After you install your phone, complete the procedures in this section.

INSTALLING THE BATTERY

Follow these steps to install the supplied battery into the handset.
Then, charge the BATTERY as described under "Charging the Battery.", below.

1. Remove the MEMORY directory and its plastic cover from the handset.

2. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw that secures the
BATTERY compartment cover. Then, remove the cover by sliding it in
    the direction of the arrow.

3. Attach the battery's connector to the connector inside the BATTERY
compartment. Then, place the battery inside the compartment.

4. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.
Then, replace the MEMORY directory and its plastic cover.

If you follow the instructions in "Charging the Battery,", below, the
supplied battery should last for several years. When the BATTERY loses
its ability to fully recharge, order a replacement battery through your
local Radio Shack store.

CHARGING THE BATTERY

You must charge a new battery for at least 24 hours before you use the
phone. Recharge the battery when the BATT LOW indicator lights.

NOTE: If battery power is low, POWER is ON, and the handset is not in
use, BATT LOW slowly flashes. If battery power is too low, the
BATT LOW indicator does not light.

When you first charge the BATTERY, set POWER to OFF.

When you recharge the BATTERY, you can set POWER to ON, but the
BATTERY recharges more quickly if you set POWER to OFF.

To charge or recharge the battery, place the handset on the cradle.
       The CHARGE indicator lights.

NOTES: If the CHARGE indicator does not light when you place the handset
on the cradle, be sure the battery and AC adapter are correctly
        and securely connected.

Also, check the charging contacts on the handset and base. If the
contacts are dirty or tarnished, clean them with a pencil eraser.

The first time you use your phone, it might not work and you might
hear an error tone. This also might happen after you recharge the
battery when it has completely discharged.

If this happens, be sure the handset is turned on. Then, return
the handset to the cradle for 5 seconds. This resets the security
        access code.

About once a month, fully discharge the battery. Otherwise, the
battery loses its ability to fully recharge, and you will have to
        recharge it more often.

To fully discharge the battery, keep the handset off the cradle
until the BATT LOW indicator comes on. Then, return the handset
to the cradle, and fully recharge the battery.

SETTING THE DIALING MODE

Set MODE for the type of service you have. If you are not sure which type
of service you have, do this test.

1. Set MODE to TONE.

2. Lift the handset and listen for a dial tone.

3. Press any number other than 0.

If the dial tone stops, you have touch-tone service.

If the dial tone continues, you have pulse service. Set MODE to
    PULSE.

SETTING THE HANDSET VOLUME

Adjust the handset's VOLUME control to set the volume of the sound you
hear through the handset.

SETTING THE SPEAKERPHONE VOLUME

Adjust the base's VOLUME control to set the volume of the sound you hear
through the speakerphone.

SETTING THE RINGER/TONE VOLUMES

The base and handset each have a RINGER switch.

Set the handset's RINGER switch to HI or LO to set the volumes for the
handset's ringer and its tones (including paging, error, and button-press
confirmation tones). Or, set it to OFF to turn off the handset's ringer
and tones. Set the RINGER switch to HI or LO to set the volume for the
speakerphone's ringer and tones, or set it to OFF to turn off the
speakerphone's ringer and tones.

NOTE: Even if you set both RINGER switches to OFF, you can still make
outgoing calls. If you can hear the ringer of any phone on the
same phone line, you can still answer calls.
