Game Descriptions
This section describes all of the games that you can play on your Learning
Power Laptop. Each game's description includes:
Object: Describes the object of the game (what the game is about).
Play: Explains how the play the game with one or two players.
Scoring: For games the Laptop scored, the score appears after every five
problems in one-player games, and every ten problems in two
player games.
LETTER SEARCH
Object: Guess the missing letter(s) to complete the word.
Play: One-Player - A word appears with one letter missing. Press the
missing letter on the keyboard, then press ENTER.
You have three chances to answer each question. If you enter a
wrong answer, it remains on the display to help you.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering, and you have only one
chance to answer each question.
Scoring: Yes.
WORD RECALL
Object: Learn the spelling of words as they appear.
Play: One-Player - A word moves from right to left on the bottom row of
the display, then disappears. Type the correct letters to spell
the word, then press ENTER.
You have three chances to spell each word. If you enter a wrong
answer, it remains on the display to help you.
Two-Player: - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
PLURALS
Object: Give the plural form of a noun.
Play: One-Player - A noun (such as block) appears. Type its plural form
(blocks), then press ENTER.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
TENSES
Object: Give the present, past tense, or past participle of a verb.
Play: One-Player - Two forms of a verb (such as hop and hopped) appear.
Type the third form (hopped) and press ENTER.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
WORD SCRAMBLE
Object: Unscramble the letters to form a word.
Play: One-Player - A scrambled word appears. Type the letters in the
correct order, then press ENTER.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
MYSTERY WORD
Object: Guess the mystery word.
Play: One-Player - Dashes appear, each representing a letter in the
mystery word, along with a row of 10 pound signs (#), each
representing one chance. Type the letters which you think appear
in the word, in any order.
For each correct guess, the letter(s) you type replace the dash(es)
where it appears in the word. For each incorrect guess, a #
disappears. If you make 10 incorrect guesses, the round is over and
the Laptop tells you the word.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except the players take turns
typing in a word for the other to guess, beginning with the left
player.
Scoring: Yes.
COMPARATIVES
Object: Give the comparative or superlative form of an adjective.
Play: One-Player - Two adjective forms (such as spicy and spicier or
spiciest) appear with either the comparative or superlative form
missing. Type the missing form of the word and press ENTER.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
SYNONYMS
Object: Guess the synonym.
Play: One-Player - A word appears followed by a row of dashes, indicating
the number of letters in the solution, with the first letter given.
Fill in the blanks to spell a word which has the same meaning as
the displayed word and press ENTER.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
ANTONYMS
Object: Guess the antonyms.
Play: One-Player - A word appears, followed by a row of dashes,
indicating the number of letters in the solution, with the first
letter given. Fill in the blanks to spell a word which has the
opposite meaning from the displayed word and press ENTER.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
LETTER DROP
Object: Insert the given letter into its correct position in the word.
Play: One-Player - An incomplete word (such as _chos) appears with its
missing letter (in the example, a) above it. Press PREV or NEXT
to move the letter left or right. When the letter is above the
correct position, press ENTER. (In the example, the correct answer
is chaos.)
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
WORD IN WORD
Object: Remove a letter from the given word to form a new word.
Play: One-Player - A word appears. Move the arrow by pressing PREV or
NEXT until it is above the letter that you want to remove, then
press ENTER.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
LETTER FLIP
Object: Find the incorrect letter in each of two given words and flip the
letters to make the pair of words correct.
Play: One-Player - Two words with the same number of letters appear, with
one letter from each word in the other word. To make both words
correct, highlight the incorrect letters by using PREV and NEXT,
then press ENTER to flip them.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
WORD BUILDER
Object: Choose the correct group of letters to complete the word.
Play: One-Player - An incomplete word appears. Groups of letters scroll
above the incomplete word. When the group of letters which
correctly completes the word is directly above the space in the
word, press ENTER.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players press LEFT PLAYER
or RIGHT PLAYER instead of ENTER to respond.
Scoring: Yes.
SCRAMBLERS
Object: Rearrange the words to form a sentence.
