ET-410 DUoFONE Cordless Electronic Telephone System
(430-0551) Operation Faxback Doc. # 17583
Always set the Handset POWER switch to ON. This activates the Handset. If
set to OFF, the Handset won't ring even if the incoming call is received.
The OFF position is used to recharge the Handset battery pack or to set the
ET-410 to standby when it won't be used for a while (like when on
vacation).
When close to the Base Unit, use the Handset the same as any ordinary
telephone. Lift the Handset from the Base Unit to get into "off-hook"
state, return the Handset to the Base Unit cradle to hang up.
When away from the Base Unit, the TALK PUSH HANG-UP button does the same
thing. Pressing this button switches between on-hook/off-hook status.
Watch the TALK indicator to see which mode the phone is in.

Quick Reference to Special Keys
Using the REDIAL
To redial the last manually dialed number, press REDIAL. This temporary
memory will hold up to 32 digits.
If there is a busy signal, simply hang up and wait a few minutes; then
press the TALK PUSH HANG-UP key until the TALK indicator lights and press
REDIAL. The redial memory is not affected by memory-dialed numbers, but
the redial memory is replaced each time a new number is manually entered.
The redial memory number is cleared when the TONE/PULSE switch is slid to
change mode.
NOTE: When attempting to redial a number that includes a mode change
(LDT key), the phone will stop dialing when it reaches the LDT
entry. To continue dialing, press the REDIAL key again.
Using the PAUSE
Some telephone systems, such as in offices, need to dial code number
and then "pause" for the outside line to connect.
When storing a number in memory (or for redial use), program this pause by
pressing PAUSE in the desired position. Then, when memory-dialing, the ET-
410 will stop at the PAUSE entry. Dialing will automatically continue
after three seconds.
For example, to sore 9 (access code) 123-4567, press:
9 PAUSE 1234567
NOTE: Pause is counted as a digit in memory dialing.
Using the PRIVACY
It is possible to disconnect the microphone in the Handset, without ending
the call, by pressing PRIVACY. As long as this key is held, callers cannot
hear anything spoken into the ET-410, but their voices are still heard.
Using the LDT
To communicate with tone access equipment when on a rotary line, use the
LDT key. When LDT is pressed (after the special service number), the unit
switches from pulse mode to tone mode. Make sure that the TONE/PULSE
switch is set to PULSE.
Using the FLASH
There are many special phone services that require a hook-switch flash.
The FLASH key will do this. For example, call waiting is a special
telephone company service available in some areas. The user can place a
coll on hold and take a second incoming call by pressing the FLASH key.
Repeating the FLASH key signal allows the user to alternate between calls.
Storing a Number in the Memory
Up to 32 phone numbers of 28 digits each may be stored in the memory. Each
of these telephone numbers is given a two-digit code number (01-32) for
memory dialing.
1. Lift the Handset from the Base Unit or press TALK PUSH HANG-UP
button. TALK indicator will light.
2. Press MEMORY STORE key.
3. Press the number keys for the desired telephone number.
4. Press MEMORY key.
5. Press two-digit code number for the desired memory position (01-32).
If there is a mistake when entering a number, press the TALK PUSH HANG-UP
button or return the Handset to the Base Unit and begin again with step 2
above.
Example: Storing a seven-digit local number (123-4567)
Press Comment

MEMORY Tells the memory that the number is
complete.
01 (Two-digit code) Assigns a two-digit code to the entered
number; use any number from 01 to 32.
CAUTION: When assigning a code number, any previous telephone number
stored in that position is automatically erased.
To continue storing numbers in the memory, repeat the procedure from the
third step until all 32 memory positions are filled. Use the label on the
back of the Handset as a reminder of what number is stored in each
position.
Adding a Pause to a Number
Some office telephone systems and computer services require a pause during
dialing to allow access to an outside line or the computer. Add a pause
when storing a number by pressing PAUSE in the desired position. If PAUSE
is pressed once, the ET-410 will pause three seconds at the PAUSE entry and
automatically continue dialing. Press PAUSE twice and the pause will be
six seconds; three times will be nine seconds, and so forth.
Each time PAUSE is pressed, it counts as one of the 28 digits of memory
capacity.
Example: Storing 123-4567 with an access code of 9.

