Note: You can use the keypad on either the handset or the base to operate
the ET-688. To make a call with the speakerphone, you must use the
base's keypad; to make a call with the handset, you must use the
handset's keypad.
HANDSET OPERATION
Making a Call
To make a call using the handset, lift the handset from the base and
listen for a dial tone. Or if the handset is away from the base, simply
press Talk and listen for a dial tone. The ET-688 automatically selects
an open line, and a clear channel.
On the handset, the Talk/Batt Low indicator and a Line indicator light.
The indicator for the same line lights on the base, indicating that line
is in use at the handset. Use the handset keypad to dial the desired
number.
You can also press Line 1 or Line 2 to directly select the line you want
to use. If either indicator is on, someone at the base is using that line
on the speakerphone. Press the line button for a line that is not in use.
To end a call, press Talk on the handset or place the handset on the base.
Answering a Call
To help you tell which line is ringing, each line has a distinctive ring
tone.
To answer a call, simply lift the handset. If the handset is away from
the base, press Talk to answer the flashing line. The Talk/Batt Low
indicator and the Line 1 or Line 2 indicator on the handset light. The
indicator for the line in use lights on the base.
To end a call, press Talk on the handset or place the handset on the base.
Notes: If the handset is too far away from the base, the ET-688 sounds an
error tone and then disconnects the call.
When you receive an incoming call on one line while you are using
the handset to talk on the other, the handset does not ring but
you hear a tone through the earpiece. Place the current call on
hold (see "Putting a Call on Hold" below), then press the line
button for the incoming call.
If you press the other line's button without first pressing Hold,
the first call is disconnected.
Changing the Channel
If you notice interference, static, or noise during a call, press Ch/Pause
to find a clearer channel.
The ET-688 changes to a different channel each time you press CH/Pause to
find a clearer channel.
Note: If the handset is too far away from the base, the channel might not
change. Move closer to the base and try again.
Setting the Handset Volume
To increase the volume you hear through the handset, press Vol/Ring once
during a call. When you hang up, the volume returns to a normal level.
Or, press Vol/Ring again during the call to resume the normal level.
SPEAKERPHONE OPERATION
Making a Call
To make a call using the speaker phone, simply press Speaker. The ET-688
automatically selects an open line, and the speaker indicator and either
the Line 1 or Line 2 indicator lights on the base. The indicator for the
same line lights on the handset as a reminder that the line is in use.
Use the keypad on the base to dial the desired number.
You can also press Line 1 or Line 2 to directly select the line you want
to use. If either indicator is on, someone at the handset is using the
line. Press the line button for a line that is not in use.
Answering a Call
To answer a call using the speakerphone simply press Speaker or either
Line 1 or Line 2 (which ever is flashing). The speaker indicator and the
selected line's indicator light. The indicator for the line in use lights
on the handset.
To end a speakerphone call, simply press Speaker. The speaker and line
indicators turn off.
Note: When you receive an incoming call on a line while you're talking on
the speakerphone on the other line, the other line's indicator
flashes. Place the current call on hold (see "Putting a Call on
Hold" below), then press the line button for the incoming call.
Pressing the line button without placing the first call on hold
disconnects the first call.
Adjusting the Speakerphone Volume
Slide Volume on the right side of the base to adjust the speakerphone's
volume so you can hear the other party at a comfortable level.
Using Mute
While using the speakerphone, you can talk to someone else in the room
without the person on the other end of the phone line hearing your
conversation. Press Mute during the call. The Mute indicator lights.
Press Mute again to resume your phone conversation. The indicator turns
off.
PUTTING A CALL ON HOLD
Press Hold on either the handset or the base to put a call on hold. While
a call is on hold, you can temporarily place the handset on the base or
use the other phone line without disconnecting the current call.
When you put a call on hold at the base, the line indicator flashes on
both the base and handset. When you put a call on hold at the handset,
the handset's Talk/Batt Low indicator turns off and the line indicator
flashes on both the handset and base.
To release a line from hold and continue your conversation, press that
line's button. You can also release a call from hold by pressing Talk,
lifting the handset from the base, or pressing Speaker on the base.
You can alternate between the two lines by pressing Hold then the button
for the desired line.
Notes: If you press the other line's button without first pressing Hold,
the first call is disconnected.
If you place both lines on hold and then press Talk, lift the
handset from the base, or press Speaker, the line you dialed last
is released from hold and the line you dialed first remains on
hold.
You can also pick up the call on hold by picking up an extension
phone.
SWITCHING BETWEEN THE HANDSET AND SPEAKERPHONE
To switch to the speakerphone while you are using the handset, press Hold
on the handset, then press Speaker or that line's button (Line 1 or Line
2) on the base.
To switch to the handset while you are using the speakerphone, just lift
the handset off the base. Or, if the handset is off the base, press Hold
on the base, then press Talk or that line's button (line 1 or Line 2) on
the handset.
