Telephone
SELECTING A LOCATION
You can place the phone on a desktop or table, or mount it on a wall.
Select a location that is:
near an AC outlet
near a telephone jack
out of the way of normal activities
away from electrical machinery, electrical appliances, metal walls, or
filing cabinets
away from wireless intercoms, alarms, and room monitors
The base's location affects the handset's range. If you have a choice of
several locations, try each to see which provides the best performance.
The telephone connects directly to a modular telephone line jack. If your
telephone wiring does not have a modular jack, you can update the wiring
yourself or have the telephone company update it for you.
Your local Radio Shack store sells jacks and adapters to convert older
wiring methods to modular wiring.
The telephone company charges to install the necessary jacks.
The USOC number of the jack to be installed is RJ11C (or RJ11W for a
wall jack).
DESKTOP CONNECTION
To use the phone on a desk, table, or shelf, plug the supplied telephone
cord into a modular phone jack. Fully extend the base's antenna and place
it in a vertical position.
MOUNTING ON THE WALL
Follow these steps to mount the phone's base directly on the wall or on a
wall plate.
NOTE: To mount the phone's base directly on a wall, use two screws (not
supplied) with heads that fit into the keyhole slots on the back of
the wall-mounting bracket. Drill two holes 3 15/16 inches apart.
Then thread the screws into the wall, letting the heads extend about
1/8 inch from the wall.
1. Remove the handset from the cradle and install the wall-mount bracket
on the bottom of the phone's base.
NOTE: Insert the top tabs first.
2. Wrap the attached modular cord around the wall bracket.
3. To mount the phone on a wall plate, route the cord through the strain
relief channel and leave a short length of cord extending from the
center of the bracket.
To mount the phone directly on a wall, route the cord through the
strain relief channel and leave enough cord extending from the bottom
of the bracket to connect to the modular wall jack.
4. Place the bracket's keyhole slots over the screw heads or wall plate's
studs, and press down on the phone's base to secure it.
5. Slide the handset holder on the base, turn the holder over and replace
it, then put the handset in the cradle.
6. Fully extend the base's antenna and place it in a vertical position.
CONNECTING AC POWER
Insert the supplied AC adapter's barrel plug into the DC 12V jack on the
back of the phone's base. Route the adapter's cord through the strain
relief slot on top of the base. Then plug the adapter into a standard AC
outlet.
The CHARGE indicator lights.
CONNECTING AND CHARGING THE BATTERY
The ET-506 comes with the battery installed. Simply follow these steps to
connect the battery, then charge it as described under "Charging the
Battery."
1. Press down and slide off the handset's battery compartment cover in
the direction of the arrow.
2. Insert the battery connector's plug into the jack inside the
compartment.
CAUTION: The plug fits only one way. Insert it with the tab up.
3. Replace the cover and return the handset to the cradle.
The supplied battery should last for several years. When the battery
loses its ability to fully recharge, order a replacement from your local
Radio Shack store (see "Replacing the Battery").
Charging the Battery
You must charge the battery for at least 24 hours before you use the phone
the first time. Recharge the battery when the phone's LOW BATT indicator
lights.
NOTE: If the LOW BATT indicator does not light, but the phone does not
work, recharge the battery.
To charge the battery, place the handset on the cradle. The CHARGE
indicator lights.
NOTE: If the CHARGE indicator does not light when you place the handset on
the cradle, be sure the battery and AC adapter are correctly and
securely connected. Also, check the charging contacts on the
handset and the base. If the contacts are dirty or tarnished, clean
them with a pencil eraser.
When you first use the phone or after you recharge the battery, the
phone might not work and you might hear an error tone. If this
happens, return the handset to the cradle for 5 seconds.
About once a month, fully discharge the battery by keeping the
handset off the cradle until the LOW BATT indicator lights.
Otherwise, the battery loses its ability to fully recharge.
SETTING THE DIALING MODE
Set MODE on the right side of the phone's base for the type of service you
have. If you are not sure which type you have, do this simple test.
1. Set MODE to TONE.
2. Lift the handset and listen for a dial tone.
3. Press any number other than 0.
If the dial tone stops, you have touch-tone service. Leave MODE set
to TONE.
If the dial tone continues, you have pulse service. Set MODE to
PULSE.
SETTING THE HANDSET VOLUME
Adjust the handset's VOLUME to set the volume of the sound you hear through
the handset.
SETTING THE SPEAKERPHONE VOLUME
Adjust the base's VOLUME to set the volume of the sound you hear through
the speakerphone.
SETTING THE RINGER/TONE VOLUME
Set the base's RINGER switch to HIGH or LOW to set the volume for the
speakerphone's ringer and paging tones.
NOTE: Even if you set RINGER to OFF, you can still make outgoing calls.
If you hear another phone on the same line ring, you can still
answer calls.
