CHOOSING A POWER SOURCE

You can power your CD player from:

Two AA alkaline or one special-order rechargeable nickel-cadmium
    battery (not supplied)

Standard AC power, using an AC adapter (not supplied)

Vehicle battery power, using a DC adapter (not supplied)

USING BATTERIES

You can power your CD player from two AA batteries. For the best results,
we recommend alkaline batteries such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552 or the
special-order rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery (Cat. No. CMC 23-1006,
available by special order from your local Radio Shack store). The CD
player can recharge the special-order nickel-cadmium battery while it is
installed.

Installing/Replacing the Batteries

1. Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow,
then swing the battery compartment cover open.

2. To remove the old batteries, press the negative side of the battery so
the batteries pop out of the compartment.

CAUTIONS: Always dispose of old batteries promptly and properly.

Never heat, disassemble, or throw batteries into a fire.

Never leave dead, old, or weak batteries in the CD player.
They can leak chemicals that corrode or damage electronic
               circuits.

3. Place two AA batteries (or the special-order nickel-cadmium battery
stick) in the compartment as indicated by the polarity symbols
(+ and -) marked inside the compartment.

CAUTIONS: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type

Never mix fresh and old batteries, or alkaline and nickel-
               cadmium batteries.

If you do not plan to use the CD player for a month or more,
or you plan to use an AC or DC adapter, remove and store the
               batteries.

4. Close the battery compartment cover.

When the batteries become weak, BATTERY IMAGE flashes, then the CD player
automatically turns off. Replace alkaline batteries (or recharge the
nickel-cadmium battery) when this happens.

Charging the Nickel-Cadmium Battery

Nickel-cadmium batteries come fully discharged. You can charge the special
order nickel-cadmium battery while it is in the battery compartment using
the recommended adapters (AC adapter Cat. No. 273-1664, DC adapter Cat. No.
270-1567).

Follow these steps to recharge the special-order nickel-cadmium battery in
the battery compartment.

1. Attach the proper-sized barrel plug to the adapter cord, matching
positive (+) on the plug with TIP on the cord.

2. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 6V.

3. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the CD player's DC 6V jack.

4. Plug the adapter's other end into a standard AC outlet.

5. When the nickel-cadmium battery is fully charged, unplug the AC adapter
from the AC outlet, then disconnect the adapter from the CD player.

NOTE: It takes about 12 hours to charge a fully discharged nickel-cadmium
       battery.

Charging Tips

You can play the CD player while you charge the battery, but this
prolongs the time required for a full charge.

Always keep the charging terminal clean.

Under normal usage conditions, the nickel-cadmium battery can be
    recharged about 500 times.

Fully discharge the battery occasionally by playing the CD player until
it no longer plays. Then fully recharge the battery. This helps
restore the battery's full charging capacity.

Avoid charging the battery in a hot environment (more than 113 degrees
    F) as it can permanently reduce the battery's charging capacity.

Do not overcharge the battery. Overcharging can severely reduce a
    battery's useful life.

    Do not short-circuit the battery's terminals (+ and -).

Do not put nickel-cadmium batteries in water or fire.

    Do not disassemble nickel-cadmium batteries.

IMPORTANT: This portable CD player can use a rechargeable nickel-cadmium
battery. At the end of its useful life, it must be recycled or
disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state
hazardous waste management authorities for information on
recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that
might be available are: municipal curb-side collection drop off
boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and a mail-
            back program.

USING AC POWER

You can power your CD player from standard AC power using a 6-volt AC
adapter, such as Cat. No. 273-1664.

CAUTION: You must use an AC adapter that supplies regulated 6 volts and
delivers at least 500 miliamps. Its center tip must be set to
positive, and its plug must correctly fit the CD player's DC 6V
jack. The recommended adapter meets these specifications. Using
an adapter that does not meet these specifications can seriously
damage the CD player or the adapter.

Follow these steps to use an AC adapter.

1. Attach the proper-sized barrel plug to the adapter cord, matching
positive (+) on the plug with TIP on the cord.

2. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 6V.

3. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the CD player's DC 6V jack.

NOTE: Battery power disconnects when you connect an AC adapter to the CD
player (unless you are using the special order nickel-cadmium
       battery).

4. Plug the other end of the adapter into a standard AC outlet.

USING VEHICLE BATTERY POWER

You can power your CD player from your vehicle's battery, using an optional
DC adapter, such as Cat. No. 270-1567.

CAUTIONS: This CD player is designed for use with vehicles that have a 12-
Volts negative-ground electrical system. Most vehicles have this
type of electrical system. If you are unsure about the type your
vehicle has, contact the vehicle dealer. Using the CD player
with a different electrical system could damage the CD player or
           the vehicle's electrical system.

You must use a DC adapter that supplies regulated 6 volts and
delivers at least 500 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to
positive, and its plug must correctly fit the CD player's DC 6V
jack. The recommended adapter meets these specifications. Using
an adapter that does not meet these specifications can seriously
damage the CD player or the adapter.

Do not leave the adapter connected to the cigarette-lighter
socket or to the CD player when the player is not in use.

Always disconnect the adapter from the cigarette-lighter socket
first, then from the CD player. Otherwise, a short circuit could
occur and damage the adapter or the vehicle's electrical system.

If you park your vehicle in the sun, temperatures inside can
easily reach levels that could damage your CD player and your
CDs. To prevent heat damage, avoid leaving your CD player or CDs
           in your vehicle.

Follow these steps to use your vehicle's battery power.

1. Attach the proper-sized barrel plug to the adapter cord, matching
positive (+) on the plug with TIP on the cord.

2. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 6V.

3. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the CD player's DC 6V jack.

NOTE: Battery power disconnects when you connect a DC adapter to the
CD player (unless you are using the special-order nickel-cadmium
           battery).

4. Plug the other end of the adapter into your vehicle's cigarette-lighter
socket. The red indicator on the adapter's case lights.
