ET-509 Cordless Telephone
(430-1017) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 19240

SELECTING A LOCATION

You can place the base on a desk, shelf, or table. Select a location that
meets the following requirements:

    Near an AC outlet.

    Near a telephone line jack.

Out of the way of normal activities.

Away from electrical machinery, electrical appliances, and metal walls
    or filing cabinets.

Away from wireless intercoms, alarms, and room monitors.

The base's location affects the phone’s range. If you have a choice of
several locations, try each to see which provides the best performance.

If the phone line jack is not a modular jack, you must update the wiring.
You can convert the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters available
at your local Radio Shack store. Or, you can let the phone company update
the wiring for you.

NOTES: The phone company will charge you for installing the jack.

The USOC number of the jack to be installed is RJ11C for a
        baseboard jack.

SETTING UP THE PHONE

1. Plug the modular cord’s end into a modular phone line jack.

2. Insert the supplied AC adapter’s barrel plug into the 9V DC jack on
the back of the base. Thread the AC power supply cord through the
strain relief slot on the bottom of the base.

3. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet.

CONNECTING THE BATTERY

IMPORTANT: You must connect the battery inside the handset before charging
the phone and using it. Follow these steps to connect the
            battery.

1. Press down on the battery compartment cover and slide it off to remove
    it.

2. Plug the battery wire connector into the connector socket inside the
    compartment.

NOTE: The connector fits only one way.

3. Replace the cover.

CHARGING THE BATTERY

A new battery in the handset must be fully charged before you use the
telephone. To charge the battery the first time, simply set RINGER OFF/ON
to OFF then place the handset on the base. The CHARGE LED on the base
lights, indicating that the battery is charging. Full charging takes about
15 hours.

After the initial charge, to maintain adequate power, recharge the battery
at least every few days by returning the handset to the base. The handset
beeps when the battery is low and needs to be recharged.

NOTES: When the battery gets low, the handset beeps every 3 seconds for
about 30 seconds, then the phone stops operating. If battery power
becomes low while you are using the telephone, you are disconnected
after about 30 seconds. Recharge the battery.

Periodically clean the charging contacts on the handset and base
        with a soft cloth.

About once a month, fully discharge the battery. Otherwise, the
battery loses its ability to fully recharge.

REPLACING THE BATTERY

If the handset battery will not hold a charge for more than a couple of
hours even after an overnight charge, it must be replaced. Order a
replacement battery through your local Radio Shack store.

Follow these steps to replace the battery.

1. Be sure RINGER OFF/ON is set to OFF.

2. Press down on the handset’s battery compartment cover and slide it off.

3. Remove the battery strap.

4. Gently pull the battery wires until the wire connector comes out from
    the socket.

5. Remove the old battery.

6. Insert and connect a new battery.

7. Replace the strap.

8. Replace the cover.

9. Charge the handset for 15 hours or more before using the phone.

NOTE: The phone contains a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery. At the
end of the battery’s useful life, it must be recycled or disposed of
properly. Contact your local, country, or state hazardous waste
management authorities for information on recycling or disposal
programs in your area. Some options that might be available are:
municipal curb-side collection, drop-off boxes at retailers,
recycling collection centers, and mail-back programs.

SETTING TONE/PULSE

Set TONE/PULSE for the type of service you have. If you are not sure which
type you have, do this test.

1. Set TONE/PULSE to TONE.

2. Lift the handset, press TALK, and listen for a dial tone.

3. Press any number other than 0.

If the dial tone stops, you have touch-tone service. Leave TONE/PULSE set
to TONE. If it continues, you have pulse service. Set TONE/PULSE to PULSE.

SETTING RINGER OFF/ON

RINGER OFF/ON controls your cordless phone’s ringer. The phone does not
ring when it is set to OFF.

To extend battery life, slide RINGER OFF/ON to OFF. This battery saving
feature is most convenient when an extension phone is within hearing
distance.
