ET-441 Cordless Electronic Telephone
(430-0573) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 34270

READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLATION

We have designed your telephone to conform to federal regulations, and you
can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each device that you
connect to the phone line draws power from the phone line. This power draw
is the device's ringer equivalence number, or REN. The REN is shown on the
bottom of your phone.

If you are using more than one phone or other device on the line, add up
all the RENs. If the total is more than five, your phones might not ring.
In rural areas, a total REN of three might impair ringer operation.

FCC STATEMENT

This telephone complies with Part 68 of FCC Rules. You must, upon request,
provide the FCC registration number and the REN to your phone company. Both
numbers are on the bottom of your phone.

NOTE: Your phone operates on standard radio frequencies, as allocated by
the FCC. It is possible for other radio units operating nearby on
similar frequencies to unintentionally intercept your conversation
or cause interference. This possible lack of privacy can occur with
       any cordless phone.

NOTE: You must not connect your phone to any of the following:

       Coin-operated systems

       Party-line systems

       Most electronic key phone systems

For your important records, we urge you to record your phone's serial
numbers in the space below. The serial numbers are on the top of the
handset and on the bottom panel of the base.

INSTALLATION

Selecting a Location

The base's location affects the telephone's range. If you have a choice of
several locations, try each to see which location gives the best perform-
ance.

Select a location that is all of the following:

    Near an AC outlet

    Near a telephone jack

Out of the way of normal activities

Away from electrical machinery, electrical appliances, and metal walls
    or filing cabinets

Away from wireless intercoms, alarms, and room monitors

INSTALLING THE BASE

To install the base, do the following:

1. Plug one end of the supplied modular cord into the TEL LINE jack on the
    back of the base.

2. Plug the cord's other end into a modular phone line jack.

3. Insert the supplied AC adapter's barrel plug into the AC IN jack on the
    back of the base.

4. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. The charge indicator
flashes to indicate the security code is not yet set.

If the phone jack is not a modular jack, you must update the wiring. You
can convert the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters available at your
local Radio Shack store. Or, you can let the phone company update the
wiring.

NOTE: The telephone company will charge you for the installation of the
necessary jack. The phone company will ask for the USOC number of
the jack to be installed. This number is RJ11C.

INSTALLING THE BATTERY

Follow these steps to install the supplied battery into the handset. Then
charge the battery as described under "Charging the Battery", below.

NOTE: The supplied battery should last for several years. When the
battery does not fully recharge, order a new one from your local
       Radio Shack store.

1. Loosen the screw on the battery compartment and slide it in the
    direction of the arrow.

2. Attach the battery's connector to the connector inside the battery
compartment. Then place the battery inside the compartment.

3. Replace the battery compartment cover and tighten the screw.

CHARGING THE BATTERY

You must charge a new battery for at least 24 hours before you use the
phone. Also, recharge the battery when the handset beeps every 30 seconds
or TALK/BATT LOW flashes.

To charge or recharge the battery, place the handset on the cradle. CHARGE
lights.

NOTES: The first time you power the phone, or if the handset's battery
becomes completely discharged, CHARGE flashes when you place the
handset on the cradle. This indicates the security code has not yet
been set or has been lost. CHARGE stops flashing about 3 minutes
after you place the handset on the cradle.

If CHARGE does not stay lit when you place the handset on the
cradle be sure the battery and AC adapter are properly connected.

Also, check the charging contacts on the handset and base. If the
contacts are dirty or tarnished, clean them with a pencil eraser.

A full charge lasts about 2 days if you do not use the phone. Be
sure to return the handset to the base when you see TALK/BATT LOW
        flash.

After the first charging, you should recharge the handset's battery
2 hours for every 1 hour of use.

About once a month, fully discharge the battery. Otherwise, the
battery loses its ability to fully recharge, and you have to re-
charge and replace it more often.

To fully discharge the battery, keep the handset off the cradle
until TALK/BATT LOW flashes. Then return the handset to the cradle
        and fully recharge the battery.

This product contains a rechargeable Nickel Cadmium battery. At the end of
the battery's useful life, it must be recycled or disposed of properly.
Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities
for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some
options that might be available are; municipal curb-side collection, drop
off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-back
programs.

SETTING THE DIALING MODE

Set TONE/PULSE for the type of service you have. If you are not sure which
type of service you have, do this test.

1. Set TONE/PULSE to TONE.

2. Lift the handset and listen for a dial tone.

3. Press any number other than 0.

NOTE: If your phone system requires that you dial an access code (9,
for example) before you dial an outside number, do not press 0
           or the access code.

If the dial tone stops, you have touch-tone service.

If the dial tone continues, you have pulse service. Set TONE/PULSE to
PULSE and return the handset to the cradle. The next time you make a call,
the phone uses pulse dialing.

If you have pulse service, you can still use touch tones to use special
services such as bank-by-phone. See "Using Touch-Tone Service on a Pulse
Line", on Faxback Doc. # 34271.

SETTING THE RINGER VOLUME

Your telephone has two ringer volume levels. To switch between the two
levels, remove the handset from the base and press TALK so the TALK/HANG UP
LOW BATT indicator is off. Then press FLASH/RINGER to switch between the
two ringer levels. The phone sounds the ring each time you press FLASH/
RINGER.
