STS 55 5-Inch Two-Way Bookshelf Speaker
(400-2090) Connections Faxback Doc. # 19939
The Optimus STS 55 5-Inch Two-Way Bookshelf Speaker is a two-way acoustic
suspension speaker that uses a 5-inch high-polymer laminate woofer to yield
excellent low-end response and tight, clean bass. A 1/2-inch polyamide
dome tweeter provides clear and natural high-frequency sound reproduction.
The speaker cabinet is solid in construction and finished in genuine
woodgrain vinyl.
The decorative grille is acoustically transparent.
NOTE: You need speaker wire (not supplied) to connect your speaker.
Please read this entire manual before you connect your speaker.
SPEAKER PLACEMENT
CAUTIONS: To prevent the cabinet from warping or discoloring, do not place
the speaker where it is exposed to direct sunlight or excessive
humidity.
Do not place the speaker where it might be knocked over or hit
by falling objects.
Where and how you position your speaker has a great effect on the over-all
sound of your system.
For the best stereo effect, position each speaker an equal distance from
the center of your listening area.
If you must place speakers farther apart than recommended, you can turn
them slightly toward each other to achieve a more realistic effect.
For a slight increase in bass response, place your speaker on a shelf or
table positioned against a wall or in a corner.
Avoid placing your speaker on a surface that absorbs sound, such as thick
carpeting.
Experiment to find the best setup for your sound system.
CONNECTING TO AN AMPLIFIER
CAUTIONS: You can use an amplifier/receiver with a power handling rating
higher than that of the speaker, but take care never to exceed
the speaker's maximum power rating (see "Specifications" Faxback
Doc. # 19940).
To avoid any damage to the speaker or amplifier/receiver, turn
off the amplifier/receiver, turn off the amplifier/receiver
before making connections.
Your local Radio Shack store has a wide selection of speaker wire. We
recommend you use color-coded or marked wire to help you correctly connect
the wire. Some color-coded wires have a stripe running down one side of
the conductors. Some marked wires have ridges along one side of the
conductors.
With a pair of speaker in their approximate locations, measure the distance
from each speaker to the amplifier. Use 18-gauge speaker wire or lamp cord
for distances up to 50 feet. For greater distances, use 16-gauge wire.
1. Split apart about 4 inches of speaker wire on each end.
2. Use a wire stripper to strip 1/4 inch of insulation from each wire
end. Twist the loose wire strands to prevent the wires from shorting.
3. Press the right speaker's negative (-) terminal tab and insert one of
the bare wire ends into the opening. Then release the tab.
4. Press the right speaker's positive (+) terminal tab and insert the
other bare wire end into the opening. Then release the tab.
5. Insert the other end of the wire you inserted into the right speaker's
negative (-) terminal into your amplifier/receiver's right negative
(-) speaker terminal.
NOTE: For the maximum bass response and the best performance, be sure
your speaker wires are properly connected according to their
polarity (+ to + and - to -).
6. Connect the remaining wire to the amplifier/receiver's right positive
(+) speaker terminal.
7. Repeat this process to connect another speaker to your amplifier/-
receiver's left speaker terminals.
