INSTALLING BATTERIES
You can power the receiver from four AA batteries. For best performance,
we recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack's Cat. No. 23-552.
You can also power your DX-343 from standard AC power or your vehicle's
battery power. See "Optional Power Sources."
Follow these steps to install the batteries.
1. Open the battery compartment by pushing the cover downward.
2. Install four AA batteries in the battery compartment as indicated
by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked beside the battery compartment.
Note: Place the batteries on top of the lift-out ribbon so you can
easily lift them when it's time to replace them.
3. Replace the battery compartment cover.
After you install the batteries, the DX-343 is ready for operation and the
following readings appear on the display.
D M Y
0 1.0 1.92 0:00
Local
New York
Note: If the battery indicator lights on the display, replace the
batteries.
SETTING THE TIME
The DX-343 uses the world standard UTC (universal time coordinate
formerly called Greenwich mean time).
Note: If the radio's power is on, a beep sounds each time you press
a key. If the radio's power is off, the functions operate, but
the beep does not sound.
Setting Daylight Saving Time
You can set the time to either Daylight Saving or Standard time. Once the
time is set, you can switch to either time format without having to
manually reset the clock.
To set the clock for Daylight Saving time, press DAYLIGHT SAVING with
the tip of a ball-point pen or similar object until the daylight saving
light indicator appears on the display.
To set the clock for Standard time, press DAYLIGHT SAVING with the tip
of a ball-point pen or similar object until the daylight saving light
indicator disappears from the display.
Setting U.S. or European Calendar Mode
You can set the DX-343 to display the date in U.S. style (MONTH/DAY/YEAR)
or European style (DAY/MONTH/YEAR). Using a ball-point pen or similar
object, press DAY/MO. MO./DAY until the desired style appears on the
display.
Setting the LOCAL/HOME City
When you use the DX-343 the first time, you must select the country and
city for LOCAL/HOME time. This is important for correct coordination of
all other dates and readings.
Notes:
If you see the key light indicator on the display, move the key switch to
the down position to release the lock function. The key symbol disappears
from the display.
Before you begin, refer to "Listening Guide," Faxback Doc. # 39603 to find
your local city, or the city closest to your local city, from the
alphabetical worldwide listing.
Follow these steps to set the LOCAL/HOME city.
1. Press LOCAL/WORLD. WORLD appears and NEW YORK stops flashing on the
display.
2. Press down arrow TIME ADJUST/CITY SEARCH arrow up to scroll through
the alphabetical city menu. First, select the city whose first letter
is the same as the first letter is the same as the first letter of the
local city you selected (regardless of what country that city is in).
See "Listening Guide," Faxback Doc. # 39603 for the alphabetical city
menu.
3. Press SET to scroll through the alphabetical listing of world cities
until the desired local city appears.
4. Using a ball-point pen or similar object, press LOCAL SET to select
the local city. LOCAL and the local city's name appear on the display.
EXAMPLE: To select Houston:
1. Press LOCAL/WORLD until WORLD appears on the display.
2. Press arrow down TIME ADJUST/CITY SEARCH arrow up to select HALIFAX.
3. Press SET until HOUSTON appears on the display.
4. Press LOCAL SET until LOCAL and HOUSTON appear on the display.
Setting the Calendar and the LOCAL/HOME Time
Notes:
Before you set the local calendar and time, you must specify whether you
are using Daylight Saving or Standard time. (See Setting Daylight Saving
Time.")
Each time you press SET, you store the current calendar or time entry and
move to the next entry.
If you accidentally skip an entry, you must begin the entry sequence again.
If you fail to make an entry within 5 seconds after the beep, the DX-343
automatically stores the date and time displayed. To correct the entry,
you must start the entry sequence again.
1. After you have set the local city, press SET for about 5 seconds. A
beep sounds and the year flashes on the display.
2. Press down arrow TIME ADJUST/CITY SEARCH arrow up to set the year.
Press SET. The year entry is stored and the month flashes on the
display.
Repeat Step 2 to set the month, day, hour, and minutes. To confirm the
entries, press SET again. If you do not press SET to confirm the entries,
the DX-343 automatically stores them after about 5 seconds.
Setting a Second Time Zone
You can enter a second time zone (WORLD time) for easy reference. This
could be a shortwave station's time zone, a foreign business partner's
time zone, or the time zone in a country you are planning to visit. Once
the alternate time zone is stored, you can change from local to world time
with the touch of a single button.
After you set the LOCAL/HOME time, NEW YORK-U.S.A. is still stored under
WORLD time. Press LOCAL/WORLD until WORLD appears on the display. NEW
YORK, the New York time, and the time difference between New York and local
time appear on the display.
Note: Before you begin, refer to "Listening Guide," Faxback Doc. # 39603
to find the desired city, or the city closest to the desired city,
from the alphabetical worldwide listing.
Follow these steps to set a second time zone.
1. Press down arrow TIME ADJUST/CITY SEARCH arrow down to scroll through
the alphabetical city menu. Select the city whose first letter is the
same as the first letter of the city in the desired second time zone.
2. Press SET to scroll through the alphabetical listing of world cities
until the desired city appears.
EXAMPLE: To select Paris:
1. Press LOCAL/WORLD until WORLD appears on the display.

