CD-3460/3470 Portable CD Player
(420-5052/5053) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 32197
You can power your CD player from:
Four AA alkaline or rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (not
supplied)
Standard AC power, using an AC adapter (not supplied)
Vehicle battery power, using a DC adapter (not supplied)
USING BATTERIES
You can power your CD player from four AA batteries. For the best results,
we recommend alkaline batteries such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552, or
rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries such as Cat. No. 23-125.
INSTALLING/REPLACING THE BATTERIES
1. Set CHG/OFF to OFF.
2. Slide off the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow.
3. If necessary, remove and discard the old batteries.
CAUTIONS: Always dispose of old batteries promptly and properly.
Never leave dead, old, or weak batteries in the CD player.
4. Place four AA batteries in the compartment as indicated by the polarity
symbols (+ or -) marked inside the compartment.
CAUTIONS: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type.
Never mix fresh and old batteries, or alkaline and nickel-
cadmium batteries.
If you do not plan to use the CD player for a month or more,
or you plan to use an optional AC or DC adapter, remove and
store the batteries. Batteries can leak chemicals that
corrode or damage electronic circuits.
Never heat, disassemble, or throw batteries into a fire.
5. Replace the battery compartment cover.
Replace or recharge the batteries when the LOW BATTERY indicator flashes on
the display, the sound distorts, or the volume weakens.
CHARGING NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERIES
Nickel-cadmium batteries come fully discharged. You can charge the battery
while it is in the battery compartment using an optional AC adapter (not
supplied), such as Cat. No. 273-1664. Or, you can use a DC adapter (not
supplied), such as Cat. No. 273-1801. You can also use an external battery
charger (not supplied), such as Cat. No. 23-239.
WARNING: Do not try to charge non-rechargeable batteries. Doing so causes
the batteries to become very hot and possibly explode.
Follow these steps to recharge nickel-cadmium batteries while they are in
the battery compartment.
NOTE: You can play a CD while recharging the batteries; however, this
causes the batteries to recharge more slowly.
1. Place four nickel-cadmium batteries in the compartment as indicated by
the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the compartment.
CAUTION: Never mix rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries.
2. Set CHG/OFF to CHG.
3. Set the adapter's tip polarity to positive (+), following the
instructions supplied with the adapter.
4. Insert the adapter's 4.0 mm plug into the CD player's DC 6V jack.
5. Plug the adapter's other end into a standard outlet.
6. When the batteries are fully charged, set CHG/OFF to OFF.
NOTE: It takes about 15 hours to charge fully discharged
nickel-cadmium batteries.
7. Unplug the AC adapter from the AC outlet, then disconnect the adapter
from the CD player.
CHARGING TIPS
Fully discharge the batteries occasionally by playing the CD player
until it no longer plays. Then fully recharge the batteries. This
helps maintain the batteries' full charging capacity.
Avoid charging the battery in a hot environment (more than 113 degrees
Fahrenheit) as it can permanently reduce the battery's charging
capacity.
IMPORTANT: This portable CD player can use rechargeable nickel-cadmium
batteries. At the end of their useful life, the batteries must
be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local
county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for
information on recycling or disposal programs in your area.
Some options that might be available are: municipal curb-side
collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection
centers, and a mail-back program.
USING AC POWER
You can power your CD player from standard AC power, using an AC adapter
such as Cat. No. 273-1664 (not supplied).
CAUTIONS: You must use an AC adapter that supplies regulated 6 volts and
delivers at least 450 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to
positive, and its plug must correctly fit the CD player's DC 6V
jack. The recommended adapter meets these specifications.
Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could
seriously damage the CD player or the adapter.
When you finish using the AC adapter, disconnect it from the AC
outlet first, then unplug it from the CD player.
Follow these steps to use an AC adapter.
1. Set CHG/OFF to OFF.
WARNING: If you install alkaline batteries in the CD player, do not
set CHG/OFF to CHG. Doing so causes the alkaline batteries
to become very hot and possibly explode.
2. Set the adapter's tip polarity to positive (+), following the
instructions supplied with the adapter.
3. Insert the adapter's 4.0 mm plug into the CD player's DC 6V jack.
4. Plug the other end of the adapter into a standard AC outlet.
USING VEHICLE BATTER POWER
You can power your CD player from your vehicle's battery, using an optional
DC adapter such as Cat. No. 273-1801.
CAUTIONS: This CD player is designed for use with vehicles that have a 12-
volt, negative-ground electrical system. Most vehicles have
this type of electrical system. If you are unsure about the
type your vehicle has, contact the vehicle dealer. Using the CD
player with a different electrical system could damage the CD
player or the vehicle's electrical system.
You must use a DC adapter that supplies regulated 6 volts and
deliver at least 450 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to
positive, and its plug must correctly fit the CD player's DC 6V
jack. The recommended adapter meets these specifications.
Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could
seriously damage the CD player or the adapter.
Do not leave the adapter connected to the cigarette-lighter
socket or to the CD player when the player is not in use.
To protect your vehicle's electrical system, always disconnect
the adapter from the cigarette-lighter socket or to the CD
player when the player is not in use.
If you park your vehicle in the sun, temperatures inside can
easily reach levels that could damage your CD player and your
CDs. To prevent heat damage, do not expose your CD player or
CDs to temperature extremes.
Follow these steps to use your vehicle's battery power.
1. Set CHG/OFF to OFF.
WARNING: If you installed alkaline batteries in the CD player, do not
set CHG/OFF to CHG. Doing so causes the alkaline batteries
to become very hot and possibly explode.
2. Attach the 4.0 mm plug to the adapter cord, matching TIP on the cord
with positive (+) on the plug.
3. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 6V.
4. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the CD player's DC 6V jack.
5. Plug the other end of the adapter into your vehicle's cigarette-lighter
socket. The red indicator on the adapter's case lights.
