Compatibility

While we obviously want to make installation of your thermostat easy so
that you can enjoy its features for years it is important that you first
verify that your heating/cooling system is compatible. If you notice
that your unit is designated as a "heat pump" or multistage system, this
unit is not suitable and should be promptly returned to your RadioShack
store. If your system is other than a heat pump, the following will
assist you to determine the compatibility:

1. Locate the fuse box or switch that controls power to your furnace or
air conditioner. Turn off the power.

2. Remove the cover or decorative plate of your present thermostat.

3. Using an appropriate type screwdriver, carefully loosen and remove the
screws that affix the thermostat to the wall. Gently pull the thermo-
   stat away form the wall.

4. Note the number of wires as well as their labels or colors which come
from inside the wall and are connected to the thermostat.

A. If there are 2 wires, the thermostat is suitable.

B. If there are 3 to 5 wires, the thermostat is suitable. Record their
   color and labels immediately below:

    COLOR TERMINAL LABEL

1. _______________ ___________________
2. _______________ ___________________
3. _______________ ___________________
4. _______________ ___________________
5. ______________ ___________________

C. If there are 6 or more wires you likely have a variation of a heat pump
or at least a multiple stage system. The thermostat is not compatible
with such a system. The thermostat is not compatible with such a
system. Return the product to RadioShack.

If you have determined that the thermostat is compatible and if you wish
to install it, before programming, turn to page 21 for mounting and
wiring.

Programming

The MICRONTA Programmable Thermostat may be programmed before or after
installation. If you have determined that your heating/cooling system is compatible, you may wish to install the unit and then program it at the location of operation. Installation instructions begin on page 21.

However, we have found that it is easier to program the thermostat on a desk or table in a wall lighted room having the convenience of paper and pencil nearby for notes.

Writing Your Program

A typical weekday heating/cooling schedule follows. Tailor the schedule
to your personal activities. Then, with this schedule in front of you,
you can program the thermostat.

Typical Time Your Time
Activity AM/PM Schedule

The second entry of a setback or lower temperature range assures that the most economical setting will occur should you stay up later than 10:30 and override that first setting for comfort while you are awake.

Entering Your First Day's Program

For this example, we shall use the sample above. If your schedule is
different, be sure to use your time and temperature setpoints.

1. Place the thermostat on your table. Open the door on the right of the
unit. Snap a 9V alkaline type battery, RadioShack Cat. No. 23-553 or
equivalent onto the battery terminal observing proper polarity.
Replace the battery every 2 to 4 years for reliability.

2. Move the Power switch to ON. The display will show.

3. After a few seconds the display will show only the days of the week
and a square which will be close to your current room temperature.
If you tap the HEAT or A/C button you will see the factory pre-set
   range of 68 - 78 degrees.

4. Press and hold the MODE button until the word PROGRAM is displayed. At
that point, release the button. The time shown will be 12 0 AM which
   is midnight.

5. Press and hold the SLOW button until you reach the time you wish to
have the thermostat initiate it's first operation.

To advance the time by 30 minute increments, HOLD the button. (12
       0...12 3...1 0...1 3...2 0 etc).

To reverse the time, if you went too far, by 30 minute steps, TAP
       the button.

6. Since you are going to program your thermostat once for the entire
year, you will enter both your desired temperature for the heating
season as well as the temperature for the air conditioning season. The
HEAT and A/C buttons allow you to enter the highest (heating) and
lowest (cooling) temperature. If you do not have central air
conditioning, simply ignore the A/C button.

The temperature Scale has small squares and arrows representing the range
of temperature from 54 to 90 degrees F. By HOLDING or TAPPING first the
HEAT and then the A/C buttons, you can have the LCD display show a
matching scale of squares that indicate the lowest and highest
temperatures you desired at the time and day of the week programmed.

HOLDING the Heat button raises the lowest temperature. Tapping the button
lowers it. HOLDING the A/C button lowers the maximum temperature.
TAPPING the button, raises it.

7. When you have entered your first desired temperature range for the
first operation of the first day of the week (in our example at 6:00 AM
we want the house to be at 68 degrees in the winter and at 74 degrees)
in the summertime) press and hold the SLOW button until you reach the
next operation time, which in our example is 7:30 AM when we wish the
range to be changed to 54 and 80 degrees.

8. By using the HEAT and A/C buttons, holding or tapping as needed, set
the next range of temperatures until the entire typical day's times and
temperature ranges you entered for the first day by HOLDING the FAST
button which advances to the next setpoint time. TAPPING the FAST
button will reverse the review direction.

You may use the HEAT and A/C button to change any entry which is in
error. See To Make Temperature Changes To Your Program below. When
you are satisfied that the first day's entries are correct. TAP the
MODE button once. This will lock in your program for that first day.
It will automatically copy that same program to each day of the rest of
   the week.

