ET-688 2-Line 900-MHz Cordless Speakerphone
(430-0688) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 50420
CONNECTING AND CHARGING THE BATTERY PACK
The ET-688 comes with a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery pack in the
handset but not connected. Before using your phone, you must connect the
battery pack, then charge it for about 14 hours.
1. Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow to
remove it.
2. Unfasten the plastic retainer strap and lift the battery pack out of
the compartment. Plug the battery pack's connector into the socket in
the compartment. The connector fits only one way.
3. Replace the battery pack inside the compartment and refasten the
retainer strap.
4. Replace the cover.
5. To charge the battery pack, place the handset on the base either face
down or standing upright. The Charge indicator on the base lights.
Recharge the battery pack when the Talk/Batt Low indicator on the handset
flashes.
Notes: If the Charge indicator does not light when you place the handset
on the base, be sure the battery pack and AC adapter are
correctly, and securely connected.
Using a pencil eraser, clean the charging contacts on the handset
and the base about once a month to make sure they are not dirty or
tarnished.
When you first use the phone after charging or recharging the
battery pack, the phone might not work and you might hear an error
tone. If this happens, return the handset to the base for a few
seconds.
If the Talk/Batt Low indicator does not flash and the phone does
not work, recharge the battery pack. (The battery charge might be
too low to light the indicator.)
If the battery pack gets weak during a call, the handset beeps
every 30 seconds, and the Talk/Batt Low indicator flashes. If
this happens, you must recharge the battery pack before you can
make another call.
If the battery pack gets completely discharged or the base loses
power while the handset is away from it, the security access
protection code needs to be reset. To reset the security code,
place the handset on the base. If it was the handset that lost
power, leave the handset on the base to charge the battery pack.
About once a month, fully discharge the battery pack by keeping
the handset off the base until the Talk/Batt Low indicator
flashes. Otherwise, the battery pack loses its ability to fully
recharge.
The supplied battery pack should last for about a year. When the
battery pack loses its ability to fully recharge, order a
replacement battery from your local RadioShack store (see
"Replacing the Battery Pack" in Faxback Doc. # 50424).
SETTING THE DIALING MODE
Set PULSE-TONE on the back of the base for the type of service you have.
If you are not sure which type you have, do this test.
1. Set PULSE-TONE to TONE.
2. Press Speaker on the base. The Line 1 indicator lights. Then listen
for the dial tone.
3. Press any number other than 0.
Note: If your phone system requires that you dial an access code (9,
for example) before you dial an outside number, do not press
the access code either.
If the dial tone stops, that line has tone service.
If the dial tone continues, that line has pulse service.
4. Press Line 2, listen for the dial tone, and repeat Step 3.
If you have tone service on both lines, leave PULSE-TONE to PULSE.
ADJUSTING THE RINGER
The ET-688 lets you control its base and handset ringer volume separately.
You can choose from a high or low ringer setting for the base and the
handset.
Note: If you turn off the ringer on the base and place the handset on the
base, neither ringer will sound. You can still make calls normally
using either of the ET-688's keypads, and you can still answer
calls if you hear another phone on the same line(s) ring. (See
"Operation" in Faxback Doc. # 50421.)
On the Handset
The handset's ringer always sounds when the handset is away from the base.
You can select a high or low ringer volume setting on the handset while
the phone is not in use.
Lift the handset. If you hear a dial tone, press Talk to turn it off.
Then press Vol/Ring. The phone sounds the current ringer volume. Press
Vol/Ring again while the ringer is sounding to select the other setting
(high or low).
On the Base
You can set RING VOL on the back of the base to high, low, or off.
USING THE BELT CLIP
You can attach the supplied belt clip to the handset for hands-free
convenience as you move around your home or office. Remove the cover on
top of the handset to expose the belt clip slot, then attach the belt
clip.
To remove the belt clip, pull back the small tab in the opening at the top
of the clip. Then pull out the clip, and replace the cover in the slot on
the handset.
