SP-511 25-Channel Cordless Telephone
(430-5511) Operation Faxback Doc. # 44303

Operating Range

This cordless telephone operates at the maximum power allowed by the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC). Even so, the handset and base can
communicate over only a certain distance - which can vary with the
locations of the base and handset, the weather, and the construction of your
home or office.

If the handset is moved to a point where the base and handset can no longer
communicate, the handset will sound two short beeps when you make a call,
indicating that you are out of range. Move closer to the base to restore
normal operation.

If you receive a call while you are out of range, the handset might not
ring - or if it does ring, the call might not connect when you press PHONE.
Move closer to the base, then press PHONE to answer a call.

If you move out of range during a phone conversation, you will hear noise
or interference. To improve reception, move closer to the base.

If you move out of range while on a call, the phone might disconnect but
will be left "off the hook." To hang up properly, walk back into range,
periodically pressing PHONE until the PHONE light turns off.

Changing Channels

This cordless telephone has an advanced feature that minimizes the chance
of interference on its 25 channels.

In the unlikely event that you notice noise or interference while using the
handset, be sure the antenna on the base is raised to a vertical position,
and:

1. Press CHANNEL.

2. If the interference does not clear, continue to press CHANNEL until you
find a clear channel (your call will not be interrupted)
    -OR-
Move closer to the base and press CHANNEL	.

Note: You must be in range to change channels.

Making A Call

1. Press PHONE, and wait for the PHONE light to light steadily.

2. When you hear a dial tone, dial the number.

Answering A Call

NOTE: Although ringing stops when you answer, you might not be able to hear
the other party until the PHONE light turns on steadily.

If this phone is ringing and the handset is in the base, lift the handset.
The PHONE light turns on.

NOTE: If RINGER is set to OFF, press PHONE to answer the call.

If the handset is not on the base, press PHONE. The PHONE light turns on.

Ending A Call

To end a call, place the handset on the base or press PHONE.

Redial

The last number dialed (up to 16 digits) is stored in redial memory until
you dial another number. To redial that number:

1. Press PHONE, and wait for the PHONE light to turn on.

2. When you hear a dial tone, press REDIAL.

Handset Volume

You can set the handset volume to three different levels. Each time you
press VOL, the level changes.

Temporary Tone Service

NOTE: If you have touch-tone service, you do not need to use the Temporary
       Tone Service feature.

If you have dial pulse (rotary) service, this feature allows you to enter
the codes or tones needed to operate answering machines, or use electronic
banking services, calling cards, and other special services. This feature
will operate most special services; however, some services may actually
require a touch-tone line. To be sure, ask the company that provides the
special service. Dial the call, then press TONE*. Any buttons pressed
after this send tone signals.

After you hang up, the phone automatically returns to dial pulse (rotary)
dialing.

Page/Handset Locator

This feature is useful if you misplace the handset or if you would like to
signal someone at the handset's location.

To use this feature: Make sure the IN USE light is not lit on the base,
then press and hold PAGE/LOCATOR on the base for
about four seconds. A repeating paging tone sounds on
                      the handset.

To cancel this feature: Press CHANNEL on the handset or PAGE/LOCATOR on
                         the base.

NOTE: The paging tone will stop in about three minutes if you haven't
       cancelled it before then.

Hold

Press HOLD to put a call on hold. To return to the call, press HOLD or
PHONE, or lift the handset of an extension phone on the same line.

Mute

Mute allows you to hear your caller, but prevents the caller from hearing
you.

While on a call:

Press MUTE. The MUTE light turns on.

To continue your conversation:

Press MUTE again. The MUTE light turns off.

Flash

Press FLASH to activate custom-calling services such as Call Waiting or
Three-Way Calling. You may have to press other buttons before or after
FLASH as explained in any custom-calling instructions provided by your
local telephone service company.

MEMORY

This cordless phone can store 10 telephone numbers in memory that you can
dial by just pressing PROG/MEM and one of the number buttons. The phone
numbers you store in memory are protected from loss when you change the
handset battery pack, or in the event of a power failure.