Using Both the Handset and Speakerphone
If you make or answer a call using one keypad (speakerphone or handset),
someone else can press the corresponding line button on the other keypad
and join the conversation.
During the call, one of you can hang up and the call can continue.
Note: If you hear a high-pitched noise from the base's speaker, the
handset and the base are too close together.
To talk with two parties (4-way conference) using both lines, see "4-Way
Conferencing" below.
MAKING A CONFERENCE CALL
3-Way Conferencing
1. Place the first call on hold.
2. Make or answer a call on the other line.
3. Once you have the second party on the line, press Conf to bring in the
first party. The Talk/Batt Low indicator briefly flashes, then you
can talk with both parties.
4. To end the conference call, press Talk or return the handset to the
base, or press Speaker on the base.
If you want to talk on one line without disconnecting the other, press
Hold, then the button for the line you want to talk on. To return to a
3-way conversation, press Conf.
If you want to hang up one line and continue talking on the other, press
the line button for the line you want to keep.
4-Way Conferencing
1. Make a 3-way conference call.
2. Press Intcm on the handset or Intercom on the base to page the other
keypad.
3. To answer the page press Intcm on the handset, or Speaker on the base,
then press Conf.
To end the conference call, press Talk or return the handset to the base,
or press Speaker on the base.
If you want to talk on one line without disconnecting the other, press
hold, then the button for the line you want to talk on. To return to a
4-way conversation, press Conf and repeat Step 2 above.
If you want to hang up one line and continue talking on the other, follow
these steps.
1. Press Hold to place both calls on hold.
2. Press the line button for the call you want to end, then press Speaker
on the base or Talk on the handset. This disconnects the call on that
line and the other keypad.
3. Press the line button for the call you want to continue, then resume
the conversation.
Note: You can also make a conference call using both the ET-688 and an
extension phone. (See "Using the ET-688 with Extension Phones).
USING THE ET-688 WITH EXTENSION PHONES
The ET-688 detects the status (on or off-hook) of any extension phones
connected to the same lines. If you pick up an extension phone, the
corresponding line indicators (Line 1 or Line 2 on the ET-688 will light,
indicating which lines are in use.
You can release any call put on hold on the ET-688 by picking up an
extension phone.
Notes: If you use Hold during an intercom function (see "Using the
Paging/Intercom Features" below), it cannot be released by an
extension phone.
If you hang up the ET-688 and someone is still on that line on an
extension, the ET-688's line indicator(s) might not stay lit.
USING REDIAL
You can quickly dial the last number dialed on either line 1 or line 2.
When you hear a dial tone, simply press Redial (Flash/Redial on the
handset).
Notes: The redial memory is independent for each keypad. You cannot
redial a number you dialed on the handset keypad using Redial on
the base keypad, and vice versa.
The redial memory holds up to 32 digits, so you can redial long
distance as well as local numbers.
The redial memory does not store a flash entry or any digits you
press after Flash (see "Using Flash").
USING FLASH
Flash (Flash/Redial on the handset) performs the electronic equivalent of
a switchhook operation for special services, such as Call Waiting.
For example, if you have Call Waiting, press Flash to answer an incoming
call without disconnecting the current call. Press Flash again to return
to the first call.
Note: If you do not have any special services, pressing Flash might
disconnect the current call.
USING TONE SERVICES ON A PULSE LINE
Some special services, such as bank-by-phone, require tone signals. If
you have pulse service, you can still use these special tone services by
following these steps.
1. Be sure PULSE TONE is set to PULSE.
2. Dial the service's main number.
3. When the service answers, press Tone/*. Any additional numbers you
dial are sent as tone signals.
4. After you complete the call, the phone automatically resets to the
pulse mode when you hang up.
USING THE PAGING/INTERCOM FEATURES
You can use the ET-688 as a two-way pager and intercom between the base
and the handset. This is useful if the handset is away from the base and
you want to locate it, or if you want to have a conversation between the
handset and the base.
To page the handset or base, press Intercom (on the base) or Intcm (on the
handset). Both the base and the handset ring.
To answer the page, press Talk or Intcm (on the handset) or Speaker (on
the base). To end the intercom call, press Speaker (on the base) or talk
(on the handset), or hang up the handset.
During a call, you can page someone at either the base or the handset to
join the conversation. Press Intercom (on the base) or Intcm (on the
handset). The current call is put on hold. When the person at the base
or handset answers, tell them to press Speaker or Talk then Conf to join
the conversation.
Notes: The handset cannot page the base if the base is in use. The base
cannot page the handset if the handset is in use.
If a call comes in during an intercom conversation, either of the
intercom parties can answer the call as they normally would.
Simply press the ringing line's button. The intercom call
automatically disconnects.
Using as a Room Monitor
You can use the intercom function as a room monitor.
To listen in the room where the base is located, press Intcm on the
handset. When the intercom beep sounds, press Talk. To end the room
monitor call, press Talk again.
