(430-0692) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 31561

Complete the procedures in this section before you use your telephone.

SETTING THE PULSE/TONE SWITCH

Set PULSE/TONE on the side of the base for the type of service you have -
pulse (rotary) or tone. If you are not sure which type you have, do this
test.

1. Set PULSE/TONE to TONE.

2. Pick up the handset and press LINE 1 or LINE 2, and listen for a dial
    tone.

3. Press any number other than 0.

NOTE: If your phone system requires that you dial an access code (9,
for example) before you dial an outside number, do not enter the
          access code either.

If the dial tone stops, you have touch-tone service on that line,
if the dial tone continues, you have pulse service.

4. Repeat Steps 2-3 to check the type of service on the other line.

If either line has pulse service, set PULSE/TONE to PULSE.

SETTING THE VOLUME

Base/Speakerphone Volume:

Repeatedly press VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN on the front of the base to
adjust the volume of the sound you hear through the base. To quickly
adjust the volume, press and hold down VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN.

Handset Receiver Volume:

Repeatedly press UP and DOWN on the side of the handset to adjust the
volume of the sound you hear through the handset. To quickly adjust the
volume, press and hold down UP and DOWN.

TURNING THE BASE'S RINGERS ON OR OFF

You can turn the base's ringer on or off for each line.

When you do not want the base to ring for a particular line, set that
line's RINGER switch on the side of the base to OFF. You can still make
calls, and you can answer a call if you hear the handset or another phone
on the same line ring.

NOTES: You can also turn the handset's ringer on or off and adjust the
ringer on or off and adjust the ringer tones for each line. See
        "Operation" (Faxback Doc. # 31560).

If you press OFF on the handset while the phone is ringing, both
the handset's and the base's ringer turns off for that call only.
If the next call comes in more than 5 seconds later, both ringers
         automatically turn back on.
