INSTALLING WINDOWS 95 ON THE IBM APTIVA M50/M30

Place the IBM Aptiva Windows 95 Install diskette in the floppy drive and
turn on your computer.  The following message will be displayed:

Your computer's BIOS must be updated to fully support Windows **95

(The current BIOS is BGOUS1C.  The BIOS date is 8-2-95)

Would you like to update the computer BIOS now?

Answer Yes to restart your computer and run the BIOS update process.
Answer No to go to the initial menu.  Press Y for yes or press N for no.

A message will now appear like the following:

This procedure will take 2 minutes.  The computer will restart when the
update is complete. 

Then the following message appears:

The BIOS update is complete.  Leave the diskette in drive A: and restart
your computer.

A menu appears like the following:

1)Install Windows 95
2)Remove Windows 95
3)Restore Original Software
4)Exit Program

Select option 1 to install Windows 95.

The following is what appears on the screen:

This option will install Microsoft Windows 95 on your IBM Aptiva personal
computer.  Windows 95 will replace your current operating system.

Once you start using Windows 95, you will find there are a few changes.  To
learn how to start programs and work with windows, take the Windows 95 Tour
that is displayed on the Windows 95 welcome screen.  Press Enter to
continue

Before you decide to install Windows 95 on your Aptiva computer, review
this list of key changes.  If you decide not to install Windows 95, press
ESC.

- Windows 3.1 program groups are called "folders" in Windows 95.  The
  folders will not be open on the desktop.

- To start programs in Windows 95, click on the start button in the bottom
  left corner of the desktop

- The Windows 3.1 Personal Desktop program on some models will not work in
  Windows 95.  To set up different configurations for different users, use
  the passwords program in the Windows 95 Control Panel.

- For models that have the IBM Information Super Highway program, the
  Internet connection will not work in Windows 95.  To access the internet
  use the on-line services.

- On some models the virus checking program in Custom Tools will not work
  in Windows 95.  We recommend that you purchase a virus checking program
  for Windows 95.

- For models that have the FaxWorks Voice program, some of its features
  will not work in Windows 95.  You can obtain a free Faxworks Voice Update
  from the IBM PC Company Bulletin Board.

- If your computer has the Display Select program in Custom Tools, it will
  not work in WIN 95.  To set up your display, start the Windows 95 Control
  Panel and double click on Display.

- Windows 95 comes with an Auto Play feature that allows you to insert a CD
  in the CD-ROM drive and have it play automatically.  Your system can
  automatically enter low power states, such as standby and Auto Power Off,
  if you enable Auto Play, your system can no longer enter low power
  states.

- Backup programs for Windows 3.1, like the Backup and Restore program in
  Custom Tools, will not back up files correctly in Windows 95.  To back up
  files, use the Windows 95 backup program.

- Other programs that you may have added, like screen savers or games, may
  not work in Windows 95.  If you need additional help with these programs,
  please contact the company that produced the program.

The Windows 95 Installation will take approximately one hour depending on
the options you select to install and the speed of your computer.  Plan
enough time for the whole process since Windows 95 installation will prompt
you for input several times 

You will then receive a message:

Press ENTER to Continue

The following appears on the screen:

OS/2 Warp has been detected on your IBM APtiva personal computer.  OS/2
Warp and Windows 95 are not compatible operating systems.  The Windows 95
install program will remove all OS/2 system files and directories.

IMPORTANT:

If you have any personal files in the OS/2 directories, you should create a
directory and move the files to the new directory before you install WIN
95.

When you press Y, the following appears:

The Aptiva Software will be updated for Windows 95.  This process will take
approximately seven minutes.  Insert the Aptiva Software CD.  Press ENTER
to continue ESC to cancel.  Once you press ENTER, it will inflate the files
from the CD to the harddrive.

You will then be prompted to:

Insert the WIN95 Upgrade CD.
Press Enter to continue or ESC to cancel.
After pressing Enter, you will see:

Leave the WIN95 upgrade CD in the CD-ROM drive and remove the diskette from
drive A:.  The computer is now ready to install WIN95 Press Enter to
continue.

The system will reboot and you will see the Windows 95 Setup Screen:

Welcome to setup.  It will take 30 to 60 minutes to perform a routine check
of the system.  You can click on Continue or Exit Setup.

The next screen is the License agreement.  Click on Continue.  Then click
on Next.  It will then ask you to choose the directory for installation and
click on Next.  You will then be prompted to save system files, Yes, Click
on Next.  Select the Typical Installation and then click on Next.  You will
then be prompted to input the Product ID # for Windows 95 off of the
Certificate of Authenticity located on the front cover of the Windows 95
upgrade book that came with the upgrade.

The next screens prompt you to input the User Info.  The default name is
IBM Aptiva Customer.  Input information and select Next.  From this point
on, it is a standard Windows 95 install with the basic installation screens
you are used to.

You now have successfully installed the Windows 95 upgrade on the Aptiva.