Play: One-Player - A group of words appears in random order. Move the
cursor to the word you want to appear first in the sentence and
press ENTER. Repeat for the second word, third word, and so on.
The words appear on the bottom half of the display as you arranged
them.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
GRAMMAR QUIZ
Object: Find the incorrect word and change it to form a grammatically
correct sentence.
Play: One-Player - A sentence appears with one word containing a
grammatical error. Press PREV and NEXT until the incorrect word
flashes, then press ENTER. If you are right, three words appear.
Type the number of the word which makes the sentence grammatically
correct.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
ADDITION, SUBTRACTION, MULTIPLICATION, AND DIVISION
Object: Solve math problems.
Note: You have three chances to solve each problem.
Play: One-Player - A math problem appears. Type in the number which
makes the equation correct, then press ENTER.
Note: For addition and subtraction problems, you enter the numbers
from right to left. For multiplication and division problems
you enter the numbers from left to right.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
FRACTIONS/DECIMALS
Object: Make the fraction and the decimal equal.
Play: One-Player - A fraction problem appears. Type in the number which
makes the equation correct, then press ENTER.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
FRACTIONS/PERCENTAGES
Object: Make the fraction and the percentage equal.
Play: One-Player - A fraction problem appears. Type in the number which
makes the equation correct, then press ENTER.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
RATIOS
Object: Solve ratio problems.
Play: One-Player - One complete and one incomplete ratio appear. Type in
the missing terms to make both ratios equal and press ENTER.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
ALGEBRA
Object: Solve algebraic problems.
Play: One-Player - An algebraic equation appears. Solve for the variable,
type in the answer, then press ENTER.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
STORY PROBLEMS
Object: Find the answer to a math problem that is presented in word form,
rather than as a numerical equation.
Play: One-Player - Read each question and type in the number that solves
the problem, then press ENTER.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
SIGN SEEKER
Object: Find the appropriate sign to correctly complete the mathematical
equation.
Play: One-Player - A mathematical equation appears with one symbol
missing and a series of symbols (such as <, >, +, -, etc.)
scrolling above. When the correct symbol is directly above the
space in the equation, press ENTER. The symbol falls into place.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players press LEFT PLAYER
or RIGHT PLAYER instead of ENTER to respond.
Scoring: Yes.
TRIVIA (SCIENCE, ENGLISH, GEOGRAPHY, AND GENERAL)
Object: Answer the question.
Play: One-Player - Read each question, type in the correct answer, then
press ENTER.
Note: When a multiple choice answer is over 18 characters, ->
appears, to show that there is more to view. Press PREV or
NEXT to view the rest of, or move the cursor to, the answer.
Two-Player - Same as one-player, except players must press LEFT
PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER before answering.
Scoring: Yes.
WHAT AM I?
Object: Guess the word.
Note: Only one person at a time can play this game.
Play: A crossword puzzle appears. Press PREV or NEXT to move the cursor
to the next word you want to guess, then press ENTER to reveal the
word's clue. When you finish reading the clue, press ENTER again
to go back to the puzzle. Type the answer and press ENTER again.
Scoring: There are 10 words in each puzzle. You get 20 points for each
word you guessed correctly.
ALPHA PUZZLE
Object: Arrange a series of scrambled letters alphabetically.
Note: Only one person at a time can play this game.
Play: Two to four rows of scrambled letters appear with one empty space.
Use PREV, NEXT, /\, and \/ to shift letters back and forth, up and
down, until the entire series of letters is alphabetized.
Scoring: None for this activity.
NUMBER FLASH
Object: Remember a series of numbers.
Note: Only one person at a time can play this game.
Play: A single-digit number briefly appears. Type that number. The
first number and a second digit briefly appear. Type those two
numbers. Each time you correctly type a number, the series
reappears with a new number added. Continue this process until you
make a mistake or the round is over.
Scoring: Your score is based on the total number of digits you correctly
entered.
BASIC
Object: Run programs created in a computer language called BASIC. A
computer program is a series of instructions that tells a
computer what you want it to do, written in a language that the
computer can understand. You can find a book about BASIC in your
local library.
