MMX Technology
The Aptiva C8H (S8H) features MMX technology, Intel's newest processor
enhancement that's changing the face of the multimedia and communications
world. MMX technology brings PCs to a level of multimedia performance and
capability beyond anything your customers have experienced before. They'll
get vivid sound, rich colors, realistic 3D rendering, smooth animation and
video.
The Pentium processor with MMX technology includes all of the standard
Pentium processor features, plus improvements that provide a better,
smoother, more realistic multimedia experience. Industry standard
benchmarks show that a Pentium processor with MMX technology makes a PC run
10-20% faster than an ordinary Pentium processor-based system at the same
clock speed.
The Pentium processor with MMX technology boasts three primary
architectural design enhancements:
New Instructions - Intel engineers have added 57 powerful new instructions
specifically designed to manipulate and process video, audio and graphical
data efficiently. These instructions are oriented to the highly parallel,
repetitive sequences often found in multimedia operations.
SIMD - Many of today's multimedia and communication applications use
repetitive loops that occupy 10 percent or less of the overall application
code, yet account for up to 90 percent of the execution time. Through a
process called Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD), one instruction can
perform the same function on many pieces of data (like a drill sergeant
telling an entire platoon, "About face," rather than commanding each
individual soldier one at a time). SIMD allows the chip to reduce compute
intensive loops common with video, audio, graphics and animation.
More Cache - Intel has doubled on-chip cache size to 32K on the Intel
Pentium processor with MMX technology. Now, more instructions and data can
be stored on the chip, reducing the number of times the processor has to
access slower, off-chip memory areas for information.
Voice Enabled Home Director
Only Home Director with IBM Voice Type commands lets your customers control
appliances, audio/visual equipment, and lights by speaking to the Aptiva,
without having to learn complex keyboard commands. Home Director adjusts
to the user's voice, so the user can speak at a natural tone and rate.
Home Director works with motion detectors and alarms from existing security
systems, and can be expanded to include up to 256 devices. It's also fully
Plug 'n Power compatible, so be sure and ask what lights and appliances
your customers will want to control, so you can sell them the modules
they'll need with their Aptiva!
Home Director's Routine feature allows Home Director to learn when and how
your customers use lights, audio/video equipment, and appliances. Then,
while they're away from home, Home Director uses random routines to give
the house a true "lived-in" appearance, without multiple or confusing
timers. Home Director's True Dawn and Dusk feature even calculates local
sunrise and sunset times automatically.
With Home Director, your customers can wake each morning to a fresh pot of
coffee and the morning news on TV or radio in a bright kitchen, or set the
dishwasher or washing machine to run while they're at work. With Home
Director, they can even control heating and air conditioning settings,
to wake or return home to the climate they want while saving on energy
bills.
