PRS-101 10-Channel GMRS Transceiver
(190-0901) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 31387

Before you use the transceiver, you must be properly licensed by the FCC.

CHARGING THE BATTERY PACK

You must charge the battery pack with the supplied battery charger before
you use it the first time, and whenever the battery becomes low.

To attach the battery pack, slide it onto the transceiver. To remove the
battery pack, press down and slide the release button in the direction of
the arrow, then slide off the pack.

Follow these steps to charge the battery pack.

1. If the transceiver is on, turn V counterclockwise to turn it off.

2. Plug the charger's barrel plug into the CHG jack on the side of the
battery pack, then connect the charger to a standard AC outlet.

NOTES: Charging time is 14 to 16 hours.

When the battery weak symbol battery flashes on the display, you
need to charge the battery pack.

CAUTION: To prevent permanent battery power loss, never charge the
batteries in an area where the temperature is above about 80
degrees F. The charger does not operate at all at temperatures
below 32 degrees or above 113 degrees F.

Never use any other charger to recharge the transceiver's battery
pack. This could permanently damage your transceiver or the
          battery pack.

IMPORTANT: The transceiver uses a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery
pack. At the end of the battery pack's useful life. It must
be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local,
county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for
information on recycling or disposal programs in your area.
Some options that might be available are: municipal curb-
side collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling
            collection centers, and mail-back programs.

USING THE BELT CLIP

To easily carry the transceiver on your belt, attach the belt clip by
clipping it onto the tab on the back of the transceiver. To remove
the belt clip, lift up the tab and slide off the clip.

USING AN EARPHONE

To listen privately or to hear better in a noisy area, you can plug a
monaural earphone (Cat. No. 33-175) into the EAR jack on top of the
transceiver. This automatically disconnects the speaker.

USING AN EXTERNAL MICROPHONE

An external microphone (Cat. No. 19-310) can make it easier to use the
transceiver when you clip it to your belt. Plug the microphone cable's
connector into the external microphone/speaker jacks on top of the
transceiver. This automatically disconnects the transceiver's speaker.

NOTE: The transceiver's internal push-to-talk button still works with
       an external microphone attached.

STORING GMRS 1 AND GMRS 2 CHANNEL FREQUENCIES

Your transceiver comes with a preset emergency frequency (462.675 MHz),
seven preset interstitial frequencies, and two selectable frequencies
(GMRS 1 and GMRS 2) preset to 462.550 MHz. You can store the frequencies
in GMRS 1 and GMRS 2, however you must have an FCC license before you use
the transceiver. The license authorizes you to operate on the emergency
frequency, all seven interstitial frequencies, and one or two main GMRS
frequencies. Submit Form 574 and request one or two of the following
frequencies.

Reference Number Frequency MHz

1 462.550
2 462.575
3 462.600
4 462.625
5 462.650
6 462.700
7 462.725

Follow these steps to store your licensed frequency(ies) into the
transceiver.

NOTES: According to FCC Rules, only the person who is issued the station
license can store the transceiver's frequency.

Double check all steps after performing them. Setting and
operating the transceiver to a frequency for which you are not
        licensed could result in lines.

If you do not press a button for about 5 minutes, the transceiver
automatically returns to the emergency channel.

1. Rotate V counterclockwise to turn off the transceiver. Then remove
    the battery pack.

2. Remove the four screws from the back cabinet.

3. Lift up the back cabinet and put it aside. You can now locate the set
button through the hole in the clear cover.

4. Replace the battery pack.

5. Rotate V clockwise to turn on the transceiver and be sure it does not
receive any interference. Then rotate S fully clockwise and ensure
you are not receiving a transmission before you proceed.

6. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to press and hold the set button for
about 2 seconds. The display flashes and the transceiver sounds a
long beep. Then the transceiver displays GMRS 1 and SET.

7. To change the frequency stored in GMRS 1, press UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW
to select the reference number that corresponds to your licensed
    frequency.

NOTE: If you are licensed for two GMRS frequencies, store one of the
frequencies, in GMRS 1 and the other in GMRS 2. If you are
licensed for only one frequency, store it in both GMRS 1 and 2.

8. Press PTT once to store the frequency for GMRS 1. GMRS 2 and SET
    appear on the display.

9. If you are licensed for a second frequency, press UP ARROW or DOWN
ARROW to select the reference number that corresponds to the second
frequency. If you are not licensed for a second frequency, set GMRS
2 to the same frequency as GMRS 1.

10. Press PTT once to store the frequency for GMRS 2.

11. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to press the set button. The
display flashes and the transceiver sounds a long beep. The
transceiver tunes to the emergency channel and display EMERG.

12. Replace the back cabinet and secure it with the four screws.

CONNECTING THE ANTENNA

Attach the flexible antenna to the antenna jack on top of the transceiver.
Place the slots in the antenna's connector over the tabs on the antenna
jack, squeeze the base of the antenna, and push down and turn the antenna's
connector clockwise until the antenna locks into place.

Instead of the supplied antenna, you can connect an optional antenna. The
BNC antenna jack on your transceiver makes it easy to connect a variety of
antennas, such as an external mobile antenna or an outdoor base antenna.

CAUTION: Never connect an antenna that is not specifically tuned for the
          transceiver's frequency range.
