Sending DTMF Tones

Dual Tone Multi Frequency tones allow you to communicate with answering
machines and computerized telephony systems, etc. using your cellular phone.
You can transmit numerical information as a series of tones by using the
DTMF facility (e.g. to play back messages from your answering machine).
DTMF tones can be transmitted even when the keypad tones are set off.

There are two alternative ways to send DTMF tones:

1. Manual Transmission

    A. Make a call to the desired number in the usual way.

    B. Enter the digits you want to be sent as DTMF tones (0-9 or # and *
characters). The digits are sent one by one to the network. The
length of a tone depends on how long you press the key.

2. Automatic Transmission

You can send a string of digits as DTMF tones by storing the string in the
phone directory memory location and then recalling it for automatic DTMF
transmission.

    A. Make a call to the desired number in the usual way.

    B. Recall the string of digits (e.g. the password of your answering
machine) to be sent as DTMF tones from the memory location where it
has been stored through the corresponding menu function (see the
section Recalling Names and Phone Numbers from Memory).

NOTE: Do not recall a phone number by entering the location number and
then pressing the /\ \/ key, because the location number will then
be sent as DTMF tones (e.g. the phone will continue to send manual
       DTMF transmissions).

    C. Press first the MENU key and then the SEND key.

The number displayed is sent to the network. A series of tones each repre-senting a digit of the DTMF number will be heard as the phone transmits the
sequence. If the keypad tones have been set off, the DTMF tones will be
sent, but you will not hear them.

Once the DTMF string has been transmitted, the phone returns to the normal
call mode.

If you have not pressed the SEND key and you decide not to send the DTMF
string, press and hold the CLR key to return to the normal call mode.

    D. To end the call, press the END key.

Storing Pause and Wait Characters between DTMF Digit Strings

If the device to which you are sending the DTMF string, needs to receive
the number slowly or after a pause, insert one or more pause characters of
2.5 seconds between the required DTMF digits.

The pause character is displayed as a lower case 'p'. To create a pause
character (p), press first the MENU key and then the # key. (For example,
if you want to send your password as DTMF tones with a 'p' character
between each digit, the string should be sent as 1p2p3p4.)

If you wish, you can store the DTMF string within the same memory location
as the access phone number by inserting a wait character between the tele-
phone number and the DTMF number.

The wait character is displayed as a lower case 'w'. To create a wait
character (w), press the MENU key once and then the # key twice.

When storing a string of digits including the access phone number and DTMF
string, first enter the phone number with a wait character inserted before
entering the digit string to be sent as DTMF tones.

To send a DTMF sequence which contains wait characters:

1. Recall the memory location containing the phone number and DTMF string.

2. Press the SEND key to dial the phone number. The phone number will then
    disappear from the display.

3. When it is time to send the DTMF string, press the SEND key or press
first the MENU key and then the SEND key.

4. After the DTMF transmission is completed, end the call by pressing the
    END key.

NOTE: You can test the DTMF functions without transmitting actual DTMF
strings by following the above procedure without actually making
           the call.

Call Waiting

Your cellular service provider may offer a call waiting option. This net-
work feature allows you to make or answer a second call while you already
have a call in progress.

To initiate a call while you have a call in progress:

1. Enter the phone number or recall the number from the memory and press
    the SEND key.

To answer an incoming call while you have a call in progress:

1. Press the SEND key when you hear an incoming call alert (normally indi-
    cated by a beep).

NOTE: The Call Waiting network feature normally needs to be specifically
subscribed to with your local cellular service provider. This net-
work feature may not be available in all cellular service provider
       networks.

Please contact your local cellular service provider for more information.