Storing Speed Dialing Numbers

1. Make sure the PHONE light is turned OFF.

2. Press PROG/MEM.

3. Enter the phone number (up to 16 digits) you want to store.

4. Press PROG/MEM.

5. Press any number button from 0 to 9 for the memory location where you
want to store the number. A three-part tone confirms that the number
was stored properly. If you hear a long buzzing tone, or nothing
at all, press PHONE, then repeat these steps to store the number.

For example, to store 555-1234 in memory location 9:

Press PROG/MEM 5 5 5 1 2 3 4 PROG/MEM 9.

Dialing Speed-Dial Numbers

1. Press PHONE and wait for a dial tone.

2. Press PROG/MEM.

3. Press the number button (0-9) of the memory number you want to call.

For example, to dial the number stored in location 9, press PHONE PROG/MEM
9.

Storing Numbers Just Dialed

After you make a telephone call, you can store the number you dialed in
memory. Follow the steps in "Storing Speed Dialing Numbers," except press
REDIAL instead of entering the telephone number in step 3.

Replacing a Stored Number

You can replace a stored number simply by storing a new number in its place.

Directory Label

Use the supplied directory label to keep a record of the names or telephone
numbers you store in memory locations. You can place this label on the
handset or the base.

Storing a Pause in a Memory Dial Number

If you have to dial an access number (usually 9) to get an outside line,
you can store the access number and a pause in the dialing sequence. The
pause allows enough time to get an outside line dial tone.

To insert a pause in a stored number:

When storing a number in memory, press and hold the number button that
comes before the pause, until you hear a second beep. This inserts a 1.5
second pause after that digit. If you hold the number button down longer,
you will hear more beeps as additional pauses are stored.

NOTE: Each pause you store is counted as one digit.

For example, to store 9, PAUSE, 555-1234 in memory location 3.

Press PROG/MEM, hold 9 for 2 seconds until you hear a second beep, then
press 5 5 5 1 2 3 4 PROG/MEM 3.

USING THE BATTERY PACK

Installing the Handset Battery Pack

1. Remove the battery cover on the handset by pressing on the indentation
    and sliding the cover downward.

2. If you are replacing the battery pack, lift out the old one and unplug
    it from the handset jack.

3. Hold the new battery pack and plug the connector into the handset jack.
Place the battery pack into the cases so the wires rest below the
    battery pack.

4. Replace the cover by sliding it on its track up over the battery case
until it snaps firmly into place.

5. New batteries must be charged before using the phone. Place the handset
face down on the base and allow it to charge for four hours. The
telephone might operate before that, but for the best performance, let
the handset battery pack fully charge.

CAUTION: To reduce the risk of fire or injury to persons or damage to the
telephone, read and follow these instructions carefully.

Do not dispose of the battery in a fire. The cell might explode.

Do not open, puncture, or mutilate the battery. Released electrolyte is
corrosive and might cause damage to the eyes or skin. It might be toxic
if swallowed.

Charging the Handset Battery Pack

The battery pack needs charging when:

The phone beeps four times when you press PHONE.

The LOW BATTERY light on the handset flashes on and off.

The phone does not respond when you press PHONE, and no lights turn on.

Place the handset on the base so the CHARGING light turns on. The battery
pack will fully discharge in four hours.

NOTE: The handset must lie flat on the base, with the keypad facing down,
       when charging.

If it's more convenient for you, you can leave the handset on the base all
the time. It is impossible to overcharge the batteries. If you get a low
battery indicator, even after four hours of charging, the battery pack
should be replaced with another 3.6V, 270 mAh battery pack (available at
your local RadioShack store.)

Battery Saver Control Feature

If you set RINGER on the side of the handset to OFF to prevent the handset
from ringing, the handset can stay ready to use for up to 21 days before
you have to return it to the base for recharging. You can still use the
handset to make a call or to answer a call if you hear an extension phone
ringing.

When RINGER is set to ON, the handset can stay ready to use for up to 14
days.
