CHECKLIST

For dependable operation, the steps below must be performed in sequence. 
This checklist summarizes these steps in their proper order.  A detailed
description of each step appears after the checklist.

1.  Install the Base Unit
    - Connect the power cord to an AC outlet.
    - Connect the modular plug to a modular jack.

2.  Charge the Handset
    - Set the POWER switch to OFF.
    - Place the Handset on the Base Unit; the red charging indicator
      will light.
    - Allow the Handset to charge completely (24 - 48 hours).

3.  Enter the Security Code
    - Turn Handset POWER on.
    - Press the CODE ENTER button on the Base Unit; a short tone will
      sound from the Handset.
    - Enter a four-digit code on the Handset keypad (using 0 - 9);
      another short tone will sound to indicate the number has been
      stored.

4.   See OPERATION (Faxback Doc. # 17834).

INSTALLING THE BASE UNIT

The ET-410 comes with a modular plug installed on the end of its telephone
cable.  Connect it directly to the phone lines through a standard modular
jack (used throughout the USA).

If a home has older, 4-prong receptacles or telephones are wired directly
to the wall, Radio Shack sells the jacks and adapters necessary to make the
conversion.  Or the telephone company can update the wiring in a home to
the modular system.

NOTE:  The telephone company is authorized to charge for installation
       of such jacks.  They might ask for the USOC number for the plug
       connection.  This number is RJ-11C.

1.  Disconnect the regular telephone from the wall jack and connect the ET-
    410 modular plug in its place.

2.  Connect the AC power cord to a standard AC outlet.

3.  If the ET-410's intercom feature will be used, plug a regular 
    telephone into the modular jack on the back of the ET-410 Base
    Unit.  A telephone connected here may be used normally or as an
    intercom with the ET-410 Handset.

WARNING:  This unit must be grounded for proper lightning protection.

Installation Hints

- To avoid tripping over wires and damaging the unit, position the Base so
  that the wires are not in the way of normal activities.

- Fully extend the Base Unit antenna.

- Check to see that the POWER indicator is on.

CHARGING THE HANDSET

The Handset has a built-in rechargeable battery pack.  As supplied, this
battery pack is usually fully discharged.  Before use, the Handset battery
pack should be charged for 24 -48 hours.

To charge the Handset battery pack, the Base Unit must be installed
as described above.

1.  Be sure the POWER switch on the Handset is off.

2.  Place the Handset in its cradle on the Base Unit.

3.  The red charging indicator will light on the Handset when the
    Handset is charging properly.

NOTE:  Charging will be hindered if the charging contacts become dirty or
       tarnished; clean them occasionally with a pencil eraser.

Charging Hints

- Once the battery back has been fully charged, recharge the Handset
  about two hours for every one hour it is used.

- The Handset uses a small amount of power, even when no one is talking on
  the ET-410.  A full charge will last 24 hours with the POWER switch set
  to ON; the charge will last several days with the switch in the OFF
  position.  It is best to have the Handset on charge, whenever possible.

- The charging rate is automatically reduced as the batteries approach a
  full charge.  They will not be harmed by leaving the Handset on charge.

- It is acceptable to leave the Handset turned on while it's charging on
  the Base (after the initial 24 - 48 hour charge).  However, to obtain
  maximum use of batteries, turn the Handset off to charge every month or
  so.  Note however the Handset is disconnected from the line:  it won't
  ring even if an outside call is received.  (The regular telephone
  connected to the ET-410 will ring.)

- When the Handset is constantly charging, when battery power is used it is
  continually replenished.  Because only a small amount of battery power is
  used, the unit loses the capability to use the rest of its power.  To get
  the most use out of batter power, every month or so charge the Handset
  completely, than take it off the charging unit.  Now use battery power
  alone unit it's almost discharged.  Before all power is used, recharge
  the batteries completely.

ENTERING THE SECURITY CODE

Understanding the Security Code

The exclusive programmable security code feature built into the ET-410 will
prevent unauthorized use of a phone line.  Each time the TALK PUSH HANG-UP
button is pressed, a personally selected security code is automatically
transmitted from the Handset to the Base Unit.  The Base Unit compares the
code from the Handset with its security code.  If the two codes are the
same, the call may proceed; if they are not the same, the Handset will
sound an error signal and the TALK indicator will go off.  Once the
security code is entered, the above "verification" procedure takes place
automatically each time the TALK PUSH HANG-UP button is pressed.

To Enter the Code

1.  With Handset POWER turned on, press the CODE ENTER button on the 
    back of the Base Unit.  The Handset will give a short tone and its
    TALK indicator will light.

2.  Enter any four-digit number on the Handset keypad.  (Use the 0 - 9
    buttons only.)  The TALK indicator will go off and another short 
    tone will sound.

The security code has now been entered in the Handset and the Base Unit.

Security Code Hints

- A Memory protection circuit in the Base Unit holds the memory for 2-1/2
  hours after unplugging the Base Unit.  The security code will be lost,
  and must be re-entered, if the Handset battery pack discharges completely
  or if the Base Unit is unplugged for over 2-1/2 hours.  If the code is
  lost, there will be an error signal when TALK PUSH HANG-UP is pressed.

- The security code prevents other cordless telephones from initiating or
  answering a call on the phone line.  It does not prevent other radio
  units on the same frequency from inadvertently hearing a conversation or
  causing interference on the ET-410; this can happen with any cordless
  telephone.

SETTING THE MODE (Tone/Pulse Dialing)

To determine the proper setting for the TONE/PULSE switch, find out if the
phone line is a rotary or touch-tone dialing type.  To do this, connect the
phone, set the switch to TONE, lift the Handset from the Base Unit or press
the TALK PUSH HANG-UP button (to get a dial tone), and press any of the
number keys on the unit.  If the dial tone continues, the line is a rotary
type; if it stops, it is a true touch-tone dialing line.  If the line is
rotary service, set the switch on the Base to PULSE.

IMPORTANT:  If a regular touch- tone dialing phone system is familiar,
            don't be alarmed when the same tone sounds every time a key is
            pressed even if the switch on the Base Unit is set to TONE. 
            The key-tone on the Handset is there to assure that the button
            input is accepted.  The tones for dialing are generated in the
            Base Unit.

It is possible to communicate with touch-tone access equipment (bank-by-
phone, alternate long distance service, etc.) even if the phone line is a
rotary pulse type.  After reaching the desired number using pulse dialing,
press the LDT key.  The LDT indicator will light and the ET-410 is
temporarily put into touch-tone mode.  Then key in the desired information
such as a personal ID (billing) code number, area code and number, etc.

Pressing the LDT key again will return the unit to pulse mode, but it is
actually not necessary because hanging up automatically returns the ET-410
to pulse mode.
