Installing Batteries

Your radio requires two AAA batteries for power. For the best performance,
we recommend alkaline batteries, such as RadioShack Cat. No. 23-555.

CAUTIONS: Use only fresh batteries of the require size and recommended
          type.

Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of batteries
(standard, alkaline, or rechargeable), or rechargeable batteries
          of different capacities.

Follow these steps to install batteries.

1. Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow and
    remove the cover.

2. Put two fresh AAA batteries in the battery compartment, as indicated
by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside.

3. Replace the cover.

When the sound weakens, replace the batteries.

CAUTIONS: If you do not plan to use the radio for a week or more, remove
the batteries. Batteries can leak chemicals that can destroy
           electronic parts.

Always dispose of old batteries promptly and properly. Do not
           bury or burn them.

Setting The Clock

1. With the radio off, press MEM/CLOCK. The time display flashes.

2. Repeatedly press (or hold down) TUNING /\ to set the hour.

3. Repeatedly press (or hold down) TUNING \/ to set the minute.

Note: PM appears during PM hours.

4. The radio stores the time 5 seconds after the last keypress. Press
MEM/CLOCK again to store it sooner.

Using The Speaker or Earphones

To listen to your radio using the built-in speaker, make sure SPK./PHONES
is set to SPK.

Note: For the best reception while using the built-in speaker, connect
the supplied antenna (see "Using the TV/FM/WX Antenna", below).

Or, you can use a pair of stereo earphones or headphones (not supplied)
with an 1/8-inch (3.5 mm) plug to listen to your radio.

1. Insert the earphones' or headphones' plug into the radio's (headphone)
    jack.

2. Set SPK./PHONES to PHONES.

Note: The built-in speaker disconnects when you set SPK./PHONES to PHONES.
The phones' cord acts as an antenna.

Listening Safely

To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use earphones or
headphones.

Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After
you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level.

Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume
listening can lead to permanent hearing loss.

Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt
to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort
  might still damage your hearing.

Traffic Safety

Do not wear earphones or headphones while operating a motor vehicle or
riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and could be illegal
in some areas.

Even though some earphones or headphones let you hear some outside sounds
when listening at normal volume levels, they still can present a traffic
hazard.

Changing The AM/FM Band Step Rate

Your radio's AM/FM band is preset to tune in 10 kHz increments for AM and
200 kHz for FM - the standard frequency steps for radio frequencies in the
United States. If you travel to other countries where the step rate is 9
kHz for AM and 50 kHz for FM (Europe, for example), you can set your radio
to tune in those increments by following these steps.

1. Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow and
    remove the cover.

2. Use a pointed object (such as a straightened paper clip) to set the
switch inside the compartment to 10K or 9K (for the AM step rate).

3. Replace the cover.

Using The FM/TV/WX Antenna

To receive FM, TV audio, or weather broadcasts while you are listening to
the built-in speaker, connect the supplied FM/TV/WX antenna by inserting
its 1/8-inch (3.5 mm) plug into the radio's (headphone) jack.

Using The Belt Clip

For hands-free carrying, slide the radio's belt clip over your belt or
waistband.

To remove the belt clip, press the tab on the clip and slide it in the
direction of the arrow marked on the clip. Then lift the bottom of the
clip away from the radio.

To re-attach the belt clip, place the two tabs into the recessed areas on
the radio and slide the clip in the opposite direction of the arrow marked
on it until it snaps into place.
