The Compaq 1267 comes supplied with a red CD labeled as follows:

QUICK RESTORE
COMPAQ PRESARIO MODEL 1255/1260/1266/1267
FOR DISTRIBUTION ONLY WITH A NEW PC
VERSION 1.00 1998 COMPAQ COMPUTER CORPORATION

This can be used to access the CAB files, reinstall drivers, or restore
all of the software that was originally preinstalled.

To perform a full reinstallation, shut down Windows and power off the
computer.  Insert the Quick Restore CD into the CD-ROM drive, and power
the computer back on.

When the computer boots up, you will see the notice below:

  OTHER THAN SPECIFIFIED ABOVE IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED AND WILL VIOLATE THE
  MANUFACTURER'S ORIGINAL SOFTWARE AGREEMENT.

  PRESS ENTER TO CONTINUE OR ESC TO EXIT.

Press the <ENTER> key.  A new notice will appear:

  WELCOME TO COMPAQ QUICKRESTORE.  THIS UTILITY IS SUPPLIED BY COMPAQ TO
  PROVIDE AN EASY WAY TO RESTORE THE SOFTWARE ORIGINALLY PREINSTALLED ON
  YOUR COMPAQ PERSONAL COMPUTER.

  !!!   CAUTION   !!!
  QUICKRESTORE DESTROYS ALL DATA ON YOUR HARD DISK.  IF YOU HAVE ADDED
  PERSONAL FILES OR SOFTWARE THAT YOU DO NOT WANT TO LOSE, COPY THEM TO A
  BACKUP MEDIA BEFORE PROCEEDING.

  PRESS ENTER TO CONTINUE OR ESC TO EXIT.

Press the <ENTER> key.

The screen will then read:

  COPYING FACTORY IMAGE TO SYSTEM SAVE PARTITION

and a series of gauges and percentages will appear at the bottom of the
screen.

After a time, this will be replaced by a graphic screen, also featuring
gauges and percentages.  Once the gauges reach 100%, the computer will
shut down automatically.

It will then restart, and the CD-ROM drive will kick open.  The following
message will appear on the screen:

Remove the CD and press <ENTER>.

The initial Windows 98 Startup banner will appear, and the computer will
boot to a Windows 98 DeskTop. A Compaq Quick Restore dialog box will then
appear, indicating that files are being unzipped.

After the required files are unzipped, the computer will reboot again.
The Windows 98 startup banner will appear again.  Then the graphic screen
featuring gauges and percentages will appear again.

Once the gauges get to 100%, the following message will appear:

  PROCESS COMPLETE PRESS "CTRL+ALT+DEL" TO RESTART

Press <CTRL> + <ALT> + <DEL>.  The computer will reboot.

The Windows 98 Startup screen will appear again.  Then the following
message will appear:

  HIBERNATION FILE CREATED - PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT

The Windows 98 Startup screen will appear again.  The dialog box below
will appear:

Type the user name into the name field, then press <ENTER> or click on
[NEXT].

The Windows 98 License Agreement will appear.  Click on "I ACCEPT THE
AGREEMENT", then press <ENTER> or click [NEXT].  You will be asked to
input the Product ID Code which is located on the Certificate Of
Authenticity glued to the front of the Windows 98 Manual.
(Example: RD2XX-D9WD4-YVYGQ-7MB4B-HMJ23)

Type in the code, then press <ENTER> or click [NEXT].

A dialog box asking the you to select your time zone.  Click on the down
arrow in the time zone field, then scroll to the time zone desired.  Click
on [CLOSE] or press <ENTER>.

The "ADD PRINTER WIZARD" will appear.  If your printer came with Windows
98 driver diskettes, click on [CANCEL], otherwise, click on [NEXT].
Select the manufacturer and model of the printer that you intend to use,
then click on [NEXT].

If you selected a printer, you will be requested to select a printer port.
The default is LPT1:.  Click on [NEXT] or press <ENTER> to continue.

You will be asked to supply a name for your printer.  Simply click on
[NEXT] or press <ENTER> to leave it as the default name.

You will be prompted to print a test page.  Select either YES or NO, then
click on [FINISH].

An extremely loud pseudo jazz song will start playing.  The screen below
will appear:

SOUND CHECK

IF YOU CAN HEAR THE MUSIC, PRESS THE "Y" KEY FOR YES.

IF YOU CAN'T HEAR THE MUSIC, PRESS THE "N" KEY FOR NO.

This may be a good time to adjust the volume.  The volume controls are
located below the keyboard, directly below the mouse/touchpad scroll
buttons.

Once you get the volume to a comfortable listening level, press "Y" to
indicate that you hear music.

A "Welcome To The Compaq Presario" movie will begin, congratulating you
for making the choice to purchase a Compaq computer.  You can press the
<ESC> key to exit out of the movie.

The Compaq Registration screen will appear.  You can either fill it out to
electronically register the machine with Compaq (if your modem is
connected), fill it out, print it, and mail the registration, or click
[CANCEL].  If you select [CANCEL], you will be periodically reminded to
register.

Windows 98 is now entirely reinstalled.  The Windows 98 DeskTop will now
appear.