Note: You can only run one BASIC program at a time.
Play: Follow these steps:
1. Press BASIC. The display shows WELCOME! HAVE FUN! READY_
2. Type in your program line by line, pressing ENTER at the end of
each line. Each line consists of a line number followed by a
statement.
Notes: The Laptop does not understand the BASIC commands "DIR," "SAVE,"
"LOAD," and "FORMAT." If you use any of them in your program, the
Laptop displays Syntax Error.
Once you have entered some data in BASIC, Data exist, erase or
not? (Y/N) appears every time you return to BASIC from other
activities. Press Y (Yes) to erase the data or N (No) to keep it
in memory.
Scoring: None for this activity.
Sample Programs
Here is a program to make the Laptop count to 10.
1. Enter 10 FOR X = 1 TO 10 then press ENTER.
2. Enter 20 PRINT "X = " X then press ENTER.
3. Enter 30 NEXT X then press ENTER.
4. Enter 40 PRINT "I HAVE FINISHED COUNTING" then press ENTER.
5. Enter RUN and repeatedly press ENTER. The Laptop displays X=1, X=2,
X=3 up to X=10, then displays I HAVE FINISHED COUNTING.
You can change this program to make the Laptop count by twos to 20.
1. Enter NEW then press ENTER to erase the old program. READY appears.
2. Enter 10 FOR X = 2 TO 20 STEP 2 then press ENTER.
3. Enter 20 PRINT " X = " X then press ENTER.
4. Enter 30 NEXT X then press ENTER.
5. Enter 40 PRINT "I HAVE FINISHED COUNTING" then press ENTER.
6. Enter RUN and repeatedly press ENTER. The Laptop displays X = 2,
X = 4, X = 6 up to X = 20, then displays I HAVE FINISHED COUNTING.
READY appears.
Here is another program. It makes the Laptop count the characters in a
sentence.
1. Enter NEW then press ENTER to erase the old program.
2. Enter 10 PRINT "TYPE A SENTENCE" then press ENTER.
3. Enter 20 INPUT S$ then press ENTER.
4. Enter 30 PRINT "YOUR SENTENCE HAS "LEN(S$)" CHARACTERS" then press
ENTER.
5. Enter 40 INPUT "WANT TO TRY ANOTHER"; A$ then press ENTER.
6. Enter 50 IF A$ = "YES" THEN 10 then press ENTER.
7. Enter RUN. TYPE A SENTENCE appears.
8. Press ENTER. ? appears.
9. Type a sentence and press ENTER. YOUR SENTENCE HAS [underlined number]
CHARACTERS appears. Press NEXT to read the rest of the sentence.
10. Press ENTER. WANT TO TRY ANOTHER? Appears.
11. Enter YES and press ENTER. ? appears.
12. Type a sentence and press ENTER. YOUR SENTENCE HAS [underlined
number] CHARACTERS appears. Press NEXT to read the rest of the
sentence.
13. Press ENTER. WANT TO TRY ANOTHER? Appears.
14. Enter NO and press ENTER. READY appears.
SPELL CHECKER
Object: Check the spelling of words.
Note: Only one person at a time can use Spell Checker.
Play: Type the word the way you think it is spelled, then press ENTER.
If the spelling is correct, the display shows CORRECT!
If it is incorrect, the display gives a list of suggestions.
Press PREV and NEXT to search back and forth in the list. If END
OF LIST appears, press the other key.
If NO WORD FOUND! Appears, enter the word again using a different
spelling.
Or, if you know how many letters are in a word, but are not sure of the
exact spelling, press ? in place of the letters which you are not sure of.
For example, to find the spelling of "dictionary" if you only remember the
letters d, i, c, t, n, a, and y, type the word, substituting ? for the
letters you do not know (DICT??NA?Y), then press ENTER. The display shows
DICTIONARY.
Instead of ENTER:
To find an abbreviation for a word, use the period (.) key.
To find a contraction for words, use the apostrophe (') key.
To check the spelling of hyphenated words, use the hyphen (-) key.
Scoring: None for this activity.
