Game Descriptions
This section describes all of the games you can play on your Talking Laptop. Each description includes:
Object: Describes the object of the game (what the game is about).
Play: Explains how to play the game. Two-player games are the same as
one-player games, except a player must first press his or her
button (PLAYER A or PLAYER B) to answer.
Scoring: For games with scores, the score appears after every ten
problems.
MISSING LETTER
Object: Guess the missing letter(s) that complete the word.
Play: One or two players. A moving picture appears, the Laptop
pronounces the word, and the word appears on the display with one
or two letter(s) missing. When the Laptop asks, "What is the
missing letter?" or "What are the missing letters?," press the
missing letter(s) on the keyboard, then ENTER.
Note: In Levels 1-3, one letter is missing. In Levels 4-6, two letters
are missing and you must enter the letters in correct order.
Scoring: Yes.
SPELLING
Object: Spell the word.
Play: One or two players. A moving picture appears on the display. The
Laptop asks, "How do you spell ______ ?" Press the correct letters
in order, then ENTER.
Notes: After an incorrect try, any correct letters you entered remain on
the display to help you.
In Levels 1 and 2, the Laptop immediately shows the first letter
of the word and dashes for the number of letters in the correct
answer. At higher levels, you do not get a hint.
Scoring: Yes.
TENSES
Object: Give the present or past tense of a verb.
Play: A verb appears and the Laptop asks, "What is the past/present
tense?" Press the correct letters to spell the word, then ENTER.
Scoring: Yes.
ANTONYMS
Object: Spell the word that means the opposite of the displayed word.
Play: One or two players. The Laptop asks, "What is the opposite word?"
and the word appears on the display. Type in the opposite word,
then press ENTER.
Note: After an incorrect try, any correct letters you entered remain on
the display to help you.
Scoring: Yes.
ANAGRAMS
Object: Rearrange the letters in a word to form a different word.
Play: One or two players. A word appears, then the Laptop scrambles the
letters. The first letter of the new word and dashes for the
remaining letters appear. The Laptop says, "Use all the letters
to spell another word." Press the letters of the new word in order
on the keyboard, then press ENTER.
Scoring: Yes.
SPELLING BUILDER
Object: Choose the correctly spelled word.
Play: One or two players. Two words appear, one spelled correctly and
the other incorrectly. (stick figure symbol) appears alternately
beside each word. The Laptop says, "Pick out the word spelled
correctly." When (stick figure symbol) appears beside the
correctly spelled word, press ENTER.
Scoring: Yes.
REVERSE WORD
Object: Provide the letter to correctly complete two words which are the
exact reverse of each other. (For example, "pat" and "tap.")
Play: One or two players. Two words appear, one missing the first letter
and the other missing the last letter. The Laptop asks, "What are
the missing letters?" Press the correct letter to complete the two
words and press ENTER.
Scoring: Yes.
ADDITION
Object: Solve the addition problems.
Play: One or two players. An addition problem appears and the Laptop
asks, "What is the correct answer?" Press the correct number
key(s) to fill in the flashing space, then press ENTER.
Scoring: Yes.
SUBTRACTION
Object: Solve the subtraction problems.
Play: One or two players. A subtraction problem appears and the Laptop
says, "What is the correct answer?" Press the correct number
key(s) to fill in the flashing spaces, then press ENTER.
Scoring: Yes.
MULTIPLICATION
Object: Solve the multiplication problems.
Play: One or two players. A multiplication problem appears and the
Laptop asks, "What is the correct answer?" Press the correct
number key(s) to fill in the flashing spaces, then press ENTER.
Scoring: Yes.
DIVISION
Object: Solve the division problems.
Play: One or two players. A division problem appears and the Laptop
asks, "What is the correct answer?" Press the correct number
key(s) to fill in the flashing spaces, then press ENTER.
Scoring: Yes.
MISSING SIGN
Object: Select the correct symbol (= < or >) to make the equation
correct.
Play: One or two players. Two sets of numbers appear and the Laptop
says, "What is the missing sign?" =, < and > flash in sequence in
the box between the two sets of numbers. When the correct symbol
appears, press ENTER.
Scoring: Yes.
EQUATION PUZZLE
Object: Place the mathematical symbol in the correct place in the equation.
