Using the Phone

The next few pages in this section will tell you everything you need to
know to operate your M70 cellular phone.

Turning the Phone On and Off

Follow these steps to turn your phone ON:

1.  Extend the antenna for best performance.

2.  Open your keypad cover to expose the keypad.

3.  Press [PWR] once to turn the phone ON.

    Press [PWR] again to turn the phone OFF.

Power On Greeting

Each time you turn your phone ON, it performs a self-test to let you know
your phone is operational.  When the self-test is finished, the display
reads "on" and you're ready to go.

IMPORTANT:  Your M70 phone will also display network related messages when
            it's first powered ON.  For example, your Service Provider may
            broadcast their name in your phone's display.  If you don't
            see the name of your Service Provider, then you'll see
            "Home System" when inside your local coverage area or
            "Public Roam" when outside your local coverage area.

Standby Mode

To conserve energy, your phone will turn OFF its lights when you haven't
touched a key for a few seconds.  Don't worry, the display will come back
when you press a key or open the phone's keypad cover.

Low Temperature Use

The liquid crystal display screen used on your phone behaves differently
at extremely low temperatures.  You may notice that the display responds
slowly to key presses.  This is normal and does not affect the operation
of the phone in any way.

Using the Smart Button

The Smart Button's central location -- the middle key on the left side
-- makes it easy to feel, easy to find, and easy to use.

The (crosshairs and square symbol) in your display represents the Smart
Button and it is signified in this document by [Smart Button].

The Smart Button

One press of the Smart Button with your thumb and you can:

Open the Name Directory

Press [Smart Button] and your name directory is open on the display!

Enter the Menu System

Simply press [FCN] first then press [Smart Button] to access the M70's
menu.

Select Items in the Display

The most basic use of the Smart Button is to select.  Whenever the phone
offers you a choice, press [Smart Button] to select the setting you want.

Toggle Features ON and OFF

Press [Smart Button] to toggle features with two settings.

Place Calls

Press & hold [Smart Button] to place a call to the number on the display.

You will see:  "Dialing 312551234".

End Calls

To end a call with the Smart Button:

1.  Press & hold [Smart Button] until you hear two tones.  You will see:
    "(Smart Button Symbol) To End Call".

2.  Press [Smart Button] again to end a call.

Reading the Indicators

Signal Strength Indicator -- (Antenna with Arcs) plus 0-5 Strength Bars

  Indicates the strength of the connection between your phone and the
  local cellular system.  A strong signal increases your chances of
  placing and receiving calls.  You may see low signal strength if you're
  in a fringe area of the cellular system.  Building, tunnels, and bad
  weather could block or interfere with reception.  The Strength Bars show
  increasing signal strength.

Digital Channel Indicator -- "[D]"

  Displayed when you are in a digital coverage area.

Analog Channel Indicator -- "[A]"

  Displayed when you are in an analog coverage area.

In Use Indicator -- "IU"

  Displayed when a call is in progress.

Roam Indicator -- "Rm"

  Displayed when your phone access a cellular service outside your local
  cellular system.  When you leave your home cellular service area, your
  phone roams or seeks another cellular system until it finds one.

  If your phone finds another cellular service of the same system type as
  your home service, the Roam Indicator appears.  If your phone finds a
  different system type, it will flash.

No Service Indicator -- "NS"

  Displayed when calls cannot be placed or received from your location
  because you are beyond the range of a cellular system.

Battery Level Indicator -- (Battery Symbol)

  The Battery Level Indicator shows the amount of charge remaining in your
  battery.  A solid indicator means you battery is fully charged.  When
  your battery is low, the phone alerts you in three ways:

    The indicator will appear empty.

    "Low Battry" will appear on your screen.

    A short tone will play periodically.

  If you ignore warnings, the phone will automatically turn itself OFF
  when the battery charge is exhausted.  Just charge the battery to resume
  normal operation.

