# 50818.
1. Press ON to turn on the Laptop.
2. Select a game by pressing that game's key on the keypad above the
number keys.
A short melody sounds. The display shows the name of the game, the
game's current level, your score, and the number of chances left. Then
the first problem appears.
Note: The Laptop automatically selects the easiest level (Level 1) and
one-player play each time you turn it on. To set the Laptop to give
you more challenging problems (Levels 2-4), see "Changing the
Level", below. To set the Laptop so two people can play at one
time, see "Playing with Two Players", below.
3. Press the key(s) which solve the problem, then press ENTER.
Note: If you enter an incorrect character (letter or number), press
ERASE to clear it from the display. All the characters (or in
some games, only the character you entered) disappear.
4. During most games, you get three chances to enter the correct answer.
When you enter the correct answer, the display shows a message such as
Yes! Very Good, Great, and so on.
During Store Problems, Science, English, Geography, General, and Alpha
puzzle, you get two chances to enter the correct answer. If you enter
a wrong answer on the first try, the display shows, Uh . . Oh! Last
Chance!
In games where you get three chances, the display shows, Uh . . Oh!
Try Again! If you enter a wrong answer on the first try, and Uh . .
Last Chance! On he second try.
If you enter a wrong answer on the last try in any game, the correct
answer appears.
If you do not know the correct answer (except in BASIC, Spell Checker,
and Calculator), you can press ANSWER to have the correct answer
appear.
5. After you enter a correct answer (or the Laptop tells you the answer),
the next problem appears.
The Laptop gives you 5 different problems during most one-player games,
and 10 different problems during most two-player games. After the last
problem in most games (except BASIC, Spell Checker, Calculator, Alpha
puzzle, and Number Flash), the Laptop shows your score with a comment
(such as FANTASTIC or WORK HARDER), then starts the game again with a
different set of problems.
6. To play a different game at any time, press another key on the keypad.
Changing The Level
You can play all the games (except BASIC, Spell Checker, and Calculator)
at four different levels. Level 1 is the easiest and Level 4 is the
hardest. The first time you turn on the Laptop and select a game, it
automatically selects Level 1. If you change the level, the Laptop
automatically uses the last-selected level the next time you turn it on.
Follow these steps to select a different level.
1. Press LEVEL. The display shows SELECT A LEVEL 1-4 and the current
level.
2. Press 1, 2, 3, or 4 to select the level you want. The display shows
the selected level.
Note: In most games (except BASIC, Spell Checker, Calculator, Alpha
puzzle, and Number Flash), the level automatically increases by one
if your score is 100 for three times in a row. In What Am I?, the
level automatically increases by one if your score is 200 for three
times in a row.
Playing With Two Players
You can play all the games (except What Am !?, Alpha puzzle, Number Flash,
BASIC, Spell Checker, and Calculator) alone or with a friend. The Laptop
automatically selects the one-player game. To select the two-player game,
follow these steps.
Note: After you select the two-player game, the Laptop automatically
selects the two-player game the next time you turn it on.
1. Start a game.
2. Press 2 PLAYERS. The display shows, RIGHT PLAYER PLEASE ENTER YOUR
NAME R. PLAYER.
3. Enter the name and press ENTER. The display shows LEFT PLAYER PLEASE
ENTER YOUR NAME L. PLAYER.
4. Enter the name and press ENTER. The display shows the level's number,
2 PLAYERS, and the players' scores.
During a two-player game, one player uses LEFT PLAYER and the other uses
RIGHT PLAYER. In most games (except BASIC, Spell Checker, Calculator,
Alpha puzzle, Number Flash, and What Am I?), a player must press his or
her button before the other player to enter an answer first. In Word
Builder, pressing LEFT PLAYER or RIGHT PLAYER enters an answer for that
player.
If either player enters a wrong answer, the Laptop shows the correct
answer. Each player has only one chance to answer, except in Mystery Word
(where each player continues guessing until he or she either solves the
problem or has 10 incorrect guesses).
To return to a one-player game, press 1 PLAYER.
Scoring
During most games, the Laptop awards or subtracts points for your answers
and keeps a running total in memory. Points are awarded differently for
one-player and two-player games.
For one-player games, the Laptop awards 20 points for a correct answer on
the first try, 15 points for a correct answer on the second try, and 10
points for a correct answer on the third try. No points are awarded for
incorrect answers. If the player presses ANSWER, no points are awarded
for that question.
Players get only two chances to enter the correct answer in Story Problem,
Science, English, Geography, General, and Alpha puzzle. In these games,
the Laptop awards 20 points for a correct answer on the first try and 15
points for a correct answer on the second try. If a player presses HELP,
the Laptop awards 15 points for a correct answer on the first try and 10
points for a correct answer and the second try.
Each player receives 100 points at the beginning of a two-player game. The
first player who enters the correct answer earns 10 points. If he or she
answers incorrectly, 10 points are deducted and the correct answer appears.
At the end of a one-player game, the score appears. At the end of a two
player game, the Laptop shows the left player's (L. PLAYER) score first,
then the right player's (R. PLAYER).