Play: One or two players. An equation appears. The mathematical symbol
might be incorrectly placed. The Laptop says, "Please work out the
correct equation." Press < or > to position the mathematical
symbol correctly, then press ENTER. Or, click on the correct
position, then click on (check mark).
Scoring: Yes.
MULTIPLES & FACTORS
Object: Identify the number which is a multiple or factor of another
number. (For example, 27 is a multiple of 9; 5 is a factor of
85.)
Play: One or two players. A number appears at the lower end of a pipe
and a series of numbers appears at the upper end of the pipe. The
Laptop says, "Which is a multiple/factor of __ ?" Press < or > to
advance the series of numbers. When the correct number appears in
front of the pipe, press ENTER. Or, use the mouse to click on < or
>, then click on (check mark).
Scoring: Yes.
CALCULATOR
Object: Learn calculator functions.
Play: One player only. Use the calculator to perform standard arithmetic
calculations. Simply enter your problem and press ENTER or =. The
Laptop calculates the solution for you.
Note: Press U/AC once to cancel (undo) the last entry or clear the
display for the next calculation.
If the result of a calculation is more than 7 digits long or if you
try to divide a number by 0, E (error) appears. If this happens,
press U/AC once to clear the display.
Scoring: None for this activity.
FILM DIRECTOR
Object: Use the supplied animal and object pictures to make your own
animate "film."
Play: One player only. The Laptop says, "Choose a subject." Choose
either "Animal" or "Object" pictures, then press ENTER. Repeatedly
press /\ or \/ to scroll through the library of pictures. When you
find one you like, press ENTER again. There are three views of
each animal/object. A number appears below the picture to
correspond with each view. The Laptop says, "Press the number to
create a moving cartoon." Enter the desired number keys in any
order, then press ENTER. The Laptop shows the picture moving in
the sequence you entered.
Scoring: None for this activity.
GEOMETRY
Object: Answer questions about geometric figures.
Play: One or two players. There are only four levels to this game. A
geometric figure appears and the Laptop asks, "How many vertices/
sides/faces are there?" Press the correct answer then ENTER.
Scoring: Yes.
PICTURE PUZZLE
Object: Complete the picture by putting the pieces into the correct
position.
Play: One player only. A picture appears, scrambled in eight pieces,
then disappears. When it reappears, four pieces are missing. The
Laptop says, "Complete the picture." Press /\ or \/ to scroll
through the picture pieces in the selection panel at the bottom
right of the display. Then, press ENTER to insert the correct
piece in the flashing position. Or, use the mouse to click on /\
or \/, then click on (check mark) when the correct piece appears.
Note: To return a selected piece to the selection panel, press ERASE and
choose another piece.
Scoring: None for this activity.
COMPOSER
Object: Have fun playing music on the Laptop's special keys, then set the
Laptop to play your music back to you.
Play: One player only. The rows of keys labeled A-L and Z-V work like
keys on a musical keyboard. The bottom half of each key in those
rows is also labeled with the name of a musical note, such as DO,
RE, or MI.
Musical notes appear on the display and the Laptop says, "Compose
your own song." Press the keys to play music. Or, use the mouse
to click on each note. As you press the keys, the Laptop plays the
musical notes, and a musical note moves to the left or right on the
bottom of the display.
When you finish playing, press B/PLAY or ENTER. The Laptop replays
all of the notes you played, in the same order that you played
them.
Notes: Press N/PAUSE to insert a musical rest.
The Laptop can play back up to 50 notes, including rests (each
rest counts as 1 note). You can play more than 50 notes during
recording, but the Laptop only plays back the first 50.
To clear the keyboard's playback memory and start a new tune,
press M/RESET.
Scoring: None for this activity.
Music Library
Object: Have fun listening to 10 prerecorded songs.
Play: One player only. Some musical notes appear on the display and the
Laptop says, "Choose your favorite song." The numbers refer to
this list:
0. Brahms' Lullaby
1. Camptown Races
2. Fiddle-De-Dee
3. Frog Went A-Courtin'
4. I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing
5. The Ants Came Marching
6. Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone

Press the number key for the song you want to hear. Or, use the
mouse to click on /\ or \/, then click on (check mark) when the
number of the song you want to hear appears.