  For a more detailed battery level reading:

    Press [FCN] then press [4].  
    You will see:  "Batt" and (0-6 Strength Bars)

Placing and Ending Calls

First check that your phone is ON.

To place a call:

1.  Extend the antenna completely for best performance.

2.  Enter the number you want to call.  For example: 1-312-555-1234.

    Press [CLR] to erase one digit at a time if you make a mistake.

    Press & hold [CLR] to clear then entire entry.

3.  Press & hold [Smart Button] until you hear two tones.

       or

    Press [SEND] to place the call.  You will see: "Dialing 3125551234."

    Tip:  You can use the [Smart Button] instead of [SEND].

To end a call:

Press [END] or close the keypad cover to hang up your M70.

    or

Press & hold [Smart Button] until you hear two tones.

You will see: "(Smart Button Symbol) To End Call".

    then

Press [Smart Button] again to end the call.

You can dial phone numbers with up to 32 digits, but only the last 20
digits will appear in the display.

Press [RCL] to see the entire phone number.

The phone will take you to the beginning of the phone number, then will
flash the remaining digits.

Receiving Calls

Your phone must be ON to receive calls.

To answer a call:

1.  Extend the antenna completely for best performance.

2.  Press [SEND] or open the keypad cover when the phone rings.

    Tip:  To make answering calls even easier, try the Multiple Key Answer
          feature in Faxback Doc. # 48748.

To end a call:

Press [END] or close the keypad cover to hang up.

    or

Press & hold [Smart Button] until you hear two tones.  You will see: 
"(Smart Button Symbol) To End Call".

    then

Press [Smart Button] again to end the call.

Unanswered Call Indicator

When you're not available to take a call, your M70 keeps a count of your
unanswered calls.  Your phone will alert you with the message "Call XX",
where "XX" is the number of calls not answered.  If your telephone is ON
and you choose not to answer a call, your display will show:

    Call XX

Press [CLR] to clear the display, and you can begin placing calls again.

Redialing Numbers

Automatic Redial

Sometimes the cellular system is busy and you may hear a fast busy signal.
With Automatic Redial, your phone will call continuously for the next four
minutes.  When it makes a connection, the phone will ring.  When the
person you are calling answers, you can begin talking.

Press [Smart Button] or press [SEND] if you hear a fast busy signal.  You
will see:  "Redial".

If the call does not go through after four minutes:

Press [Smart Button] or press [SEND] to continue the call attempt.

If you hear an ordinary busy signal, try this sequence.

1.  Press [END] to hang up.

2.  Press & hold [Smart Button] or press [SEND] to redial the busy number.
    You will see:  "Dialing 3125551234".

Display Last Ten Numbers Dialed

This features makes it easy to call any one of the last ten numbers you've
dialed.

1.  Press [RCL] then press [0], [0].  The display will show the last
    number dialed.

2.  Press [Smart Button] to scroll through the last ten numbers, starting
    with the most recent call.

3.  Press & hold [Smart Button] or press [SEND] to call the number in your
    display.  You will see:  "Dialing 3125551234".

Viewing Your Own Number

To find out the number currently active on your phone:

Press [RCL] then press [#>].

Basic Tone Controls

Adjusting Volume

You can use the upper and lower volume keys to adjust both the earpiece
and the ringer volume.  The phone's speaker will demonstrate the new
volume level as you adjust!

To adjust earpiece and keypad volume:

Press [Volume Up] or [Volume Down] to raise or lower the volume.

To adjust ringer volume:

1.  Press [FCN].

2.  Press [Volume Up] or [Volume Down] to raise or lower the ringer
    volume.

Muting the Microphone

If you need some privacy while a call is in progress, try muting the
microphone - you will be able to hear the person on the other end, but he
or she will not hear you.

1.  Press [FCN] then press [6] to mute the microphone.  
    You will see: "Mute".

2.  Press [FCN] then press [6] again to resume normal conversation.
