DX-342 9-Band Portable Receiver
(200-0217) Operation Faxback Doc. # 39591
TUNING THE RECEIVER
You can tune to shortwave (SW) broadcasts, FM, or medium wave (MW)
broadcasts. (In the United States, we commonly call the MW band the AM
band.)
Follow these steps to tune the receiver.
Warning: Turn VOL (volume) to its lowest setting before you turn on the
receiver.
1. Press FM or AM/SW to turn on the receiver and select the band. An
indicator lights above the band selector.
2. Set the AM/SW BAND selector to AM, or set it to 1 through 7 to select
the shortwave band.
The band indicator on the front of the receiver shows the frequency
range (and meter equivalent) for each shortwave band. For example,
set the AM/SW BAND selector to 1 to select the 49-meter shortwave
band.
This control has no effect if you turn to FM.
3. Adjust VOL.
4. Turn the TUNING dial to select the frequency.
The green TUNING indicator lights when you tune to a station.
LISTENING TO FM
When you listen to FM stereo stations, do the following.
1. Connect stereo headphones. See "Using Headphones."
2. Set MONO/STEREO to STEREO.
3. Fine-tune the frequency until the STEREO indicator lights steadily.
For weak FM stereo stations, set MONO/STEREO to MONO. The signal is
mono (monaural), but the sound might improve.
If you set MONO/STEREO to STEREO, the STEREO indicator lights any time
you tune to an FM stereo station. However, the receiver's built-in
speaker is mono, so you can hear stereo sound only when you connect
stereo headphones.
ADJUSTING THE ANTENNA
For best reception, adjust the antenna as follows.
FM: Fully extend the telescoping antenna and swivel it for the best
reception.
SW: Fully extend the telescoping antenna and point it straight up.
MW (AM): The receiver uses an internal antenna. Rotate the receiver for
the best reception.
USING HEADPHONES
Listening through headphones has the following advantages:
Lets you hear stereo sound when you tune to FM stereo stations
Makes it easier to fine-tune - especially for weak stations
Lets you listen without disturbing others
Be sure you select stereo headphones with a 1/8-inch plug. Radio Shack
stores sell a wide selection of stereo headphones.
To listen through headphones, plug them in to the headphones jack. This
automatically disconnects the built-in speaker.
Warning: Turn VOL (volume) to its lowest setting before you put on
headphones. After you put on headphones, adjust the volume.
Hearing Comfort and Your Health
Do not listen at extremely high volume levels, especially when you use
headphones. Extended, high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing
loss.
Traffic Safety
Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle.
This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas.
Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear some outside sounds
when you listen at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic
hazard.
USING THE SAFETY SWITCH
This feature helps prevent you from accidentally turning the receiver on or
off or changing the band.
Set the switch to SAFETY to lock the POWER OFF and FM/AM-SW controls. Set
the switch to the other position to unlock the controls.