To Make Temperature Changes To Your Program

To change the program for any given day, follow the directions below.
(If, however, you wish to make sure the same change in the program for
every day of the week. it is easier to start over and re-program the first
day. Turn Power off, then on. Then refer to page 12.)

1. Determine what changes you want to make and then use the FAST or SLOW
buttons to change the day and the time to where you wish, to modify the
   program as originally entered.

Use FAST to advance to the different temperature set points for each
day. HOLD to advance. TAP to reverse direction.

When the day of the week and the time of that day is reached, change
the temperature setpoints using the HEAT and A/C buttons.

How To Change a Program Setpoint - Time and Temperature

Before you change or erase a setpoint, you may want to review your
program. Use FAST to advance by temperature setpoints through your entire program.

1. To erase a setpoint, hold the HEAT or A/C button until that setpoint
   disappears.

Example: On Friday evening your bedtime may likely be later than for
the previous part of the week. Our example used a typical bed-
time temperature range of 60 (winter) and 80 degrees (summer)
at 10:30 PM. If, on Friday you retire at 11:30, you might want
the house warmer than 60 degrees or cooler than 80 degrees
between 10:30 and 11:30 PM. So you would want to erase the
10:30 PM setpoint and program a new setpoint range at 11:30 PM.

Use the FAST button to move the day to F(riday) at 10:30 PM. Hold the
HEAT or A/C button until the range indicators disappear. Then use the
SLOW button to advance to the new time 11:30 PM. Finally, tap the Mode Button to lock in the new setting.

To Set The Clock

In order for the thermostat to know when to perform an operation, it must
know the correct time. To enter the correct time follow these steps:

1. Press and hold MODE until SET CLOCK is displayed.

2. Use the FAST and SLOW buttons to change the time shown to the present
time to the nearest ten minutes.

To advance the clock by 10 minute intervals, tap the SLOW button.

Make sure that when you are entering the proper time that you are doing
so on the correct day of the week.

3. When you have set the correct time to the nearest 10 minutes intervals,
press the MODE button to return to the display of room temperature.

To Make Adjustment for Time Changes

Since the thermostat is programmed once for the entire year, it will be
necessary to make an adjustment for Daylight Savings Time and Standard
Time.

1. To move the clock AHEAD one hour in the Spring, hold MODE until SET
CLOCK is shown. Then press and hold SLOW for 6 seconds. Next, tap the
MODE button to lock in the change until Fall.

2. To move the clock BACK one hour in the Fall, hold Mode until SET CLOCK
is shown. Then tap the SLOW button 6 times. Finally, tap the MODE
button to lock in the change.

To Override Your Program

There are 3 ways to change the room temperature without changing your
program:

A. Short Term Override B. HOLD C. HOLD UNTIL

A. Short term override: Do not open the right-side cover. Use the front
panel HEAT and A/C buttons to change the upper and lower set points to
make your home warmer or cooler. The new maximum and minimum temper-
ature will be in effect until the next scheduled program change.

B. HOLD: Use this feature when you wish to hold a specific temperature
for an indefinite period of time. The thermostat will suspend
the daily program and hold the temperature you desire until you
          change it.

   1. Press and hold MODE until HOLD is displayed. See Figure 6.

   2. Use HEAT and A/C to set the desired temperature range which will
now be "on hold" until cancelled.

   3. To resume your daily program (to cancel HOLD) press and hold MODE
until HOLD disappears and the display recycles through all modes,
finally showing the room temperature. See Figure 7.

C. HOLD UNTIL: This feature allows you to lock in one temperature range
and hold it up to one week at which time the thermostat
will revert automatically to your daily program. Using
this feature you can be sure that your home will be at
your chosen temperature when you return not several hour
                later.

   1. Press MODE until HOLD UNTIL is displayed.

   2. Use the HEAT and A/C buttons to check the present range and to
change it to suit your plans (vacation, business trip).

   3. Use FAST to step through your daily program until you reach the
day and setpoint for the particular time of that day when you wish
to have the thermostat resume your routine program.

To Erase Your Entire Program.

1. Turn the POWER switch to OFF. Your Program will be erased.

2. Move the switch to ON when you wish to begin entry of a new program.

Note: Even in the event that your personal program is lost, you will
still retain the factory program (68 degree heat - 78 degrees cool)
so that your home will not be totally without heat or cooling until
       your program can be re-entered.

The Waiting Indicator

To maximum the efficiency of your air conditioning system , the A/C fan
will not run for about 6 minutes after the compressor shuts off. If
during this time you try to override the A/C temperature, the display will show WAITING until the 6 minutes pass.
