ET-505 Cordless Telephone
(430-1008) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 39569

SELECTING A LOCATION

You can place the phone on a flat surface such as a desk, shelf, or table,
mount it on a wall plate, or mount it directly on the wall. Select a
location where the phone is:

     Near an AC outlet

Near a modular phone line jack

Out of the way of normal activities

Away from electrical machinery, electrical appliances, and metal walls
     or filing cabinets

Away from wireless intercoms, security alarms, and room monitors

The base's location affects the phone's range. If you have a choice of
several locations, try each to see which one provides the best performance.

Your phone connects directly to a modular phone line jack. If your
telephone wiring does not have a modular jack, you can:

Update the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters available at your
     local Radio Shack store.

Have the phone company update the wiring for you.

Note: The phone company charges to install the necessary jack.

The USOC number of the jack to be installed is RJ11C for a baseboard jack
and RJ11W for a wall-plate jack.

INSTALLING THE BATTERY

To make it easier for you, the ET-505 now comes with the battery already
installed. Simply follow these steps to connect the battery, then charge
it before you use the phone.

1. Push down on the handset's battery compartment cover, then slide it
    off.

2. Insert the battery connector's plug into the jack in the battery
compartment. The plug fits only one way. Be sure to insert it with
    the tab up.

3. Replace the battery compartment cover.

Notes:

If the LOW BATT indicator lights, recharge the battery. (If battery
power is too low, LOW BATT might not light.)

If you have trouble replacing the battery when it will no longer hold
a charge, take the phone to your local Radio Shack store for
     assistance.

When you install the battery that comes with the phone, or any new battery,
you must charge the battery for about 24 hours before you use the phone.
When you finish installing the phone, charge the battery by placing the
handset in the base for the required time.

MOUNTING THE BASE

Once you select a location for the base, follow the appropriate mounting
instructions.

On a Desk Top

Follow these steps if you want to place the base on a desk, shelf, or
table.

1. Plug the modular cord into a modular phone line jack.

2. Insert the AC adapter's barrel plug into the DC 12V jack on the back of
    the base.

3. Thread the supplied AC adapter's cord through the strain relief slot
    under the base.

4. Plug the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet.

5. Place the handset on the base.

On a Wall Plate

Follow these steps to mount the base on a standard wall plate. A selection
of wall plates is available at your local Radio Shack store.

1. Connect the supplied adapter plate to the phone's base (see
    "Installing/Removing the Adapter Plate").

2. Wind all but the last 8 inches of modular cord clockwise around the
adapter plate, then feed the remaining excess cord through the retainer
channel on the adapter plate. Insert the end of the cord into the
    phone's modular plug slot.

3. Plug the modular cord into the wall plate's modular phone line jack.

4. Insert the AC adapter's barrel plug into the DC 12V jack on the back of
    the base.

5. Thread the supplied AC adapter's cord through the strain relief slot
    under the base.

6. Align the holes on the adapter plate with the mounting studs on the
wall plate, then carefully push the base onto the mounting studs and
slide it down on the wall plate.

7. Slide out the handset holder on the base, turn it 180 degrees, then
slide it back onto the base.

8. Hang the handset on the base.

9. Plug the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet.

Directly on the Wall

You need two screws (not supplied) with heads that fit into the holes on
the bottom of the supplied adapter plate.

1. Using a ruler, mark the positions for both screw holes 3 15/16 inches
    apart.

2. In both marked locations, drill a hole slightly smaller then the
    screws.

Caution: Be careful not to drill into any objects behind the wall.

3. Insert the screws into the wall, letting each head extend 1/8-inch from
    the wall.

4. Connect the supplied adapter plate to the phone's base (see
    "Installing/Removing the Adapter Plate").

5. Follow Steps 3-5 under "On a Wall Plate."

6. Align the holes under the base with the screw heads in the wall, then
carefully push the base onto the screw heads and slide it down.

7. Slide out the handset holder on the base, turn it 180 degrees, then
slide it back onto the base.

8. Hang the handset on the base.

9. Plug the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet.

Installing/Removing the Adapter Plate

If you are installing the phone on a wall plate or directly on the wall,
follow these steps to connect the supplied adapter plate to the phone's
base.

1. Turn the base over with the antenna closest to you.

2. Hold the adapter plate above the base at an angle so both sets of tabs
on the adapter plate point down and the spring tabs are on top.

3. Insert the adapter plate's squared tabs into both holes at the left of
the base, then lay the adapter plate down on the base.

4. While pressing and holding in both spring tabs, snap the adapter plate
down onto the base until it locks.

5. To remove the adapter plate from the base, while pressing and holding
in both spring tabs, gently pull the bottom end of the adapter plate up
    and lift off the plate.

CHARGING THE BATTERY

When you install a new battery, you must charge the battery for about 24
hours before you use the phone. You must also recharge the battery when
the LOW BATT indicator flashes.

The battery automatically charges when you place the handset in the base.

To recharge the battery pack, return the handset to the base for 10 to 14
hours.

Notes:

If the battery power is low and the handset is in use, the handset
beeps every 3 seconds. If this happens, immediately disconnect the
call (or use an extension phone) and recharge the battery.

If the battery is low and the handset is not in use, LOW BATT slowly
flashes. If the battery is too low, LOW BATT does not light at all.
If this happens, immediately disconnect the call (or use another
extension phone) and recharge the battery.

Periodically clean the charging contacts on the handset and base with
     a pencil eraser.

If the CHARGE indicator does not light when you place the handset on
the base, be sure the battery and AC adapter are correctly and
     securely connected.

About once a month, fully discharge the battery. Otherwise, the battery
loses its ability to fully recharge. To fully discharge the battery, keep
the handset off the base until the LOW BATT indicator lights. Then return
the handset to the base and fully recharge the battery.

Note: Some deeply discharged batteries take longer to charge. If
overnight charging is not sufficient, try charging for up to 48
       hours.

SETTING THE DIALING MODE

Set MODE (PULSE/TONE) for the type of service you have, pulse (rotary) or
tone. If you are not sure which type you have, do this test.

1. Set MODE (PULSE/TONE) to TONE.

2. Lift the handset or press TALK/HANG UP and listen for a dial tone.

3. Press any number other than 0.

If the dial tone stops, you have touch-tone service. Leave MODE (PULSE/
TONE) set to TONE.

If the dial tone continues, you have pulse service. Set MODE (PULSE/TONE)
to PULSE.

SETTING THE HANDSET VOLUME

Adjust VOLUME to control the volume of the sound you hear through the
handset.
