(420-5078) Power Faxback Doc. # 51527
Powering The CD Player
You can power your CD player from any of these sources:
two AA alkaline batteries.
two special AA rechargeable nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries.
two rechargeable AA nickel-cadmium batteries.
standard AC power using an AC adapter.
vehicle battery power using a DC adapter.
Note: Connecting an AC or DC adapter to the CD-3740 when non-rechargeable
batteries are installed disconnects the batteries.
Using Batteries
You can power your CD player from battery power using:
Two AA alkaline batteries (such as RadioShack Cat. No. 23-552)
Two special AA rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (RSU No. 11672508,
available through your local RadioShack store).
You can charge these batteries while they are in the battery compartment
using an AC or DC adapter. (See "Using AC Power" or "Using Vehicle
Battery Power" below.)
Two standard AA rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (such as Cat. No.
23-125).
Your CD player does not charge standard AA rechargeable batteries inside
its battery compartment, but you can charge them with an external
battery charger (Cat. No. 23-133).
CAUTIONS: Always use fresh, or freshly charged batteries of the required
size and recommended type.
Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of batteries
(standard, alkaline, or rechargeable nickel-cadmium), or
rechargeable batteries of different capacities.
Follow these steps to install batteries.
1. Press down on the battery compartment cover and slide it away from the
CD player, then lift the cover.
CAUTION: The battery compartment cover is attached to the CD player.
Do not try to remove it.
2. Put two batteries in the compartment, as indicated by the polarity
symbols (+ and -) marked inside.
3. Close the battery compartment cover.
When (battery symbol) flashes on the display, the sound distorts, or the
volume weakens, replace or recharge the batteries.
CAUTIONS: If you do not plan to use the CD player with batteries for a
month or more, or if you plan to use only an AC or DC adapter,
remove the batteries. Batteries can leak chemicals that can
destroy electronic parts.
Dispose of old batteries promptly and properly. Do not burn or
bury them.
Recharging Nickel-Cadmium Batteries
If you connect an optional AC adapter or DC adapter to the CD player, you
can set the CD player to charge special nickel-cadmium batteries while
they are inside the battery compartment.
CAUTIONS: Use only an AC adapter or DC adapter that meets the
specifications in "Using AC Power" and "Using Vehicle Battery
Power", below, to recharge the batteries in the CD player.
Other adapters could damage your CD player or the batteries.
Do not use the CD player or open the CD compartment cover while
you are charging nickel-cadmium batteries.
Special nickel-cadmium batteries charge more efficiently if the
temperature is between 40 and 90 degrees F (4.5 and 32 degrees
C).
Follow these steps to charge special nickel-cadmium batteries in the CD
player.
1. Connect an AC adapter or DC adapter to your CD player (see "Using AC
Power" or "Using Vehicle Battery Power" below).
2. With special rechargeable batteries installed and the CD compartment
cover closed, press STOP/CLEAR. CHG flashes on the display.
3. Within 10 seconds, press PLAY/PAUSE >|| to start charging. CHG
scrolls on the display while charging.
It takes about 8 hours to charge new or fully discharged special
nickel-cadmium batteries.
4. When the batteries are fully charged, the CD player automatically
stops charging them and turns itself off. Disconnect the AC or DC
adapter from the AC outlet or cigarette lighter first, then disconnect
it from the CD player.
Note: Fully discharge the batteries occasionally by playing the CD player
until it no longer plays. Then fully recharge the batteries. This
helps maintain the batteries' full charging capacity.
IMPORTANT: This CD player is capable of using rechargeable nickel-cadmium
batteries. At the end of the batteries' useful life, they
must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local,
county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for
information on recycling or disposal programs in your area.
Some options that might be available are: municipal curb-side
collection, drop-off boxes at retailers such as your local
RadioShack store, recycling collection centers, and mail-back
programs.
Using AC Power
You can power the CD player from a standard AC outlet using an AC adapter,
such as Cat. No. 273-1664.
Note: Connecting an AC adapter to the CD player with non-rechargeable or
standard rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries installed disconnects the
batteries.
CAUTIONS: You must use an AC adapter that supplies 6 volts, and delivers
at least 500 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to
positive, and its barrel plug must correctly fit the CD
player's DC IN 6V jack. The recommended adapter meets these
specifications. Using an adapter that does not meet these
specifications could damage the CD player or the adapter.
When you finish using the AC adapter, disconnect it from the AC
outlet first, then unplug it from the CD player.
Follow these steps to connect an AC adapter to the CD player.
1. Insert the AC adapter's 4.0 mm outer diameter/1.7 mm inner diameter
barrel plug into the AC adapter cord, setting TIP to + (positive).
2. Set the AC adapter's voltage switch to 6V.
3. Insert the AC adapter's barrel plug into the CD player's DC IN 6V
jack.
4. Plug the other end of the adapter into a standard AC outlet.
Using Vehicle Battery Power
You can power your CD player from your vehicle's battery using a DC
adapter, such as Cat. No. 273-1801.
Note: Connecting a DC adapter to the CD player with non-rechargeable or
standard rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries installed disconnects the
batteries.
CAUTIONS: You must use a DC adapter that supplies 6 volts and delivers at
least 500 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to positive,
and its plug must correctly fit the CD player's DC IN 6V jack.
The recommended adapter meets these specifications. Using a DC
adapter that does not meet these specifications could damage
the CD player or the adapter.
Disconnect the adapter from the cigarette-lighter; socket when
you are not using it, to prevent the vehicle's battery from
being drained.
Always disconnect the adapter from the cigarette-lighter socket
before you unplug it from the CD player.
If you park your vehicle in the sun, temperatures inside can
easily reach levels that could damage your CD player and your
CDs. To prevent heat damage, avoid leaving your CD player or
CDs in your vehicle.
Follow these steps to connect a DC adapter to the CD player.
1. Attach the 4.0 mm outer diameter/1.7 mm inner diameter barrel plug to
the adapter cord, matching the + on the plug with TIP on the cord.
2. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 6V.
3. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the CD player's DC IN 6V jack.
4. Plug the other end of the adapter into your vehicle's cigarette
lighter socket.
Note: If the CD player does not operate when you use the DC adapter,
unplug the adapter from the cigarette-lighter socket and clean any
ashes or debris from the socket.