digit capacity.
Memory Dialing
1. Lift the Handset from the Base Unit or press the TALK PUSH HANG-UP
button.
2. Press the MEMORY key.
3. Press the code number for the telephone number to dial (01-32).
If LDT is entered in memory, the dialing will stop at LDT entry. Press the
MEMORY key again to continue dialing.
IMPORTANT: The circuit will hold the memory for approximately 2-1/2 hours
without AC power, but if power is disconnected longer than that
all stored numbers may need to be re-entered.
Using the Number Label
When storing numbers in the memory, make a note (person's name or a place)
next to the code number for a reminder of what number is stored in each
position. Press the plastic cover to one side and remove it. Then write
the desired information next to the corresponding code number and replace
the cover. Use a pencil, in case stored numbers need to be changed.
Below the keyboard there's another number label. Write down the home
phone number here.
Testing the Battery
The built-in battery pack in the Handset is automatically tested. When it
needs recharging, the BATT LOW indicator will light. Be sure to recharge
the battery pack before it becomes completely discharged.
NOTE: If the battery pack is allowed to discharge completely, there might
not be enough power to light the BATT LOW indicator. In this case,
the battery pack must be charge for 24 - 48 hours.
Changing the Battery Pack
The battery pack has an average life of several years. However, after full
charge, if the Handset does not work, the Nickel-Cadmium battery pack may
need to be changed. To change the battery pack, remove the screw above the
battery pack cover. Slide the cover off. Remove the screw that holds the
retaining arm in place and pull out the ribbon. Detach the connector plug
and remove the old battery pack. Attach the connector to the new battery
pack and insert the pack with the connector wire dressed to the upper part
of the compartment. Replace the ribbon, retainer screw, and cover. After
changing the battery pack, be sure to charge the Handset on the Base Unit
and re-enter the security code.
Extra batteries can be ordered at a local Radio Shack store.
Mounting the Belt Clip
Using the Intercom Features
To call the Base Unit, press and hold CALL on the Handset until someone
answers the regular telephone connected to the Base Unit by lifting its
receiver and switching to INTERCOM.
To call the Handset, switch to INTERCOM and then press CALL on the Base
Unit. The person with the Handset may answer by pressing TALK PUSH HANG-
UP, the same as for an outside telephone call.
When answering an outside call on the regular telephone, the Handset may be
signalled to join the conversation by pressing CALL. When TALK PUSH HANG-
UP is pressed on the Handset, the Handset will be on the line, like an
extension telephone.
The ET-410 is designed to signal if an outside call is received during an
intercom conversation. The ringer on the Base Unit will sound when this
happens. To answer the outside call, simply slide the switch on the Base
Unit from INTERCOM to TALK position.
To end an intercom call, slide the switch from INTERCOM to TALK position, a
warning tone is generated in ten seconds to remind the user to set to TALK
position.
Explanation of Three Positions
TALK
This position means the unit works as a telephone. Set the switch to
this position to receive outside calls.
TELEPHONE HOLD
When a regular telephone is connected to the Base Unit, use this position
to put an outside call on hold while carrying on an intercom conversation
with someone at the Handset.
When receiving an outside call from the regular telephone, slide this
switch to the HOLD position and press CALL to call the Handset. In this
position, a two-way conversation is possible, or a three-way conversation
is possible by leaving this switch set to TALK.
An outside call remains on hold for up to six minutes. To release hold,
slide the switch to TALK.
After three minutes in the HOLD position, an alarm tone sounds twice every
10 seconds for two minutes and the HOLD indicator flashes. At five minutes
the tones become more frequent. During the last minute the INTERCOM
indicator flashes. After six minutes, the hold call will automatically be
cut off and the ET-410 enters the intercom mode. The INTERCOM indicator
and the tones will continue until the switch is released from HOLD to TALK.
INTERCOM
This position creates an intercom between the Handset and the regular
telephone connected to the Base Unit.
THE FCC WANTS YOU TO KNOW
It is very unlikely, but...if the ET-410 causes problems on the phone
line, the telephone company has the right to discontinue service
temporarily. If this happens, the telephone company will give notification
and offer the opportunity to have the problem corrected.
Also, the telephone company has the right to change their lines and
equipment. If these changes affect the ET-410 or require changes to its
connection, the telephone company will give written notification, so any
necessary steps can be taken to ensure uninterrupted telephone service.
Non Hearing-Aid Compatible
Please NOTE: This phone is non-hearing aid-compatible, and the FCC
prohibits its use in the following locations:
1. Any public or semipublic location where coin-operated or credit
card telephones may be found.
2. Elevators, highways, and tunnels (automobile, subway, railroad, or
pedestrian) where a person with impaired hearing might be isolated
in an emergency.
3. Places where telephones are installed specifically to alert emergency
authorities such as fire, police, or medical assistance personnel.
4. Hospital rooms, residential health care facilities, convalescent
homes, and prisons, where telephones are used specifically for
signaling life-threatening or emergency situations, if alternative
signaling methods are not available.
5. Work stations for hearing-imparied personnel.
6. Hotel, motel, or apartment building lobbies, in stores where telephones
are used by persons to order merchandise, in public transportation
terminals where telephones are used to call taxis or to reserve lodging
or rental automobiles.
7. Hotel and motel rooms. (At least ten percent of the rooms must contain
hearing aid-compatible telephones, which will be provided to hearing-
impaired customers upon request.)
PROBLEMS?
We don't expect any problems with the ET-410, but if problems arise, try
these suggestions.
You have Interference from another Cordless Telephone
- The ET-410 is available in four different operating frequencies. If
there are interference problems from another cordless telephone in
the neighborhood, the unit may be exchanged for a different frequency
unit within 30 days of the date of purchase.
Doesn't Work
- Check the AC power and telephone connections to the Base Unit.
- Be sure the antennas on both units are fully extended.
- Make sure the Handset battery pack is charged.
- The security code was not properly entered or has been lost.
Try entering it again following the sequence on page 12 of the
Owner's Manual.
- Make sure the TALK-HOLD-INTERCOM switch is in the desired
position.
- Be sure the POWER switch is set to ON.
You Hear a Series of Beep Tones from the Handset
NOTE: When TALK PUSH HANG-UP is pressed, the security code is transmitted
from the Handset to the Base Unit. If the Base Unit doesn't
"recognize" the code the first time, the Handset will send the code
several times before "giving up". If the beep tones sound and then
the ET-410 works normally, this is what has happened.
- Out of communication range. Move closer to the Base Unit.
- The security code has not been entered properly or has been lost;
enter the security code following the sequence outlined on page 12 of
the Owner's Manual.
- AC power to the Base Unit has been lost; make sure the power cord is
plugged in.
The Range is Shortened

Telephone calls are automatically switched and routed through a complex
network of equipment. Weak or noisy lines are occasionally encountered in
this network, and calls will sometimes have to be redialed.
