MTX-101 Marine Transceiver
(190-1002) Installation Faxback Doc. # 39644
CHOOSING A LOCATION
There are several things to consider when you choose a location for your
transceiver. Choose a location that
Is sturdy enough to support the transceiver.
Is not exposed to direct water spray or splash.
Is close to the power supply.
Lets you route the power cord away from the engine compartment and
walk-ways.
Is as close to the antenna as possible. See "Antenna Location."
Is shielded from direct sunlight.
Provides adequate ventilation for the heat-sink fins on the back of
the transceiver.
Is several feet away from the compass. If you plan to use a remote
speaker, also position it away from the compass.
Notes:
Your transceiver comes with the front panel angled up. However, you
can change the angle for the best view and operation from any mounting
position. See "Changing the Angle of the Front Panel."
The transceiver's speaker is on the bottom. If you mount the
transceiver with the bottom against the mounting surface, you might
want to connect an external speaker to the REMOTE speaker jack.
See "Connecting an Optional External Speaker."
CHANGING THE ANGLE OF THE FRONT PANEL
Follow these steps to change the angle of the front panel.
1. Remove the four screws from the speaker panel.
2. Turn over the transceiver. Then, lift off the cover panel.
3. Unplug the speaker connector.
4. Lift the chassis off the speaker panel.
5. Remove the top screw from each end of the front panel.
6. Loosen the center screw at each end of the front panel.
7. Tilt the front panel down, and insert the screw removed in Step 5 into
the lower hole at each end of the front panel.
8. Place the cover panel on the bottom of the transceiver, beginning at
the front and working toward the rear.
9. Plug in the speaker connector.
10. Place the speaker panel on top of the transceiver, and replace the
speaker panel's four screws.
MOUNTING THE TRANSCEIVER
1. With the mounting bracket attached to the transceiver, confirm that
the transceiver fits in the chosen location. Then, remove the
mounting bracket from the transceiver.
2. Use the mounting bracket as a template to mark the positions of the
mounting-screw holes.
3. In the marked positions, drill holes slightly smaller than the screws.
Be careful not to drill into or damage objects behind the mounting
surface.
4. Attach the bracket to the mounting surface using the large screws and
washers.
Note:
Because the composition of mounting surfaces can vary, the supplied
screws might not be correct. Use screws that are appropriate for your
boat's mounting surface.
5. Attach the transceiver to the bracket using the mounting knob.
6. Choose a convenient location near the transceiver for the microphone.
Then, use the microphone's mounting bracket as a template to mark the
mounting location.
7. Attach the bracket to the mounting surface using the small screws and
washers.
8. Insert the microphone cord's plug into the microphone jack on the
transceiver's front panel, and hang up the microphone on the holder.
INSTALLING THE ANTENNA
Follow the installation instructions supplied with the antenna.
Attach the antenna cable to the ANT terminal on the transceiver's back
panel.
Notes:
Do not shorten the cable supplied with the antenna.
If you make an extension for the antenna cable, use RG-8U or RG-8X
coaxial cable and shielded cable connectors.
If the cable passes over sharp or jagged edges, cover the edges with
heavy plastic tape.
CONNECTING AN OPTIONAL EXTERNAL SPEAKER
You can connect an optional external speaker to your transceiver to hear
the transceiver at a remote location. The speaker should have an 8-ohm
impedance rating and a 1/8-inch plug. Your local Radio Shack store sells
this type speaker. Insert the plug into the REMOTE jack on the
transceiver's back panel.
Note:
The internal speaker operates even if you connect an external speaker.
CONNECTING POWER
You can operate your transceiver from the boat's battery or any other
12-volt DC power supply.
1. Be sure that the transceiver's power is off.
2. Insert the supplied power cord's barrel plug into the DC power jack on
the transceiver's back panel.
3. Connect the red wire on the other end of the power cord to the
battery's positive (+) terminal and connect the black wire to the
battery's negative (-) terminal.
Notes:
If the cord passes over sharp or jagged edges, cover the edges with
heavy plastic tape.
If the power cord is not long enough, use 10-gauge wire to make an
extension. Be sure that you properly solder and seal the splice.
If the power cord is too long, cut off the excess wire.
Do not cut off the in-line fuse holder.
