Electronic Othello
(600-2660) Rules of the Game Faxback Doc. # 37983

BEFORE YOU START

Before you start playing the game, you should know the basic rules of
OTHELLO.

The object of the game is to fill up the squares by capturing your
opponent's pieces while your opponent tries to capture yours. You win if
you have more of your pieces on the board when it is filled.

The board is divided into 64 squares. Your pieces are black and your
opponent's are white.

At the beginning of the game, there are four pieces on the center of the
board - two of yours and two of your opponent's.

You and your opponent take turns placing pieces on the board. In each
move, you must capture one or more of your opponent's pieces between two
of your own.

You can capture any of your opponent's pieces that are between the piece
that you place and any of your other pieces on the board vertically,
horizontally, or diagonally in the same move. When you move, the computer
automatically turns all captured pieces into your color.

You cannot skip empty spaces. You must place a piece on a square right
next to a piece of your opponent's that you can capture. Otherwise, your
move is illegal. The computer sounds an error tone (if the sound is on)
if you press ENTER on an illegal square.

If you cannot capture any pieces, you lose your turn. You must press
PASS, and the turn goes to your opponent.

When all the squares are filled or neither player is able to move, the
game is over. The player with more pieces on the board wins.
