CD-3480 Portable Compact Disc Player
(420-5054) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 18307
CHOOSING A POWER SOURCE
You can power your CD player from:
Two AA alkaline or one special-order rechargeable nickel-cadmium
battery (not supplied)
Standard AC power, using an AC adapter (not supplied)
Vehicle battery power, using a DC adapter (not supplied)
USING BATTERIES
You can power your CD player from two AA batteries. For the best results,
we recommend alkaline batteries such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552 or
the special-order rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery (Cat. No. CMC
23-1006, available by special order from your local Radio Shack store).
The CD player can recharge the special-order nickel-cadmium battery while
it is installed.
Installing/Replacing the Batteries
1. Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow,
then swing the battery compartment cover open.
2. To remove the old batteries, press the negative side of the battery
as shown so the batteries pop out of the compartment.
CAUTIONS: Always dispose of old batteries promptly and properly.
Never heat, disassemble, or throw batteries into a fire.
Never leave dead, old or weak batteries in the CD player.
They can leak chemicals that corrode or damage electronic
circuits.
3. Place two AA batteries (or the special-order nickel-cadmium battery
stick) in the compartment as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and
-) marked inside the compartment.
CAUTIONS: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type.
Never mix fresh and old batteries, or alkaline and nickel-
cadmium batteries.
If you do not plan to use the CD player for a month or more,
or you plan to use an AC or DC adapter, remove and store
the batteries.
4. Replace the battery compartment cover.
When the battery becomes weak, a battery icon flashes, then the CD player
automatically turns off. Replace alkaline batteries (or recharge the
nickel-cadmium battery) when this happens.
Charging the Nickel-Cadmium Battery
Nickel-cadmium batteries come fully discharged. You can charge the
special-order battery while it is in the battery compartment using an
AC adapter (such as Cat. No. 273-1664, not supplied) or DC adapter (Cat.
No. 270-1567, not supplied).
Follow these steps to recharge the special-order nickel-cadmium battery
in the battery compartment.
1. Attach the proper-sized barrel plug to the adapter cord, matching
positive (+) on the plug with TIP on the cord.
2. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 6V.
3. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the CD player's DC 6V jack.
4. Plug the adapter's other end into a standard AC outlet.
5. When the nickel-cadmium battery fully charges, unplug the AC adapter
from the AC outlet, then disconnect the adapter from the CD player.
NOTE: It takes about 12 hours to charge a fully discharged nickel-cadmium
battery.
Charging Tips
You can play the CD player while you charge the battery, but this
increases the time required for a full charge. When you press >|| (PLAY/
PAUSE) during charging, C appears on the display.
Always keep the charging terminal clean.
Under normal usage conditions, the nickel-cadmium battery can be
recharged about 500 times.
Fully discharge the battery occasionally by playing the CD player until
it no longer plays. Then fully recharge the battery. This helps
restore the battery's full charging capacity.
Avoid charging the battery in a hot environment (more than 113
degreesF) as it can permanently reduce the battery's charging capacity.
Do not overcharge the battery. Overcharging can severely reduce a
battery's useful life.
Do not short-circuit the battery's terminal (+ and -).
Do not put nickel-cadmium batteries in water or fire.
Do not disassemble nickel-cadmium batteries.
IMPORTANT: This portable CD player can use a rechargeable nickel-cadmium
battery. At the end of its useful life, it must be recycled
or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state
hazardous waste management authorities for information on
recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options
that might be available are: municipal curb-side collection,
drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers,
and a mail-back program.
USING AC POWER
You can power your CD player from standard AC power using a 6-volt AC
adapter, such as Cat. No. 273-1664.
CAUTION: You must use an AC adapter that supplies regulated 6 volts and
delivers at least 500 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to
positive, and its plug must correctly fit the CD player's DC 6V
jack. The recommended adapter meets these specifications. Using
an adapter that does not meet these specifications could
seriously damage the CD player or the adapter.
Follow these steps to use an AC adapter.
1. Attach the proper-sized barrel plug to the adapter cord, matching
positive (+) on the plug with TIP on the cord.
2. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 6V.
3. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the CD player's DC 6V jack.
NOTE: Battery power disconnects when you connect an AC adapter to the
CD player (unless you are using the special-order nickel-cadmium
battery).
4. Plug the other end of the adapter into a standard AC outlet.
USING VEHICLE BATTERY POWER
You can power your CD player from your vehicle's battery, using an
optional DC adapter, such as Cat. No. 270-1567.
