Warning: To protect your hearing, set VOLUME LEFT and RIGHT to their
lowest settings before you turn on the radio.

1. Set FUNCTION to FM STEREO.

2. Rotate TUNING to tune to the desired station.

3. Adjust VOLUME LEFT and RIGHT to a comfortable listening level and to
the desired balance between the speakers.

4. Set E-BASS to IN to enhance the low frequency sounds. Set E-BASS to
    OUT for normal bass sound.

separation of FM stereo broadcasts. Set it to OUT for normal sound
    separation.

Notes: The SCR-55's AM/FM radio has two antennas. The AM antenna is
built-in. For the best AM reception, rotate the SCR-55. For the
best FM reception, fully extend and adjust the telescoping
        antenna.

Fine tune FM stereo stations until the FM STEREO indicator lights
        steadily.

To improve the reception of a weak FM station, set FUNCTION to FM.
The signal changes from stereo to monaural (mono).

CASSETTE OPERATION

LOADING A CASSETTE

1. Press STOP/EJECT on either Tape 1 or Tape 2 to open the cassette
    compartment's door.

2. Use your finger or a pencil to turn the cassette's hub and take up
    any slack.

Note: Avoid touching the tape. Fingerprints attract dust and dirt.

3. Load the cassette tape with its open edge facing up and the desired
tape side facing you. To hear the entire tape, be sure the tape's
full reel is on the right. If necessary, press REWIND to rewind the
tape. The deck automatically stops when it completely rewinds the
    tape.

4. Gently close the compartment.

PLAYING A CASSETTE TAPE

Warning: To prevent possible ear injury and hearing loss, turn both
volume controls to their lowest settings before you begin
playing a cassette tape. After the tape begins to play, adjust
the volume to a comfortable listening level.

1. Set FUNCTION to TAPE.

2. Press PLAY on the deck you loaded the cassette tape into.

3. Adjust VOLUME LEFT and right to a comfortable listening level and to
the desired balance between the speakers.

4. Set E-BASS to IN to enhance the low frequency sounds. Set E-BASS to
    OUT for normal bass sound.

5. Set STEREO WIDE on the back of the SCR-55 to IN to enhance the stereo
separation of stereo recordings. Set it to OUT for normal separation.

6. Press STOP/EJECT to stop the tape.

Press STOP/EJECT again to open the cassette compartment. Then
    remove the cassette tape.

Notes: The deck automatically stops when the tape reaches the end.

To play a tape's other side, remove it, turn it over, and insert
        in again.

After you play a cassette tape several times, the tape might
become tightly wound on either hub. This can cause distortion.
To restore the correct tension, fast-forward through the entire
cassette and then completely rewind it.

Using Rewind and Fast-Forward

Press REWIND or FAST-F to quickly move the tape to an earlier or later
selection. Press PLAY to resume play.

Using Pause

Press PAUSE to temporarily stop tape play. Press PAUSE again to resume
play.

Using Consecutive Playback

Follow these steps to play one side of a cassette in Tape 1 immediately
followed by one side of a cassette in Tape 2.

1. Load the cassette you want to play first in Tape 1 and the one you
want to play second in Tape 2.

2. Press PLAY on Tape 1.

3. On Tape 2, press PAUSE then PLAY. This cassette begins when the
    cassette in Tape 1 ends.

4. To stop continuous play before the tape player stops automatically,
press STOP on both Tape 1 and 2.

RECORDING AND DUBBING

You can record from the radio, dub (copy) a cassette tape, or use the
built-in microphone to make a live recording.

Notes: Tape quality greatly affects the quality of the recording. We
        recommend Extended-Range or Low-Noise Type 1 tape.

The SCR-55's Automatic Level Control (ALC) automatically adjusts
the recording level. The VOLUME and E-BASS controls have no
        effect on recording.

Before recording or dubbing, be sure the erase-protection tabs are
in place on the cassette tape you are recording onto.

Before recording or dubbing, make sure one or both cassettes are
past the empty portion at the beginning of the tape. To do this,
turn cassette hub with your finger or a pencil before loading the
        cassette.

To temporarily stop recording, press PAUSE.

Recording automatically stops when the tape reaches its end. To
record on the other side, turn over the tape.

RECORDING FROM THE RADIO

Follow these steps to record radio broadcasts.

1. Follow Steps 1 through 5 in "Radio Operation."

2. Load a blank cassette tape or one you want to record over into Tape 2.

3. Press RECORD to begin recording. Both PLAY and RECORD lock down.

4. Press STOP/EJECT on Tape 2 to stop recording.

The tape automatically stops when it reaches the end.

Recording AM Broadcasts

Sometimes taped AM broadcasts produce a whistling sound that you can hear
while recording or playing the tape. To reduce or eliminate this sound,
set BEAT CUT on the back of the stereo to the position that gives you the
best quality recording.

MAKING LIVE RECORDINGS

Follow these steps to use the built-in microphone to make live recordings.

1. Set FUNCTION to TAPE.

2. Load a blank cassette tape or one you want to record over into Tape 2.

3. Place the SCR-55 2 or 3 feet from the recording source.

4. Press RECORD to begin recording. Both PLAY and RECORD lock down.

5. Press STOP/EJECT on Tape 2 to stop recording.

The deck automatically stops when the tape reaches the end.

DUBBING (COPYING) A CASSETTE TAPE

Note: Each deck automatically stops when the tape reaches the end. We
recommend you dub to a tape that is the same length as the original
so the two decks stop at the same time.

Follow these steps to dub one side of a cassette tape. To copy the
tape's other side, over both tapes and repeat the steps.

1. Set FUNCTION to TAPE.

2. Set DUBBING to the desired dubbing speed.

High records at twice the normal speed.

3. Load the tape you want to dub into Tape 1.

4. Load a blank cassette tape or one you want to record over into Tape 2.

5. Press PAUSE on Tape 2.

6. Press RECORD on Tape 2. RECORD and PLAY lock down.

7. Press PLAY on Tape 1 to begin copying. PAUSE releases on Tape 2.

Note: You can listen to the tape playing in Tape 1 as you copy it.
The volume setting does not affect the recording level.

8. Each deck automatically stops when the tape it is playing reaches
    the end.

To stop copying before the tape ends, press STOP/EJECT on Tape 2. The
tape in Tape 1 continues playing. Press STOP/EJECT on Tape 1 to stop
    the tape.

USING HEADPHONES

To connect a pair of headphones, plug the headphone's 1/8-inch plug into
the PHONES jack. Your local Radio Shack store sells a wide selection of
stereo headphones.

LISTENING SAFELY

Follow these guidelines to protect your hearing when you use headphones.

Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After
you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable listening level.

Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high volume
listening can lead to permanent hearing loss.

Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt
to the volume levels, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort
might still damage your hearing.

TRAFFIC SAFETY

Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a
bicycle. This can cause a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas.

Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear outside sounds
when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic
hazard.
