2 Channel VHF FM Transceiver
(190-1201) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 39583
POWERING THE TRANSCEIVER
You can power your transceiver from the supplied rechargeable battery pack.
Using the Battery Pack
Slide the battery pack onto the transceiver, as shown, and charge the
battery to use it.
To remove the battery pack, press down and slide RELEASE in the direction
of arrow, then slide the battery pack off.
Follow these steps to check the battery power:
1. Rotate VOLUME clockwise to turn on the transceiver.
2. Press the PUSH TO TALK button. If the BUSY/TX/BATT Indicator
lights red, there is sufficient battery power. If the indicator
lights yellow, you need to recharge the battery pack as described
under "Charging the Battery Pack."
Charging the Battery Pack
You can recharge the battery pack using the supplied battery charger.
Turn off the transceiver or remove the battery pack from the transceiver
before you charge the battery pack. Plug the charger's barrel plug into
the CHG jack on the side of the battery pack, and connect the charger to a
standard AC outlet.
Notes:
Do not operate the transceiver while you recharge the battery pack.
The battery pack is typically fully discharged when you first get it.
You must charge the battery pack before you use the transceiver.
Charging time is 14 to 16 hours the first time. Subsequent chargings
take about 14 hours.
Nickel-cadmium batteries deliver more power if you occasionally let
them completely discharge. To do this, use the transceiver until
BUSY/TX/BATT indicator is yellow when you press the PUSH TO TALK
button. Then, fully charge the battery pack. If you do not
occasionally do this, the batteries can temporarily lose the ability
to deliver full power.
Cautions:
To prevent permanent battery power loss, never charge the batteries
in an area where the temperature is above about 80 degrees F. The
charger does not operate at all at temperatures below 32 degrees F or
above 113 degrees F.
Never use any other charger to recharge the transceiver's battery
pack. This could permanently damage your transceiver or the battery
pack.
CONNECTING THE ANTENNA
Attach the flexible antenna to the antenna jack on top of the transceiver.
Place the slot in the antenna's connector over the protrusion on the
antenna jack, and turn the antenna's connector until the antenna locks into
place.
The antenna jack (BNC-type) on your transceiver makes it easy to use with a
variety of antennas. The supplied antenna can be removed if you wish to
try a different one. You can attach an external mobile antenna or an
outdoor base antenna.
WARNING:
When installing or removing a base station antenna, use extreme caution.
If it starts to fall, let it go! It could contact overhead power lines.
If the antenna touches the power line, contact with the antenna, mast,
cable, or guy wires can cause electrocution and death! Call the power
company to remove the antenna. Do not attempt to do so yourself.
USING AN EARPHONE
For private listening or to hear better when there are other noises, plug
an earphone into the EAR jack on the top of the transceiver. This
disconnects the speaker. We recommend Radio Shack's monaural earphone
(Cat. No. 33-175).
USING AN EXTERNAL MICROPHONE
An external microphone (Cat. No. 19-310) can make it easier to use the
transceiver when you clip it to your belt. Plug the microphone cable's
connector into the jacks on top of the transceiver. This disconnects the
transceiver's speaker. The transceiver's internal push-to-talk button
still works.
CHANGING OR INSTALLING CRYSTALS
Your transceiver comes with a pair of crystals installed in Channel A for
operation on 151.625. You can order crystals from your local Radio Shack
store for Channel B or as replacements for Channel A. Be sure to specify
the transceiver's catalog number - 19-1201.
You must request a frequency assignment from NABER (National Association of
Business and Educational Radio) before ordering crystals. Call NABER at
800-759-0300 (in VA, call 703-739-0300). They will advise you of the
information they require, as well as the current fees. You will then send
your FCC Form 574 to NABER. They will assign a frequency and forward the
application to the FCC.
While your transceiver can operate from 151.125 to 152.125 MHz, it is
adjusted to operate from 151.145 to 151.955 MHz per the FCC assigned
frequency table. We recommend you select a frequency within this range.
To determine the crystals you need, use the following formulas:
Transmit Crystal = Operating Frequency / 8
Receive Crystal = (Operating Frequency - 10.7 MHz) / 4
For example, to transmit and receive on 151.455 MHz, specify a transmit
crystal of 18.931875 (151.455 MHz / 8) and a receive crystal of 35.18875
MHz (151.455 - 10.7 MHz / 4).
Channel A crystals are soldered in, and can only be replaced by a
qualified technician.
We recommend you only order crystals for this transceiver through your
local Radio Shack store. If you do purchase from another source, the following information might help you receive a crystal that works in this
transceiver:
Package Type: HC-50/T
Load Capacitance: 20 pF
Follow these steps to install crystals.
1. Remove the battery pack.
2. Loosen the four screws on the battery latch plate.
3. Remove the four screws from the transceiver's back and remove the back
cover.
4. Install the new crystals in the sockets. Be sure to install the receive
and transmit crystals in the correct sockets, as shown.
5. Replace the back cover and secure it with the four screws.
6. Tighten the four screws on the battery latch plate.
