Verifying Piece Positions
If you accidentally move the chess pieces, return them to their correct
positions as shown on the display.
Taking Back and Replaying Moves
This function lets you take back and replay any moves made by you or the
computer after the moves have been completed. You can take back up to 34
consecutive moves (your moves and the computer's moves).
1. Press FUNCTION. F flashes on the display.
2. Repeatedly press WHITE/- to view a game's next moves (after you have
taken back moves). The display shows the previous or next move you or
the computer made each time you press WHITE/- or BLACK/+.
Note: If you try to take back more than 34 moves or take back moves to
the beginning of the game, the computer sounds an error beep.
3. To continue the game at the position shown on the display, press
ENTER. Then reposition the chess pieces on the board to match the
display.
To continue the game without making any changes, press CLEAR.
Problem Setup
You can use the setup mode:
To erase, re-enter, or relocate pieces any time before or during a game.
To set up problems or puzzles for the computer to solve.
Note: If you have already started a game, you must press POSITION during
your turn to enter the setup mode. If you have not started a game,
you can press POSITION any time.
Before using this mode to create your own positions, familiarize yourself
with this procedure by setting up the board positions described in the
following examples.
Full Board Setup
In a full board problem setup, the computer records the positions you
enter into memory and assumes all other pieces remain in their initial
positions. You only need to go through these steps for pieces that you
want to remove or move from their initial positions.
Follow these steps to set up a game with most of the chess pieces in their
original positions.
1. Set up all of the pieces on the board.
2. Press CLEAR and ENTER at the same time.
3. Press POSITION. P -- appears on the display.
4. Press the piece you want to remove or move on its FROM square. The
piece's symbol and the FROM square flash alternately on the display,
and the piece symbol's icon (next to the flashing FROM square on the
display) appears instead of the chess clock icon.
5. If you want to remove the piece, press it on its FROM square again.
The piece symbol on the display disappears, and the display shows the
piece symbol's icon and --.
If you want to move the piece, move the piece to the desired square,
then press it on the square. The piece's symbol appears in the
location you chose on the display, and the piece's new location
appears on the display.
6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for any other pieces you want to move or remove.
If necessary, press WHITE/- or BLACK/+ to change to the side you want
to move first. Rank board light 1 lights to indicate it is white's
turn to move; rank board light 8 lights to indicate it is black's turn
to move.
7. When you finish setting up the pieces, press ENTER. The computer
beeps several times.
Note: If the computer beeps an error tone, one or more pieces were entered
illegally. To correct the set up, see "Correcting illegal Setups"
below.

it. The piece's symbol and its new location appear on the display.
7. Repeat Steps 5 - 6 for any other pieces you want to add.

Correcting Illegal Setups
To be legal, a setup must meet the following conditions.

The king for the side which is to move is not in check.
The total number of pieces in play is not more than the number of new
pieces at the start of a game.
There are no pawns on the first or eighth rank.
If the computer beeps an error tone, one of more pieces were set up
illegally. To correct the set up:
1. Set up a piece, remove the illegal piece, or replace an incorrectly
placed piece with the correct piece for that square. See "Adding
Pieces During a Game" above or "Removing Pieces During a Game."
2. When you finish setting up the pieces, press ENTER. The computer
beeps several times.
