Qualcomm QCP-820 Cellular Phone
(170-1219) Operation Faxback Doc. # 47377
BASIC FUNCTIONS
MAKING A CALL
First, check that your phone is on. Remember our little friends, the
display indicators? Well, they should be visible on the screen. The most
basic way to make a call is:
1. Enter the phone number.
2. Press [SEND] or press the dial-shutter in twice. If the phone is
locked, the number is restricted, or there is another problem, you
will see a help message.
3. Press [END] to disconnect the call.
You can also make calls from phone book memory (see below) or from your
recent calls list (see Faxback Doc. # 47378).
CORRECTING DIALING MISTAKES
Press [CLR] to erase a digit at a time. Press and hold [CLR] for at least
one second to delete all digits or letters. You have now corrected the
error of your ways.
GETTING YOUR OWN PHONE NUMBER
For those of you who've activated your phone and don't know the number,
and you people know who you are, you can display the phone's number by
doing the following:
1. Select "FEATURES."
2. Scroll and select "DIRECTORY."
3. Scroll and select "MY NUMBER."
Note: If the short features menu is active (see Faxback Doc. # 47379),
then simply select "FEATURES" and then select "MY NUMBER" to get
your phone's number.
KEYGUARD FEATURE
You can lock the keypad in order to avoid accidental keypresses. (A novel
feature for owners of small children.) However, you'll still receive
incoming calls and messages. This feature can only be used when a call is
not in progress.
1. Press and hold down the dial-shuttle until you see the message that
the keypad is guarded.
2. To unlock, press "1 2 3."
Note: If you're receiving a call then pressing [SEND] or "123" will
answer the call and unlock the keypad.
RECEIVING CALLS
Okay, we have to say this: Your phone must be on to receive calls.
1. Press [SEND] (unless the anykey answer feature is on, see Faxback Doc.
# 47379) to answer.
To disconnect the call:
1. Now, pay close attention here. Press [END].

may hear two beeps indicating another incoming call.

2. Press [SEND] again to toggle between the two callers.
Three-way calling
Your service provider may offer three-way calling.

for more instructions.
REDIALING CALLS
Redialing your last outgoing call.
1. Press [SEND] to redial the last outgoing call.
Redialing from the recent calls list
You can redial any of the last ten different phone numbers through the
recent calls list (see Faxback Doc. # 47378).
ADJUSTING VOLUME
Turning the dial-shuttle will adjust the earpiece volume when you're on a
call.
When the phone is ringing, turning the dial shuttle will adjust the ringer
volume.
The ringer, keybeep, and earpiece volumes can be adjusted using the
"SOUNDS" menu.
EMERGENCY DIALING
You can place calls to 911 or one of the other three emergency numbers
that are in your emergency number list even if your phone is locked.
The service provider may have preprogrammed the three emergency numbers
for you. As long as you are receiving a signal (meaning the [Antenna
symbol] indicator is visible), these numbers can be dialed by the phone.
Making emergency calls
1. Press [9 WXYZ][1][1] or one of the other three emergency numbers.
2. Press [SEND].
Saving and editing emergency numbers
You can save three other phone numbers (in addition to 911) that can be
dialed even if the phone has been locked. To save these phone numbers:
1. Select "FEATURES."
2. Scroll and select "SECURITY."
3. Enter the lock code. Typically, the lock code is initially set to
either 0000 or the last 4 digit of your phone number.
4. Scroll and select "EMERGENCY #."
5. Select "EDIT" to edit/enter emergency number 1 or scroll to other
emergency numbers.
6. Select "SAVE" to save the entered number.
SIGNAL STRENGTH
Call quality depends on signal strength in your area. The phone displays
the current strength as a number of bars next to the signal strength icon;
the more bars, the better the signal.
If the signal is poor, raise the antenna. If you're in a building, the
reception may be better near a window.
POWER SAVE MODE
The power save mode feature will automatically turn on if the phone hasn't
been able to acquire any system after 15 minutes of searching. While this
feature is active, the phone's battery charge is conserved. The phone will
automatically recheck for service periodically. To manually force the
phone to recheck for service, press any key. A message on the display will
let you know when the phone is operating in power save mode.
SHORT OR LONG FEATURES MENU
The phone offers the choice between the use of an extensive long
"FEATURES" menu or a brief Short "FEATURES" menu. The long menu allows
you to view and change all of the feature settings of the phone. The
short menu provides access to just a few often-used features. It's
likely that you'll only need the short menu after you personalize and
fully set up your phone. See Faxback Doc. # 47379 for more information.
Note: The instructions in this guide are based around the Long "FEATURES"
menu structure.
