power is low, RINGER is set to LO or HI, and the
handset is not in use, LOW BATT slowly flashes. If battery power
is too low, the LOW BATT indicator does not light.

The battery can recharge if RINGER is set to LO or HI, but it
recharges more quickly if you set RINGER to POWER OFF.

If the CHARGE indicator does not light when you place the handset
on the cradle, be sure the battery and AC adapter are correctly
        and securely connected.

Also, check the charging contacts on the handset and base. If the
contacts are dirty or tarnished, clean them with a pencil eraser.

This product contains a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery. At
the end of the battery's useful life, it must be recycled or
disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state
hazardous waste management authorities for information on
recycling or disposal programs in your area.

The first time you use the phone, you might hear an error
tone. This occurs if the access-protection code is not set. (You
do not hear the error tone if RINGER is set to POWER OFF.)

If you hear the error tone, lift the handset, set RINGER to LO or
HI, and return the handset to the cradle to reset the access-
        protection code.

About once a month, fully discharge the battery. Otherwise, the
battery loses its ability to fully recharge and you will have to
        replace it more often.

To fully discharge the battery, keep the handset off the cradle
until the LOW BATT indicator lights. Then return the handset to
the cradle and fully recharge the battery.

SETTING THE DIALING MODE

Set PULSE-TONE for the type of service you have. If you are not sure
which type of service you have, do the following.

1. Set RINGER to LO or HI.

2. SET PULSE-TONE to TONE.

3. Lift the handset and listen for a dial tone.

4. Press any number other than 0.

If the dial tone stops, you have touchtone service.

If the dial tone continues, you have pulse service. Set PULSE-TONE to
    PULSE.

SETTING THE RINGER SWITCH

The Ringer switch controls the volume for the ringer, the pager and the
buttonpress confirmation tones. Set RINGER to LO or HI for a low or high
volume level. Set RINGER to POWER OFF to turn off the handset.

If you set RINGER to POWER OFF, you can still answer calls if you hear the
ringer of another phone on the same phone line. Lift the handset from the
cradle, set RINGER to LO or HI, and return the handset to the cradle.
Then lift the handset to answer the call.

Note: During normal operation, keep RINGER set to LO or HI.
