The Radio Shack SCR-50 Portable AM/FM Stereo Cassette Recorder is an
example of superior design and craftsmanship.  The following suggestions
will help you care for the SCR-50 so you can enjoy it for years.

    Keep the SCR-50 dry.  If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately.  Some
    liquids contain minerals that corrode the electronic circuits.

    Handle the SCR-50 gently and carefully.  Dropping it can damage its
    circuit boards and case and can cause it to work improperly.

    Keep the SCR-50 away from dust and dirt, which can cause premature
    wear of parts.

    Use only fresh batteries of the recommended size and type.  Never
    leave dead or weak batteries in the SCR-50.  They may leak chemicals
    that can damage it.

    Occasionally wipe the SCR-50 with a damp cloth to keep it looking new.
    Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to
    clean the SCR-50.

Modifying or tampering with the SCR-50's internal components can cause a
malfunction and might invalidate the SCR-50's warranty and void your
FCC authorization to operate it.  If the SCR-50 is not performing as it
should, take it to your local Radio Shack store for assistance 

CLEANING THE TAPE HANDLING PARTS

Clean the tape handling parts after about 20 hours of use.

Follow these steps to clean the tape handling parts

1.  Set TAPE/RADIO to TAPE.

2.  Press and hold down the erase protection tab sensor and press RECORD. 
    This exposes the record/play head and erase head.

3.  Use a cotton swab dipped with tape head cleaning solution or denatured
    alcohol to gently clean the capstan, pinch roller and the play/record
    and erase heads.

Tape head cleaning supplies are available at your local Radio Shack store.
Do not use the combination head cleaner/demagnetizer kit in this unit.

DO NOT DEMAGNETIZE THE ERASE HEADS

The SCR-50 uses a permanent magnet erasing system that ensures recording
clarity and high-frequency response.  Unlike other erasing systems, the
erasing system does not accumulate residual magnetism that interferes with
recording.

Do not attempt to demagnetize the erase head.  Doing so could damage the
SCR-50.