country name displays for five seconds then the city reappears on the
display.
Press LOCAL/WORLD to return to the LOCAL/HOME time zone.
Interchanging Local and World Time
It is easy to interchange LOCAL and WORLD time data. This is convenient
if you are taking a trip and would like your current location time to show
as LOCAL time. Using the previous example, it is possible to rearrange
the data so the time for PARIS, FRANCE appears as LOCAL time, and the
HOUSTON, U.S.A. time appears as WORLD time.
1. Press LOCAL/WORLD to set the time display to WORLD and press LOCAL/SET
once briefly with a ball-point pen or similar object. LOCAL appears
on the display.
2. Press LOCAL/SET a second time and hold it down for about 2 seconds.
LOCAL appears and HOME flashes on the display. A beep confirms the
changeover and HOME remains on the display. Your settings are now as
follows:
LOCAL 6:32 PARIS
WORLD 15:32 HOUSTON +9:00
The time of the country and place you are visiting is now LOCAL time for
the rest of your journey. You can check the time difference between your
current location and your home by pressing LOCAL/WORLD.
To reverse the setting, repeat steps 1 and 2.
Setting Memory Time Zones for Different Cities
You can store time zones for 9 different world cities in the DX-343's
memory locations.
Note: Before you begin, refer to "Listening Guide," Faxback Doc. # 39603

from the alphabetical worldwide listing.
Follow these steps to store memory time zones:
1. Press LOCAL/WORLD until WORLD appears on the display.
2. Press arrow down TIME ADJUST/CITY SEARCH arrow up to scroll through the
alphabetical listing of cities. Select the city whose first letter is
the same as the first letter of the city you want to store.
3. Press SET to scroll through the alphabetical listing of world cities
until the city you want to store appears.
4. Press MEMO until the memory location number (M1-M9) flashes on the
display. Press MEMO again and hold it down until the memory location
number disappears. The selected city's time zone is stored into that
memory location.
Note: If all 9 memory locations are full, MEMORY FULL flashes on the
display when you press MEMO.
Repeat Steps 2 through 4 to store additional memory time zones in memory
locations M2-M9.
Recalling Memory Time Zones
1. Press HOME/RECALL until WORLD appears on the display.

3. Press and hold MEMO until you hear a beep. MEMORY DELETED appears on
the display for a few seconds, then the next assigned memory time zone
setting appears.
To delete additional memory settings, repeat Steps 2 and 3.
OPTIONAL POWER SOURCES
You can power the DX-343 from standard AC power or your vehicle's battery
power.
Caution: Be sure to leave the batteries in the DX-343, even when using
optional power sources. This ensures that the stored calendar,
time, and alarm settings are saved.
USING AC POWER
You can power the receiver from a standard AC power outlet. This requires
an optional AC adapter (Cat. No. 273-1454).
Caution: Using an adapter other than the one recommended could permanently
damage the receiver or the adapter.
To use AC power, insert the adapter's small plug into the receiver's DC 6V
jack. Then plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet.
Note: When you connect the optional AC adapter, the receiver automatically
disconnects the internal batteries.
USING YOUR VEHICLE'S BATTERY POWER
With an optional DC adapter, such as Cat. No. 14-844, you can power the
receiver from your vehicle's battery.
Cautions:
You must use a DC adapter that supplies 6 volts with the center tip set
to negative. It must deliver at least 300 milliamps, and its plug must
properly fit the receiver's DC 6V jack. Using an adapter that does not
meet these specifications could damage the receiver or the adapter.
Your vehicle must have a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system.
To protect your vehicle's electrical system, always plug the adapter
into the receiver before you plug it into the cigarette-lighter socket,
and always unplug the adapter from the cigarette-lighter socket before
you unplug it from the receiver.
Follow these steps to connect the DC adapter.
1. Set the adapter's 6V/9V selector to 6V.
2. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the receiver's DC 6V jack.
3. Plug the other end of the adapter into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter
socket.
Note: Connecting the DC adapter automatically disconnects the internal
batteries.
