CONNECTING POWER
You can power your CD player from:
Internal battery power (using two AA alkaline or rechargeable
nickel-cadmium batteries, not supplied)
Standard AC power (using an optional AC adapter, not supplied)
Vehicle battery power (using an optional DC adapter, not supplied)
Using Batteries
You can power your CD player from two AA batteries. For the best results,
we recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552/57.
Or, you can use high-capacity rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries
(see "Charging Nickel-Cadmium Batteries").
1. Slide off the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow.
2. Insert two AA batteries into the battery compartment over the ribbon,
according to the polarity symbols (+ and -) outside the compartment.
Notes:
Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type.
Never mix fresh and old, alkaline and nickel-cadmium batteries, or
nickel-cadmium batteries of different capacities.
3. Replace the cover.
Replace the batteries when the sound distorts or the volume weakens.
To remove the batteries, simply lift the ribbon.
Cautions:
Never leave dead, old, or weak batteries in the CD player.
Batteries can leak chemicals and corrode or damage electronic
circuits.
Always dispose of old batteries promptly and properly.
If you do not plan to power the CD player from batteries for a month
or more, remove and store the batteries.
Charging Nickel-Cadmium Batteries
You can use high-capacity rechargeable Nickel-Cadmium batteries, such as
Cat. No. RSUK11672508, and recharge them while they are in the battery
compartment using an optional AC or DC adapter. Or, you can use an
optional external battery charger (such as Cat. No. 23-133, not supplied)
Nickel-cadmium batteries come fully discharged. To recharge batteries
while they are in the battery compartment (see "Using AC Power" or "Using
Vehicle Battery Power"). The RECHARGE indicator lights while you charge
the batteries.
Warning:
Do not try to charge non-rechargeable batteries. They might get very
hot and possibly explode.
Charging Tips:
Fully discharge the batteries occasionally by playing the CD player
until it no longer plays. Then fully recharge the batteries. This
helps maintain the batteries' full charging capacity.
Avoid charging the batteries in a hot environment
(hotter than 113 degrees F). Doing so can permanently reduce
the batteries' charging capacity.
With the CD player turned off, it takes about 15 hours to charge
fully discharged nickel-cadmium batteries. You can use the CD player,
but charging takes longer.
Do not overcharge batteries. Overcharging can severely reduce the
batteries' useful life.
Always unplug the AC adapter from the AC outlet when the batteries are
fully charged.
Important:
This CD player is capable of using Nickel-Cadmium batteries. At the
end of the batteries' useful life, they must be recycled or disposed
of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste
management authorities for information on recycling or disposal
programs in your area. Some options that might be available are
municipal curb-side collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling
collection centers, and mail-back programs.
Using AC Power
You can use an optional AC adapter (such as Cat. No. 273-1664,
not supplied) to power your CD player, or to recharge nickel-cadmium
batteries in the battery compartment from standard AC power.
Cautions:
The recommended AC adapter supplies 4.5 volts and delivers at least
550 milliamps. Its center tip is set to positive, and its plug
correctly if its the CD player's DC 4.5V jack.
Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could damage
the CD player or the adapter.
If you are not recharging nickel-cadmium batteries, remove the
batteries.
1. Plug the 5.5 mm outer diameter/2.1 mm inner diameter barrel plug into
the AC adapter's cord so it reads TIP +.
2. Set the adapter's voltage selector to 4.5V.
3. Plug the large barrel plug into the CD player's DC 4.5V jack.
4. Plug the other end of the adapter into a standard AC outlet.
Using Vehicle Battery Power
You can use an optional DC adapter (such as Cat. No. 273-1801, not
supplied) to power your CD player, or to recharge nickel-cadmium batteries
in the battery compartment from your vehicle's battery power.
Cautions:
The recommended DC adapter supplies 4.5 volts and delivers at least
550 milliamps. Its plug correctly fits the CD player's DC 4.5V jack
and you can set its center tip to positive. Using an adapter that
does not meet these specifications could damage the CD player or the
adapter.
If you are not recharging Nickel-Cadmium batteries, remove the
batteries.
1. Plug the 5.5 mm outer diameter/2.1 mm inner diameter barrel plug into
the DC adapter's cord so it reads TIP +.
2. Set the DC adapter's voltage selector switch to 4.5V.
3. Plug the barrel plug into the CD player's DC 4.5V jack.
4. Plug the other end of the adapter into your vehicle's
cigarette-lighter socket.
CONNECTING TO A HOME AUDIO SYSTEM
You can listen to your CD-3530 by connecting it to your home audio system.
1. Connect the plug on the supplied Y-cable into your CD-3530's LINE OUT
jack.
Note:
This Y-cable accepts the CD-3530's single stereo output and separates
it into two (left and right) stereo channels.
2. Connect the phono plugs on the other end of the Y-cable into your home
audio system's corresponding left and right phono input jacks.
CONNECTING TO AN AUTOSOUND SYSTEM
You can listen to your CD-3530 by connecting it to your autosound system.
To make this connection, you need a CD player-to-cassette player adapter
(such as Cat. No. 12-1951, not supplied).
1. Insert a CD player-to-cassette player adapter into your autosound
system's cassette compartment.
Note:
This adapter accepts the CD-3530's stereo output and sends it to the
cassette player's playback head.
2. Connect the plug on the CD player-to-cassette player adapter into your
CD-3530's LINE OUT jack.
CONNECTING HEADPHONES OR SPEAKERS
You can listen to your CD-3530 by connecting headphones or amplified
speakers with a 1/8-inch plug to either the PHONES 1 or 2 jacks or the
LINE OUT jack.
Notes:
When you connect headphones or amplified speakers to the CD player's
PHONES 1 and 2 jacks, you can control the volume using the CD player's
VOLUME control.
When you connect headphones or amplified speakers to the CD player's
LINE OUT jack, you can control the volume using the volume control on
the amplified speakers, home audio system, or autosound system.
For the best sound, if the headphones or amplified speakers you
connect to the PHONES 1 and 2 jacks have a volume control, set their
volume control to maximum.
Your local Radio Shack store carries headphones and amplified
speakers.
Listening Safely
To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones.
Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening.
After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level.
Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume
listening can lead to permanent hearing loss.
Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears
adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause
discomfort might still damage your hearing.
Traffic Safety
Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a
bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas.
Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear some outside
sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a
traffic hazard.