CAUTIONS: This CD player is designed for use with vehicles that have a
12-volt, negative-ground electrical system. Most vehicles
have this type of electrical system. If you are unsure about
the type your vehicle has, contact the vehicle dealer. Using
the CD player with a different electrical system could damage
the CD player or the vehicle's electrical system.
You must use a DC adapter that supplies regulated 6 volts and
delivers at least 500 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to
positive, and its plug must correctly fit the CD player's DC
6V jack. The recommended adapter meets these specifications.
Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications can
seriously damage the CD player or the adapter.
Do not leave the adapter connected to the cigarette-lighter
socket or to the CD player when the player is not in use.
Always disconnect the adapter from the cigarette-lighter socket
first, then from the CD player. Otherwise, a short circuit
could occur that could damage the adapter or the vehicle's
electrical system.
If you park your vehicle in the sun, temperatures inside can
easily reach levels that could damage your CD player and your
CDs. To prevent heat damage, avoid leaving your CD player or
CDs in your vehicle.
Follow these steps to use your vehicle's battery power.
1. Attach the proper-sized barrel plug to the adapter cord, matching
positive (+) on the plug with TIP on the cord.
2. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 6V.
3. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the CD player's DC 6V jack.
NOTE: Battery power disconnects when you connect a DC adapter to the
CD player (unless you are using the special-order nickel-cadmium
battery).
4. Plug the other end of the adapter into your vehicle's cigarette-lighter
socket. The red indicator on the adapter's case lights.
CONNECTIONS
You can listen to your CD-3480 by connecting stereo earphones or amplified
speakers to the player's PHONES jack, or by connecting the player's LINE
OUT jack to a home audio or car stereo system.
NOTES: The CD player's PHONES jack is a high-level audio output. If you
use this jack, use the CD player's VOLUME control and the volume
control of the amplified speakers to adjust the volume.
The CD player's LINE OUT jack is a low-level audio output. If
you use this jack, use the volume control of the home audio
system or car stereo system to adjust the volume.
Your local Radio Shack store carries a variety of earphones,
amplified speakers, cassette adapters, cable adapters, and
audio patch cables that you might need.
CONNECTING EARPHONES
For private listening, plug a pair of stereo earphones with a 1/8-inch plug
(not supplied) into the CD player's PHONES jack.
Listening Safely
To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use earphones.
Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After
you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level.
Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume
listening can lead to permanent hearing loss.
Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears
adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause
discomfort might still damage your hearing.
Traffic Safety
Do not wear earphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle.
This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas.
Even though some earphones are designed to let you hear some outside
sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a
traffic hazard.
CONNECTING AMPLIFIED SPEAKERS
To listen to your CD player through a pair of amplified speakers (not
supplied), plug the amplified speakers' cable into the CD player's PHONES
jack.
CONNECTING TO A HOME AUDIO SYSTEM
To listen to your CD player through your home audio system's amplifier/
receiver and full-size speakers, connect the supplied Y-cable's 1/8-inch
plug to the CD player's LINE OUT jack. Then connect the Y-cable's phono
plugs to the CD, AUX, or TV audio LEFT and RIGHT input jacks on your
amplifier/receiver. (If the jacks on your equipment do not match the
plugs on the cable, check with your local Radio Shack store for the
proper cable adapter.)
CONNECTING TO A CAR STEREO SYSTEM
You can connect your CD player to your car's stereo in one of three ways.
If your car stereo has LINE IN jacks - plug the supplied Y-cable's
1/8-inch plug into the CD
player's LINE OUT jack. Then
plug the Y- cable's phono plugs
into your car stereo's LINE IN
input jacks. (If the jacks on
your equipment do not match the
plugs on the Y-cable, check with
your local Radio Shack store for
the proper cable adapter.)
If your car stereo has a CD input jack - you need a stereo 1/8-inch patch
cable, such as Cat. No. 42-2387.
Plug one end into the CD player's
LINE OUT jack and the other end
into the car stereo's CD input
jack.
If your car stereo has a cassette - you need a CD-to-cassette
player adapter, such as Cat. No.
12-1951. Insert the adapter into
your car's cassette player just
as you would insert a regular
cassette. Then plug the CD-
to-cassette adapter's cord into
the CD player's PHONES or LINE
OUT jack.
You can mount your CD player in your vehicle using a CD mounting bracket.
Your local Radio Shack store has a complete line of automotive mounting
kits.
