SCR-58 Portable AM/FM Stereo Auto-Stop Single Cassette Recorder
(140-0725) Tape Hints Faxback Doc. # 39072
Erasing a Cassette Tape
To erase a cassette tape, simply record new audio or silence over the
recording. To record silence, follow these steps:
1. Set FUNCTION to TAPE.
2. Load the cassette tape you want to erase.
3. Press RECORD. The tape deck records silence over the previous recording.
NOTE: The built-in microphone will pick up back ground noise, so the
recorder needs to be in a quiet place to record silence.
4. Press STOP/EJECT to stop recording. Then press STOP/EJECT again to open
the cassette compartment door and remove the tape.
NOTE: For the fastest and most thorough tape erasure, use a bilk tape
eraser such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 44-233.
Preventing Accidental Erasure
To protect your valuable recordings, cassette tapes have an erase protection
tab for each side of the tape. To prevent further recordings onto your tape,
break off these tabs.
To avoid erasing or recording over Side A (or 1), use a screwdriver to break
off the Side A tab. To protect Side B (or 2), remove the Side B tab.
If you later decide you want to record on the tape again, place a piece of
plastic tape over the tab hole for the side on which you want to record.
CAUTION: Removing the erase-protection tabs does not protect the tape from
being erased by a bulk tape eraser.
Restoring Tape Tension
If you repeatedly play a cassette tape, the tape can become tightly wound on
one of the hubs. This can cause high-pitched squeaks during playback, or it
can stretch the tape. To restore the correct tension, fast-forward the en-
tire tape, and then rewind it. If problems persist, repeat this procedure.
Do Not Demagnetize the Record/Play Heads
The SCR-58 uses a permanent magnet erasing system that ensures recording
clarity and high-frequency response. Unlike other erasing systems, the
permanent magnet erase head does not accumulate residual magnetism that
interferes with recording. Therefore, it is not necessary to demagnetize
the record/play heads.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to demagnetize the record/playback head or the
erase head. Doing so could damage the SCR-58.
Cleaning the Tape-Handling Parts
Dirt, dust or particles of the tape's coating can accumulate on the tape
heads and other parts the tape touches. This can greatly reduce the cassette
player's performance. Use the following cleaning procedure after every 20
hours of tape player operation. Your local Radio Shack store also sells
tape head cleaning kits (such as Cat. No. 44-1162).
1. Remove the batteries and disconnect any power source.
2. Open the cassette compartment door.
3. Press PLAY to expose the tape-handling parts.
4. Use a cotton swab dipped in denatured alcohol or tape head cleaning
solution to clean the record/playback head, pinch roller, capstan and
erase head.
5. When you finish cleaning, press STOP/EJECT and close the cassette
compartment door.
