SYSTEM 710 (130-1253) Equalizer Faxback Doc. # 6639

The frequency equalizer contains five preset sound curves that you can
select at any time and use with all audio sources. You can also create
and store another five-sound character curve of your own design, or you
can deactivate the equalizer.

SELECTING A PRESET SOUND CHARACTER CURVE

You can select any of the five preset sound character curves: Rock, POP,
JAZZ, SOFT, and ALTO. Each setting distinctly changes the music's char-
acter or tone. Choose the curve that best suits the type of music you
listen to.

Press EQUALIZER MODE until one of the preset curve names-ROCK, POP, JAZZ,
SOFT, or ALTO-appears on the display, or press PRESET (PRESET DOWN/UP on
the remote control) until the desired curve name appears on the display.

MANUALLY SETTING THE SOUND CHARACTER CURVE

Follow these steps to manually set a sound character curve:

1. Press G.EQ. G. EQ flashes on the display and REC lights. The sound
    character curve appears.

2. Use TUNING/EQUALIZER </> to select the frequency range you want to
change. The use TUNING/EQUALIZER up arrow / down arrow to
increase/decrease the level of the selected frequency.

* Use 63 Hz to boost or cut the frequencies in the low bass range. Low
organ notes and bass drums fall within this range. You can also use
this control to compensate for poor bass response in recording or to
reduce rumble or other low-frequency noise.

* Use 160 Hz to adjust frequencies in the middle-bass range. Timpani and
some low-brass instruments fall within this range.

* Use 400 Hz to adjust the midrange frequencies. Vocals are within this
and the 1 kHz range, so you can move the vocal to up front or back into
   ensemble by adjusting this control.

* Use 1 kHz to adjust the range of frequencies where the ear is most
sensitive. The best setting can vary depending on the types of music
   you play.

* Use 2.5 kHz to adjust the range of frequencies that include upper-mid
range instruments. The clarinet and saxophone fall within this range.

* Use 6.3 kHz to adjust the upper-mid range frequencies. Cymbals,
flutes, and violins fall within this range.

* Use 16 kHz to adjust high-frequency sounds. This range contains very
little musical material. The setting will have a subtle effect: adding
a little more dimension to the sound or as a very high frequency noise
   filter.

4. Press SET MEMORY. MEMO lights and the sound character curve and one
of the preset channel indicators flash (P1-P5). Press RESET to select
    the channel you want.

5. Press SET MEMORY. The sound character curve is memorized into the
    preset channel.

6. Press G.EQ. G.EQ stops flashing, indicating that the System 710 is
no longer in the frequency equalizer mode.

RECALLING A SOUND CHARACTER CURVE

Press EQUALIZER MODE until any channel indicator (P-1, P-2, P-3, P-4, or
P-5) appears on the display, or press PRESET to select the preset channel
that holds the sound character curve you want.

CANCELING THE GRAPHIC EQUALIZER

Press EQUALIZER MODE until FLAT appears on the display. SOURCE lights on
the display to indicate that the frequency equalizer is deactivated.

SPECTRUM DISPLAY

When the frequency equalizer settings are not on the display, the
fluorescent display shows the dynamic ranges of the signal sound in
fourteen separate bands. The rightmost column displays the full range
level.

The scale on the left side is for the fourteen bands. The scale on the
right side is for full range output.
